    Georges Maxim (French, 1885-1940). "La Musique" spelter lamp sculpture, ca. 1900 to 1910. Fabricated by Mestais, Paris. Foundry mark stamped at bottom of sculpture. Plaque with artist's name and title on base. A barefoot muse caught mid-step, lyre pressed to her side, her upturned face still listening to whatever note she just released into the air above her: Georges Maxim's "La Musique" is the Art Nouveau program stated with characteristic conviction. The figure is cast in spelter and finished in polychrome cold paint, the drapery rendered in the deep, silken greens favored by the style's leading practitioners, the flesh tones warm and modeled with care.
