James McGarrell (1930-2020) American, Signed Exhibition Proof Lithograph. Produced in the 1980s. Depicts a dreamlike image of a racecar driver and a saxophonist in front of a large arched window in striking black and white. Signed in white colored pencil bottom middle, along with the letter "B," indicating it is the second in a series of 4 (A-D), and "E.P. I," indicating this piece was produced in the highest quality for a showing in an exhibition, likely the only (or at least the first) of its kind. Overall Size: 33 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. Sight Size: 23 x 32 in. James McGarrell was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 22nd, 1930 and began painting when he was twenty, becoming an influential American painter and printmaker celebrated for his lush, figurative interiors and intricate landscapes. He studied at Indiana University Bloomington and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before entering the graduate program at the University of California, Los Angeles. His first solo exhibition was in 1955 at the Frank Perls Gallery in Beverly Hills, California, for which he received a Fulbright grant to study at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. He returned to the United States and began teaching at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, going on to be the artist in residence at countless institutions and spending most of his later years as a professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. McGarrell achieved international recognition, representing the United States at the 1968 Venice Biennale and exhibiting his work in over a hundred solo shows worldwide, and was a member of the National Academy who received prestigious honors including the Jimmy Ernst Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Following his death on February 7th, 2020 his legacy continued in numerous permanent collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Centre Pompidou.

Note: In the lot offered here, James McGarrell uses a palette of fiery reds, burnt oranges, and vivid cyan blue to provide a stunning backdrop for the nude bathers caught mid-action jumping into and splashing in the water. His usage of the diptych as a compositional device underscores the intensity and energy of the scene, giving the impression that the painting could not possibly be constrained to a single panel.
