        John McCrady (American/Louisiana, 1911-1968)

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

John McCrady (American/Louisiana, 1911-1968), "Discussion", oil on canvas, signed lower right, "Downtown Gallery, New Orleans" label with artist and title on reverse of frame, 20 in. x 34 in., framed, overall 22 3/4 in. x 36 3/4 in. x 1 3/4 in. Provenance: Naomi Marshall, Downtown Gallery, New Orleans, 1997. Note: While John McCrady’s earliest works were more naturalistic in style, after studying at the Arts Students’ League of New York under Thomas Hart Benton and Kenneth Hays Miller, McCrady embraced American Regionalism, as well as studying classical composition and technique. Teresa Parker Farris writes, “Miller introduced McCrady to the multi-stage technique (once used by Rembrandt, Da Vinci, Rubens, and El Greco to give their works an inner luminosity).” Benton, on the other hand, acquainted McCrady with a manner of painting that was stylized and exaggerated. In 1934, McCrady moved back to New Orleans, taking with him the valuable knowledge he had gained at the Arts Students’ League and applying it to southern subject matters with which he was familiar. The current lot, “Discussion,” bears notable similarities to McCrady’s 1935 work, “Political Rally” (sold in these rooms October 11, 2008, lot 245). Both paintings include stylization of the faces, clothing, and hair, although “Political Rally” includes the town square of Oxford, Mississippi for context, while “Discussion” displays indistinct red walls behind the figures. The left side of the crowd depicted in “Political Rally” consists of a group of men arguing and gesticulating in a similar manner to “Discussion;” the animated faces and hand gestures in both works display McCrady’s attention to detail when portraying a passionate debate. Capturing a moment in the lives of the working class is a common theme throughout McCrady’s work and he does so beautifully in this intriguing and exciting painting. Ref.: Marshall, Keith. Provenance: Descended in the family of the artist . . Exh.: "John McCrady 1911-1968". New Orleans Museum of Art. Sept. 26 - Nov. 2, 1975; and illustrated in accompanying catalogue #44. Note: In the catalogue for the 1975 retrospective of John McCrady’s work at the New Orleans Museum of Art, curator Keith Marshall writes, “[McCrady’s] decision to paint the rural South was not an objective choice; it was a necessity.” McCrady painted the rural life and people he knew from his youth in Mississippi and adulthood in New Orleans, often taking inspiration from gospel music and folktales. The work offered here entitled “The Old Woman and the Pig,” was inspired by the nursery rhyme of the same name, a cumulative tale meant to teach children the chain of cause and effect. At the end of the story, the old woman succeeds in getting the stubborn pig to go over the stile. Although originally an English folktale, McCrady places the action in the rural south. Using a technique he invented, he layered acrylic paint over a carbon drawing. With this method, he paints layers of dark blue and teal making the skies overhead look ominous, a warning of the struggles to come as the woman fights to get the animal home after purchasing it at market. John McCrady (American/New Orleans, 1911-1968), "The Creation of Adam and Eve", 1951, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, remnant of exhibition label en verso, 25 in. x 48 in., original frame enhanced by the artist; together with a copy of photograph of McCrady family with the painting. (2 pcs.) Note: Throughout his career, John McCrady painted numerous religious scenes inspired by his own spirituality and Biblical stories. These scenes, while still adhering to McCrady’s regionalist style, also verge on surrealism and abstraction. On the subject of these varying styles of painting, McCrady wrote, “I have never liked being classed in any definite school, as my work has much American Scene subject matter – but also plenty of fantasy – and is built on the abstract. All the painters of the stories of the Bible and Greek mythology were surrealists…any time a man paints an angel floating in the sky, he is painting surrealism. I have certainly done that.” The work offered here, with a larger-than-life Adam and Eve dominating the composition while reclining in a stylized Garden of Eden, stylistically fits the criteria of a surrealist and abstract painting. The color scheme, with lush green fields and a bright blue sky, relates more to McCrady’s more traditional palette for his American Regionalist paintings and highlights the embedded traditional Biblical symbols. The emphasis on Adam’s ribs is a reference to the titular Bible story, where God made Eve from Adam’s rib. The small fig leaf on the left is clear foreshadowing of the fall of man, when Adam and Eve eat from the tree of knowledge, recognize their nudity, and cover themselves with fig leaves. Through these components, McCrady manages to successfully merge his Regionalist landscape style with a haunting and modernized Biblical subject.
