Herbert Matter, Pontresina. 1935.
Est: $4,000 - $6,000
Herbert Matter 1907-1984 Pontresina. 1935. Condition A-: minor tears, creases and abrasions at edges; small pin holes in corners; tipped to mount. Paper. Framed. This poster is part of the extraordinary series of Swiss photomontage travel posters that Matter designed from 1934-36. These works consist of close-up images that seem to spring at the public, against cleverly manipulated montage backgrounds. The series was a revolution in both the concept of the travel poster and the nature of photographic advertising images in general. One of Matter's most recognizable images, this is also one of the rarest, as we could only find three other copies at auction since 1995. Matter p. 103, Fotoplakate cover and p. 127, Sports d'Hiver p. 159, Modern Poster 180, The Poster 268, Avant Garde p. 174, MoMa 153.1968, Word & Image p. 75.

HERBERT MATTER* (Engelberg 1907 - 1984 Southampton)

HERBERT MATTER* (Engelberg 1907 - 1984 Southampton) James Johnson Sweeny, director of Guggenheim, around 1960 gelatin silver print 25,2 x 20,2 cm verso photographer's stamp SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 200 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 200 Herbert Robert Matter was a Swiss-born American photographer and graphic designer known for his pioneering use of photomontage in commercial art. Matter‘s innovative and experimental work helped shape the vocabulary of 20th-century graphic design. He worked with Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, Le Corbusier and Deberny & Peignot. He went to the United States in 1936 and was hired by legendary art director Alexey Brodovitch. Work for Harper‘s Bazaar, Vogue and other magazines followed. From 1946 to 1966 Matter was design consultant with Knoll Associates. He worked closely with Charles and Ray Eames. From 1952 to 1976 he was professor of photography at Yale University and from 1958 to 1968 he served as design consultant to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. As a photographer, Matter won acclaim for his purely visual approach. A master technician, he used every method available to achieve his vision of light, form and texture. Manipulation of the negative, retouching, cropping, enlarging and light drawing are some of the techniques he used to achieve the fresh form he sought in his still lifes, landscapes, nudes and portraits. Close friends of Matter and his wife Mercedes were the painters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, fellow Swiss photographer Robert Frank and Alberto Giacometti. Further artists and styles: Guggenheim, Robert Frank, Alberto Giacometti, Knoll, Charles Eames, Ray Eames, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

HERBERT MATTER (1907-1984). PKZ. 1928. 50x35½ inches, 127x90¼ cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich.
Est: $6,000 - $9,000
HERBERT MATTER (1907-1984) PKZ. 1928. 50x35½ inches, 127x90¼ cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich. Condition A-: minor repaired tears at top edge. Framed. Herbert Matter, although primarily recognized for his photomontage travel posters, had a very strong artistic background. From 1928 to 1932, as a student in Paris at the Academie Moderne, he was taught by Ozenfant and Ferdnand Leger, and he also worked with A.M. Cassandre. It was during these years that PKZ, who were always seeking out talented new designers to promote their company, commissioned him to design a poster. Matter here shows off his facility with design and cubism. The way the space is organized, the ways the colors are handled and the geometrical, angular, eye-catching image show "the full impact of [Matter's] encounter with Leger," both in composition and execution (Matter p. 25). In fact, "the gradation of those forms that are supposed to appear three-dimensional, is perfected by Matter in the poster in a way that is almost exactly like Leger" (ibid); the youthful artist has fully assimilated the lessons of his mentors. Crouse p. 148, Matter p. 37, Art Deco Graphics p. 85, Encyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 132, Weill / Art Deco p. 275, Muller-Brockmann 80, Made in Switzerland p. 108.
