McCormick 68.50 x 40.16 in. 174 x 102 cm Provenance : Vente anonyme ; Londres, Bonhams, 11 septembre 2007, n°94 ; Acquis lors de cette vente par les actuels propriétaires Cet important tableau représente le portrait en pied d’un marin plongé dans la lecture d’une lettre, peut-être celle que lui a adressé sa compagne alors qu’il s’apprête à embarquer sur l’un des navires de guerre de la Royal Navy représenté en arrière-plan. Notre marin officie pour His Majesty’s Ship nommé « Invicible », un croiseur de bataille mis au point en 1907. Doté d’un blindage moindre que celui des cuirassés HMS Dreadnought, le croiseur HMS Invisible était en contrepartie beaucoup plus rapide. Il fut cependant coulé par le SMS Lützow durant la bataille de Jutland qui opposa le Royaume-Uni et l’Empire allemand le 31 mai 1916. Appréciés de la culture populaire, les marins le sont aussi du monde de la publicité pour l’imaginaire qu’ils véhiculent. Les traits du marin représenté sur notre tableau semblent être à l’origine de l’iconographie qui figure sur les paquets de cigarettes « Players Navy Cut » (fig. 1). Le modèle pourrait être Thomas Huntley Wood, qui fut marin sur le vaisseau HMS Edinburgh. Il est représenté par Arthur David McCormick sur un autre tableau, mais cette fois en buste, conservé au HMS Excellent à Whale Island sur l’île de Portsmouth (n° d’inv. P20741). CONTACT US SKU#: 121598 US Shipping $90 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: McCormick was born in Coleraine and studied at the Government School of Design, Belfast. He later traveled to London working with the Illustrated London News among other publications. In 1889, from Trafalgar Studios, McCormick exhibited for the first time with the Royal Academy, London. This would be the beginning of a 30-year relationship with the institution.Snoddy records the artist's address from 1895 as 58 Queen's Road, St. John's Wood; the artist resided at this address for over 40 years. The theme of pirates began to appear in the oeuvre at the turn of the century and the RA index of exhibitors lists two such works shown with them in 1903 and 1904. Among the artist's best-known commissions was the iconic sailor's head and shoulders on the cigarette packets for tobacco manufacturers, John Player & Son in 1927. His works can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, Imperial War Museum and the Borough Council, Coleraine among others.

Three (3) British Watercolor Paintings by Arthur David McCormick and Alfred Fleetwood Varley. 1st and 2nd items: Two (2) Arthur David McCormick (United Kingdom, 1860-1943) watercolor paintings, the first depicting a finely dressed woman seated on a bench overlooking the sea, the second depicting a well dressed man, possibly a sea captain, standing on the steps of a dock outside a building, with papers and walking stick in hands, and ships moored in the distance. Both signed lower right and framed under glass with gold mats stenciled "A.D. MCCORMICK R.A. R.O.I. (Royal Academy; Royal Institute of Oil Painters). Sight: 14" H x 10" W. Framed: 20" H x 16" W. Biography: Irish born artist Arthur David (A.D.) McCormick studied at the College of Design in Belfast before moving to London in 1883 to work as an illustrator. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1889 and would continue to do so over the next 30 years. He made a name for himself with his pirate and sailor illustrations in oil and watercolor, and was best known for the sailor's head illustration that appeared on the cigarette packets produced by John Player and Son. His paintings can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Imperial War Museum, among others. 3rd item: Albert Fleetwood Varley (United Kingdom, 1804-1876) watercolor on paper landscape, depicting two figures in on a country road leading through tall trees. Front is unsigned. Reverse with pencil inscription: ST. GEORGE'S HILL, SURREY BY ALBERT VARLEY. Matted, unframed. Sheet: 13 5/8" H x 10" W. Mat: 19 3/4" H x 16" W.
