Air France was formed in 1933 through a merger of several smaller international companies. These airlines had already built extensive networks across the world, and when combined under the Air France umbrella they created an unprecedented accessibility to global travel. Air France remains one of the most highly regarded international airlines, servicing 78 countries around the world. It served as France’s primary national flag carrier for seven decades prior to its 2003 merger with KLM. Posters have always been essential to Air France’s communications. It has assembled one of the greatest poster collections in the world, with over 1,500 designs created by some of the most celebrated illustrators of the 20th century. Air France posters are typically bold and visually striking, often using minimal text while portraying destinations as dream-like and air travel as the gateway to those dreams. Edmond Maurus (1903–1985) was a French graphic artist and illustrator known for his contributions to travel and commercial poster design during the mid-20th century. His work is characterized by a refined balance of modernist clarity and symbolic imagery, often incorporating strong geometric forms and simplified compositions to communicate powerful ideas with immediacy.
