    Rory McEwen,  Scottish 1932-1982 -  Untitled time capsules, c.1965;  oil on canvas, drawings, and found objects, Perspex, some drawings signed and dated 'Rory McEwen', each H33.3 x W21.4 x D4.5 cm (13) (ARR) Note: in the 1960s, McEwen exhibited large scale abstract works in glass and steel, encased in perspex, some which were exhibited at the Edinburgh Festival. Best known for his botanical drawings, which were exhibited at the Redfern Gallery in 1972. He is the only botanical artist to be given a solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, in 1988. He was close friends with Jim Dine, Brice Marden, Cy Twombly and Kenneth Armitage.

NOTE Rory McEwen was the brother of Christian, Lady Hesketh. Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he was a full time musician before becoming an artist at the beginning of the 1950s. A trip to India inspired an interest in botanical illustrations and he subsequently developed the elegant yet detailed handling evident in the present work.
