Frank C. McCarthy Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1924 - d. 2002

Artist Frank McCarthy is known worldwide, inside and outside the art world. Born in 1924, he was an American realist painter and artist, and his work began by appearing on the cover of magazines and books, and eventually film posters. He produced classic posters for films such as Thunderball and Once Upon a Time in the West.

Artist Frank McCarthy's skills didn't stop there; after his career as a commercial illustrator, he began focusing on his western pieces, which were sprawling paintings that displayed the classic tropes of the Wild West. During his 50-year career, he was once colloquially known as the Dean of Western Action Painters, as his work is unmatched in its drama and emotion, with still paintings that convey the fine details of the wild yet beautiful nature of the American West. Frank McCarthy's prints and paintings are classically contemporary examples of Western Art. You can find collectible genre prints available for sale at Invaluable.

They labored and brawled through the 1950's and 60's, living the bohemian life in "The Bullpen," a hive of artists in Midtown Manhattan. They lived from assignment to assignment as Madison Avenue "Mad Men" dreamed up campaigns for everything from pulp novels to cigarettes, from brassieres to Buicks. McCarthy illustrated books and magazine stories and painted posters for Hollywood - James Bond films in particular. In 1974, McCarthy left the commercial art world and moved to Arizona, where he would paint distinctive action scenes that seemed to leap from the stories of the Old West. In The Signal, McCarthy riffs on a theme he would return to time and again throughout his career: the moment before a battle commences, when war parties coordinate an attack by signaling with a blanket or robe. In this painting, McCarthy adds a note of drama, making the signal a full buffalo hide, resplendently waving while the rest of warriors wait just behind the brow of the hill, out of sight. In the foreground and in the distance, McCarthy's trademark buttes, rocks, and dry grasses, in high key and detail, set the stage. - James D. Balestrieri

For your consideration is a Frank McCarthy Signed Limited Edition, "Crossing The Divide", #425/1500, 1981. Hand signed in pencil on bottom left corner, COA included. "By early fall, a summer of melting has lifted the mantle of a snow from the mountain peaks. Only patched remain - enough to feed a waterfall. But winter will surely return, and so a party of Blackfeet set out on a hunt. The Blackfeet were the scourge of mountain men until a smallpox epidemic reduced their numbers and they became one of the weaker Indian nations. Thus, they never took part in the wars against the white man in the late 1800s. Instead, survival itself became their war. Even now, as they begin the hunt, clouds hang low on the mountains - a sign of the cold, wet weather ahead." Frank McCarthy's (1924-2002) dynamic paintings frequently featured the people of the west with a special emphasis on the Plains Indians, mountain men and cavalry that comprised the lore and lure of the Old West. Appropriately entitled the “Dean of Western Action Painters,” Frank McCarthy’s art was unsurpassed for its motion, drama and absolute attention to accuracy and detail. Highly collected and frequently imitated, Frank McCarthy’s works were treasured throughout the world as classic examples of contemporary Western Art. Retrospective showings of Frank McCarthy’s paintings have been held at the Museum of the Southwest, Midland, Texas; the R.W. Norton Museum in Shreveport, La.; the Thomas Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Ok.; and in 1992, at the Cowboy Artist of America Museum (now known as National Center for American Western Art) in Kerrville, Texas. Frank McCarthy was invited to join the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America organization in 1975 and was an active member in the CAA group for 23 years. He was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1997. Three books of his paintings have been published-The Art of Frank C. McCarthy, Frank C. There are many great characters written on the pages of those early days - Indians, trappers, cowboys. And the Cavalryman's chapter is as big as any." Frank McCarthy (1924-2002) Viewing a Frank McCarthy painting of the Old West is like walking in on an Indian raid or riding with the cavalry in a column of twos. There's action, plenty of it! Born in 1924, McCarthy was drawn to the West since he was a boy. He loved N.C. Wyeth's illustrations in classics such as Robin Hood and Treasure Island. His formal education was acquired at Pratt Institute and the Art Student's League where he studied under eminent painters. A successful career in commercial art and illustration followed, including book covers for major publishers and advertising art for movie studios and large corporations. The lure of the West was strong, however, and in 1974 he settled in Arizona, where he blazed a trail of accomplishments. He is a much honored member of the Cowboy Artists of America; had retrospective shows at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, the Gilcrease Institute in Tulsa, the Leanin' Tree Museum in Colorado, the Frontier Army Museum at Fort Leavenworth, the Museum of the Southwest in Midland and the Norton Museum in Shreveport. Articles about his paintings have appeared in many national magazines, and two books of his art have sold-out and are currently out-of-print. He was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in the summer of 1997. He died in 2002 of lung cancer. He was 78.
