  • Vintage Poster Design by Mauzan for Distil Orange
    Oct. 08, 2026

Vintage Poster Design by Mauzan for Distil Orange

    Est: $800 - $1,200

This poster uses an original design by Mauzan that was never printed during his lifetime. In the mid 1990's the design was printed under license from his estate. The image typifies the distinctive humorous style that so endeared Mauzan to his loyal followers. Achille Lucien Mauzan ( 1883 - 1952) was born on the French Riviera but moved to Italy in 1905. During his career as a poster printer and designer, Mauzan designed over 2,000 posters, using a style marked by humor and brilliant colors for advertisement and events and over 1,000 postcard images. He made several important posters for the Italian film industry in Turin, and then went to work at Ricordi music publishing from 1912 to 1917. Later, from 1919 to 1923 he works in the Magical press (Giovanni Magagnoli). In 1924 in Milan he establishes with Morzenti his own publishing house, the Mauzan-Morzenti Agency. In 1926 he travels to Argentina and sets up the “Affiches Mauzan” (Mauzan Posters) publishing house where many of his greatest works were created and where he worked until 1932. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster was printed on heavyweight paper and is in very good condition. There is a small repaired tear in the bottom right of the poster that has been professionally mended and touched up. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Achille Lucien Mauzan Credito Italiano 1917 55.25 h x 39.25 w in (140 x 100 cm) So powerful was Mauzan's first World War I poster for Credito Italiano loans (see following lot) that the Italian government "did not hesitate to publish the poster representing the head of the soldier in gigantic proportions in order to display it on the most prestigious squares and monuments in the country" (Mauzan, p. 88). To see this face plastered throughout the streets, squares, and even theaters must have been a powerful act of intimidation. And for Mauzan, these two posters established his position as a leading poster artist of his time. Achille Lucien Mauzan Credito Italiano 1917 39.375 h x 27.625 w in (100 x 70 cm) Mauzan's fierce and embattled soldier nearly reaches off the page to proclaim to us: "Do your duty! Take out the loan!" So powerful was this image that it is considered by many to be the image of World War I. "This [poster] was to take its place in the ranks of the world's army of exhortation—the pointing, beckoning, declaiming figures that called from everywhere to everyone for more of everything. No less compelling than his counterparts, the Italian version certainly appeared in greater numbers, and in a wider variety of shapes and sizes than the pointers and beckoners of any other country. He was hung in gigantic reproductions across the streets, posted in multiple sets on outsize hoardings, printed by the million as postcards, folders and leaflets, and reproduced in magazine and newspaper advertisements... It was an indignity that he survived: his accusing hand remained for decades, rankling in the general memory" (Rickards, p. 24). G. Achille Lucien Mauzan Bertozzi 1930 54.625 h x 39.5 w in (139 x 100 cm) In this fourth incarnation of his ever-popular design, Mauzan gives us three discerning judges deliberating over the quality of Bertozzi cheese, a mere whiff of which has brought them like bloodhounds to the freshly cut wheel. Achille Lucien Mauzan Untisal 1929 61.25 h x 41.25 w in (156 x 105 cm) For anyone who believes that PMS and menopause are health concerns that have only recently surfaced on the talk show circuit, we would like to present Exhibit A: Mauzan's poster for Untisal pain reliever. Though humorous in its overblown caricaturization of the topic, this brutal scene of domestic unrest could just as easily have been used to raise money to fund hormonal research. Roughly translated, the top text reads, "What you take to calm you down." For the battered hubby and his overwrought spouse's sake, we can only hope that claim is true. It's one of two known designs executed by Mauzan for Untisal, with the other dwelling less on fury and more on relief (see PAI-LXXXV, 345). Achille Lucien Mauzan Tres Cadenas 1929 50.25 h x 36.25 w in (128 x 92 cm) Even when taking things to a literal extreme, the sky was the limit as far as Mauzan was concerned. So to show that the Roveda clothiers had three outlets available for the public's shopping convenience, he hoists this happy, carrot-topped fashionisto into the contented heavens. The smirk on his face and endorsing point lead us to believe that he's quite obviously hooked on the Roveda style. There's a trio of red snapper off to the right who want a taste of the brew. There is spectacular color and detail in this joyfully comical hand-signed gouache and ink maquette. Achille Lucien Mauzan Per La Liberazione 1917 55.125 h x 37.75 w in (140 x 96 cm) "The poster included here shows a giant enemy hand stretching toward the River Piave. Mauzan's work is in the mainstream of Italian commercial art, but in this case he has drawn from the fantasies in book illustrations. Such strange images are relatively rare in war posters. The poster was issued by the Consorzio Bancario (Banking Consortium)" (Darracott, p. xx). And though he does mine the darker recesses of his imagination, Mauzan couldn't have chosen a more direct appeal to feed the coffers of a wartime economy for the sake of liberation than with this scabrous claw about to be chopped to bits by the embodiment of Italian military might. Achille Lucien Mauzan Impermeabili Moretti 1921 76.375 h x 52.5 w in (194 x 133 cm) Mauzan's Copertoni Impermeabili Moretti poster with an elephant is world-famous; here's another angle, on a smaller, cuter scale: a delighted scarecrow, bundled in a Moretti raincoat, shelters two conversational frogs. It's another sunny tale in the middle of a dark, down-pouring night. MAGA, Paris Literature: Mauzan, A182; Takashimaya, 204; PAI-LXXXII, 356 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

24). G. Achille Lucien Mauzan Fulmen 1950 62 h x 44.25 w in (157 x 112 cm) An object poster isn't precisely the type of design one expects from an artist for whom extreme imagination was held as a premium. And yet this commission from later in Mauzan's career shows that he was just as capable of calling attention to a product with the detailed realism of singular clarity as he was with any outlandish whim. And with the Bauhausian Fulmen factory looming solidly in the rosy background of profitable commerce, could there be any question that their batteries were "the most durable"? Editions F. Est: $2,000 - $2,600

Achille Lucien Mauzan Copertoni Impermeabili Moretti 1921 76.75 h x 52 w in (195 x 132 cm) Clearly, this grinning elephant launched this poster into infamy: the backward glance and the delightful gleam in his eye seem to remark, "This is clever. Remember." Sometimes, the most improbable image is the most remarkable, and Mauzan championed memorable mystery in this one: rather than featuring a well-attired person, the elephant receives the Moretti rain jacket treatment. And Mauzan ups the ante with his use of tart lemon yellow that brings joy to the otherwise dark and dour scene, proving that he is one of the masters of this art form. Achille Lucien Mauzan Affiches Mauzan : Maquette gouache, crayon and charcoal on paper 29.5 h x 20.75 w in (75 x 53 cm) From the kooky mind of Mauzan comes this hilarious image of a man dyeing his various beards in primary colors. He liked the image so much that he used it for at least two posters, but this is likely its first incarnation in the form of a gouache and crayon preparatory work. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.
