Little Lehigh River by Walter Mattern

Ca. 1950 oil on board landscape of house and bridge, Lehigh River Allentown PA. Identified on reverse, by Walter Mattern (AM 1892-1946). Born in Jonestown, Pennsylvania, Walter Mattern grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania and served his country in the Army during World War I. After the war, he returned to Allentown to work for an engineering firm, but later moved to Bayonne, New Jersey, at which time he began studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts summer school at Chester Springs, and at the Grand Central School of Art in New York City. He returned to Allentown in the late 1920s, working as an engineer at various firms, and became a student at the Kline-Baum Art School, eventually becoming an instructor at the school. Beginning in the 1930s, he was an active member of the Lehigh Art Alliance and the Circulating Picture Club. He was a close friend of Walter Baum, and often painted with him.

Early 20th Century, Original, frame 23.5” x 27.5”, artwork 19.5” x 23.5”, oil on board by Allentown PA artist Walter Mattern still life arranged to make a teddy bear look at a modernist sculpture of a cat, in the background there are flowers and mirror, artist signed lower right. After some research, this artist mainly focused on seascapes and landscapes. This is the only signed still life that we can find, it is displayed in a distressed painted gold frame, appears to be in excellent condition, please see photos.

Trainyard Along the Lehigh River.

This lot consists of a landscape painting entitled "Trainyard Along the Lehigh River," by Walter Mattern. It is dated circa 1930, as noted by the didactic on the verso. From the colors used in this landscape, it appears that this was painted during the winter season with the cold grey coloring and bare trees. In the distance there is a red and blue colored train. Between the viewer and the train is the Lehigh river. The artists signature is present on the lower left of the painting. The painting is framed in a metallic colored, ornately carved wooden frame. Overall the piece is in good condition with normal wear present.Condition: (Very Good - Excellent).Dimensions: Framed: 20-3/8" x 21-7/8".
