(born Santiago Chile 1911; died 2002) Chilean painter, sculptor. Born in Santiago, Chile, Roberto Matta was at first interested in architecture, studying the discipline at Catholic University in Santiago and later working as a draftsman in Paris for the famed French architect Le Corbusier from 1934-7. Despite being born and raised in Chile, Matta gained most of his artistic influence at the beginning of his career while abroad in France and Spain. On a visit to Spain, Matta met Salvador Dali and Andre Breton. Breton invited Matta to join the Surrealist Movement in 1937. Influenced by both fellow surrealists and the work of Marcel Duchamp, Matta created his first colored drawings that year and his first oil paintings the next. During the late 1930s he created paintings, among them a series later known as “Psychological Morphologies”, that typical of the Surrealist Movement, explored the inner psyche and also focused on themes of transition and metamorphosis. In 1939 Matta left Europe for New York, as part of a tide of European artists that came to the US on the eve of World War II and as a result influenced young American artists, including the Abstract Expressionists. Matta befriended such American artists as Robert Motherwell and Jackson Pollock, and had his first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1940. Disturbed by the current global events, Matta started to break away from the Surrealist Movement, as part of a desire to shift from looking internally to externally; severing ties with the Surrealists in 1948. His paintings focused on the human condition and its relationship with the ever advancing industrial world, becoming more structured and less abstract in the process. He returned to Europe in the 1950s; traveled extensively in the 1960s and 1970s and explored new mediums such as ceramics and tapestry. His work has been shown throughout the world, including MOMA, Pompidou, and the Nationalgalerie. In 1999 he had a retrospective in Barcelona and Madrid.

With a Certificate of Authenticity from Digitarchives signed by the artist's son, Ramuntcho Matta. With a Galerie Thomas R. Monahan, Chicago, Illinois, label adhered along the verso. Lot Essay: Roberto Matta was born in Santiago, Chile, on November 11, 1911. He studied architecture at the Colegio del Sagrado Corazon and the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile before moving to Paris in 1933, where he worked as a draftsman in Le Corbusier's studio until 1937 and trained briefly with Walter Gropius in London. While visiting family in Spain and Portugal, he met poets Federico Garcia Lorca, Gabriela Mistral, and Pablo Neruda; through Garcia Lorca he was introduced to Surrealism and to Salvador Dali, who in turn connected him with Andre Breton. After showing Breton his fantastical architectural drawings, Matta joined the Surrealist group in 1937 and took part in the Pavilion of the Spanish Republic at the 1937 Paris exhibition alongside Picasso and Miro. In 1938 Matta participated in the International Exhibition of Surrealism, where he met Marcel Duchamp. That same year, experimenting alongside Yves Tanguy and Gordon Onslow-Ford, he produced his first paintings; bright, biomorphic works he called "inscapes" or "psychological morphologies," blending architectural space with organic, vital forms that unsettled conventional visual expectations. Due to WWII, Matta emigrated to the United States in 1939, where, as one of the youngest and most multilingual Surrealist expatriates, he quickly integrated into New York's emerging art scene. There he formed close relationships with William Baziotes, Arshile Gorky, Robert Motherwell, and Jackson Pollock, introducing them to gestural automatism and playing a formative role in the rise of Abstract Expressionism. By the mid-1940s, troubled by the devastation of World War II, he shifted toward what he called "social morphologies," paintings and drawings confronting the era's societal crises through increasingly anthropomorphic, rather than purely abstract, imagery; a shift that also coincided with his gradual withdrawal from the American art scene. Matta's first solo exhibition took place in 1940 at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York, and he went on to show at the Pierre Matisse Gallery and Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century. In 1948 he returned to Paris, only to find himself expelled from the Surrealist group; his focus shifted from personal, inner symbolism toward universal social experience expressed through recognizable forms. He lived in Rome from 1950 to 1954 before settling again in Paris, becoming a French citizen in 1969, and later dividing his time among London, Milan, Paris, and Italy. In the 1960s and 1970s he grew politically engaged, supporting the Cuban revolution and the muralists aligned with Chilean president Salvador Allende. His work was honored with major retrospectives at MoMA (1957), the Centre Pompidou (1985), the Reina Sofia in Madrid (1999), and in 2006 the San Diego Museum of Art paired his paintings with those of his son, artist Gordon Matta-Clark. Roberto Matta passed away in Civitavecchia, Italy on November 23, 2002, eleven days after his 91st birthday.

    Watercolor on paper, measuring 31 x 24 cm. Provenance: former collection of Elías Regalado, inherited through the same family. He was a Chilean architect, painter, and poet, considered the last representative of Surrealism. In 1985, he received the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts; in 1990, the National Art Prize; in 1992, the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts; and in 1995, the Praemium Imperiale in the Painting category. From the 1960s onward, he lived regularly in the Italian town of Tarquinia, located north of Rome, making occasional trips back to his country. During the 1960s, he ventured into furniture design after meeting the Italian designer Dino Gavina, creating the "Malitte Lounge Furniture" chairs in 1966 for Gavina SpA, which was later acquired by the well-known firm Knoll. The Malitte chairs are now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. In 2001, he was granted Spanish citizenship "in recognition of his contribution to Ibero-American culture and art, and as a testament to the special affection for Spain he demonstrated throughout his long career." He died in Civitavecchia on November 23, 2002. Following his death, the President of Chile, Ricardo Lagos Escobar, decreed three days of national mourning.

Roberto Matta develops in his paintings a distinctive visual language: weightless, floating forms and bodies dissolve into organically merging, pastel-coloured clouds, traversed by tension-filled lines that function like electrical impulses. The result is surreal pictorial spaces that extend into infinite perspective. Shaped by European Surrealism and American Abstract Expressionism, Matta found decisive impulses after emigrating to the United States through exchanges with artists such as Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky. His understanding of painting as an immediate expression of inner states proved highly influential. During the 1950s and 1960s, geopolitical tensions – from the Cold War to conflicts in Latin America – left visible traces in his work. His earlier dreamlike, galactic visions condensed into increasingly dramatic scenarios, in which machine-like structures and fragmented forms collide within a markedly darker palette. From an art-historical perspective, Matta’s oeuvre can be read as a crossroads of key discourses. His pictorial spaces undermine classical categories such as perspective, figure and ground, or inside and outside, and instead appear as dynamic fields of perception, imagination and dream. In doing so, Matta not only anticipates developments in post-war modernism but also opens up perspectives that extend into contemporary artistic and theoretical debates. Kunsthistorisch lässt sich Mattas Werk als Schnittstelle zentraler Diskurse lesen. Seine Bildräume unterlaufen klassische Kategorien wie Perspektive, Figur und Grund oder Innen und Aussen und erscheinen stattdessen als dynamische Felder von Wahrnehmung, Imagination und Traum. Damit antizipiert Matta nicht nur Entwicklungen der Nachkriegsmoderne, sondern eröffnet auch Perspektiven, die bis in gegenwärtige künstlerische und theoretische Fragestellungen hineinreichen. So erweist sich sein Œuvre als fortwährende Kartografie des Unsichtbaren – vielleicht ein Versuch, jene Kräfte sichtbar zu machen, die das menschliche Denken, Fühlen und Handeln prägen.

Work of great lyricism and gestural energy, in which Roberto Matta displays a figure of hybrid character, between the human, the mythical and the dreamlike. The silhouette, constructed by means of rapid charcoal lines, pink glazes, luminous yellows and green accents, seems suspended in an undefined space, more mental than physical, typical of the artist's visionary universe. The title, "Aide", introduces a suggestive reading around the idea of help, accompaniment or protective presence. The figure, with a fluctuating anatomy and a barely hinted face, is integrated into a vibrant atmosphere where color acts as an enveloping energy. The combination of acrylic, pastel and fusain gives the work a special richness of textures, between transparency, nervous lines and pulverized matter. Roberto Matta was one of the great renovators of 20th century painting. Linked to André Breton's circle along with artists such as Duchamp and Tanguy, he actively participated in the development of the surrealist language and, during his stay in New York in the 1940s, he had a decisive influence on the development of abstract expressionism. Throughout his career he exhibited in leading institutions and galleries in Europe and the United States, and was the subject of important retrospectives. His work is part of the collections of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
