Gabriel von Max studierte an den Akademien in Prag, Wien und zusammen mit Hans Makart (mit dem er sich ein Atelier teilte) 1863-1869 an der Münchener Akademie bei Carl Theodor von Piloty. Mit seinem 1865 entstandenen Bild "Märtyrerin am Kreuz" hatte er seinen ersten großen Erfolg, mit Künstlerkollegen fuhr er 1867 zur Pariser Weltausstellung, wo es ausgestellt war. Max nahm danach eine führende Stellung unter den Münchener Künstlern ein, seine Bilder wurden geschätzt, auf bedeutenden Ausstellungen gezeigt und an wichtige Sammlungen verkauft, er erhielt zahlreiche Ehrungen und Preise. 1878-1883 lehrte er als Professor an der Münchener Akademie. Max, Gabriel von Prag 1840 - München 1915 22 x 28 cm "Verlobte" (Engaged Couple). Two little monkeys, embracing, gaze at themselves in a mirror. Oil/panel, signed top left, titled bottom right. Private collection, Stuttgart. His intense study of Charles Darwin’s theory of human origins led, among other things, to Gabriel von Max acquiring his first live monkey in 1869 - a macaque - which was soon followed by further animals. Eventually, he kept as many as 14 monkeys, which he housed in a garden shed on Schwanthaler Straße. Later, as the monkeys frequently could not tolerate the Munich climate and died despite careful care, he kept only a few animals, which he observed closely, examined scientifically after their death, and photographed. The monkeys were also integrated into family life as household companions, a fact documented by various photographs and sketches by the artist (see also the numerous illustrations in: Gabriel von Max. Malerstar, Darwinist, Spiritist. Exhibition catalogue, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, Oct. 2010 to Jan. 2011, Munich 2010) . The only known self-portrait, dating from 1910, accordingly shows the artist with a monkey in his arms (Reiss-Engelhorn-Museum, Mannheim). From the very beginning, religious and mystical themes were at the heart of his artistic work; the psychological interpretation of pictorial content characterised Max’s oeuvre throughout his life. His paintings depicting monkeys made the artist famous. The first documented monkey painting, ‘Schmerzvergessen’ (Forgetting Pain), was created in 1871, followed by numerous others. ‘Monkeys as Art Critics’, arguably his most famous work, was acquired for Munich’s Neue Pinakothek in 1889. By attributing human characteristics to the monkey and thus making it a mirror image of human behaviour, Gabriel von Max follows in a long tradition. In many of his paintings, he places monkeys in human poses and situations, making this clear through titles such as “Entsagung” (Renunciation), “Lied ohne Worte” (Song Without Words), “Schmerzvergessen” (Forgetting Pain) or “Botaniker” (Botanists). It is in this context that our “Engaged Couple” in an intimate embrace should also be viewed. Die intensive Beschäftigung mit Charles Darwins Lehre vom Ursprung des Menschen führte unter anderem dazu, dass Gabriel von Max 1869 den ersten lebenden Affen erwarb, einen Makako, dem bald weitere Tiere folgten. Schließlich hielt er sich bis zu 14 Affen, die er in einem Gartenhaus in der Schwanthaler Straße beherbergte. Später, da auch trotz sorgfältiger Pflege die Affen das Münchner Klima häufig nicht vertrugen und starben, umgab er sich nur noch mit wenigen Tieren, die er aufmerksam beobachtete, nach ihrem Tode wissenschaftlich untersuchte und photographierte. Die Affen wurden auch als Hausgenossen in das Familienleben integriert, was durch verschiedene Fotografien und auch Skizzen des Künstlers dokumentiert ist (vgl. hierzu die zahlreichen Abbildungen in: Gabriel von Max. Malerstar, Darwinist, Spiritist. Ausst.-Kat. Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, München Okt. 2010 bis Jan. 2011, München 2010). Das einzige bekannte Selbstporträt zeigt 1910 den Künstler dementsprechend mit einem Affen auf dem Arm (Reiss-Engelhorn-Museum, Mannheim). Im Mittelpunkt seines künstlerischen Schaffens standen von Beginn an religiös-mystische Themen, die Psychologisierung der Bildinhalte zeichnet das Schaffen Max lebenslang aus. Note: Von Max was a Prague-born Austrian painter, and professor of history painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He was also a collector of anthropological artifacts. From 1869 to about 1873, von Max kept a herd of monkeys in a garden house in Schwanthalerstraße in Munich, which he photographed and sketched. The animals were cared for by his mother and his sister Caroline, who lived with him in Munich. They did not tolerate the Munich climate well and died rather quickly. Later he used the material for large paintings in which he sometimes depicted the animals as people. Von Max often used photographs to guide painting and indeed the great number of monkey photographs in his archive testify to their use as direct translation into his paintings.

Max. Kränzchen, 84.5 x 107.5 cm. Provenance: From the estate of the former art dealer Johann Stoffels, founded in Trier in 1873, since then private property. Company founder Johann Stoffels (1844 - 1916) had frequent contacts in Munich. The painting was severely damaged during a bombing raid in 1944 and initially stood unnoticed in the attic for several decades. In May 2000, it was then extensively restored by a restorer, namely Mr Ekkehard Weber, who also worked for the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne, among others. One version of the "Wreath" can be found in the Bavarian State Painting Collections - Neue Pinakothek Munich with the inventory number 7781. Another version was part of the exhibition "Darwin. Art and the Search for Origins" at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt in 2009. The version offered here has identical dimensions. Remnants of a signature and inscription can also be recognised in the lower left corner. In addition to painting, Gabriel von Max was also a committed naturalist who was intensively involved in anthropology, zoology and ethnography. His impressive anthropological collection of 60,000 objects testifies to his tireless pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the world around him. Particularly noteworthy is his great love of monkeys, a small herd of which he kept in his Munich garden house. These animals were not only his pets, but also his inspiration. He devoted a great deal of time to raising and caring for his herd of monkeys, which served as models for his famous monkey paintings. The best-known version of the "Monkeys as Art Judges" (originally called "Kränzchen"), which was created in 1889, was purchased by the art dealer Neumann for the Neue Pinakothek in Munich in the year it was created and is one of Gabriel von Max's best-known paintings. Max. Kränzchen, 84.5 x 107.5 cm. Provenienz: Aus dem Nachlass der ehemaligen Kunsthandlung Johann Stoffels, gegründet 1873 in Trier, seither Privatbesitz. Firmengründer Johann Stoffels (1844 - 1916) hatte häufige Kontakte nach München. Das Bild wurde während eines Bombenangriffes im Jahre 1944 stark zerstört und stand zunächst einige Jahrzehnte unbeachtet auf dem Speicher. Im Mai 2000 wurde es dann von einem Restaurator, namentlich Herrn Ekkehard Weber, der unter anderem auch für das Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Köln arbeitete, aufwendig restauriert. Eine Fassung des "Kränzchens" befindet sich in den Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen - Neue Pinakothek München mit der Inventarnummer 7781. Eine weitere Fassung war Teil der Ausstellung „Darwin. Kunst und die Suche nach den Ursprüngen“ in der Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt 2009. Die hier angebotene Fassung weist identische Maße auf. Weiter sind Reste einer Signatur und Bezeichnung zu erkennen in der linken unteren Ecke. Gabriel von Max war neben der Malerei auch ein engagierter Naturforscher, der sich intensiv mit Anthropologie, Zoologie und Ethnografie beschäftigte. Seine beeindruckende anthropologische Sammlung von 60.000 Objekten zeugt von seinem unermüdlichen Streben nach Wissen und Verständnis der Welt um ihn herum. Besonders bemerkenswert ist seine große Liebe zu Affen, von denen er eine kleine Herde er in seinem Münchner Gartenhaus hielt. Neben einer Ölskizze (bezeichnet "eines der drei Müller-Töchter / Prag, um 1856") enthält die Sammlung vor allem Bleistift- und Federstudien, darunter zahlreiche Kompositions-, Kopf- und Figurenentwürfe. Erwähnt sei eine Vorstudie zu Mendelssohns "Lieder ohne Worte", datiert 1857, ein "Jeremias" bezeichnetes Blatt von 1855, "Die Braut von Korinth", Christus auf dem See Genezareth, Christus am Ölberg, eine Penelope mit den Freiern, ein Künstler im Atelier vor seiner Staffelei, eine Federzeichnung mit der Darstellung von Rosen, Baum-, Pflanzen- und Häuserstudien, eine 1852 datierte Mutter mit Kind-Zeichnung und das gleiche Sujet bezeichnet "Wien 1858", eine Frau auf einem Totenbett von 1863, sowie vier kleine Affenskizzen.
