Artist Buck McCain was born in 1943, and he grew up on a ranch in Southern California. After a horse ride left him injured, he taught himself to paint. Most of his oil paintings were peaceful western scenes, depicting cowboys and Native Americans. Later in his career he became an avid, sought-after sculptor.
Sculptor Buck McCain created a bronze monument, commissioned by the City of Tucson, Arizona, in 1987, entitled Soldado de Cuera.
