    § Juliet McLeod (1917-1982) A grey on a clifftop signed ‘Juliet McLeod’ (lower left) and inscribed with the artist's address (on the reverse) oil on canvas 74.5 x 100cm Provenance: From the estate of the late Julie Cecil (1942-2022) 97 x 121cm framed The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which has not been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension. There are a few minor undulations caused by impact, for example the horizontal scuff at the upper right corner. The paint layers are in a good stable condition. There is a thin varnish layer present which slightly uneven and yellowed but acceptable. There are a few horizontal drip marks in the lower half which have affected the surface. Across the surface of the painting is a light layer of surface dust including fly spots.

    § Juliet McLeod (1917-1982) Portrait of St. Paddy (1957-1984) in a stable signed, dated and inscribed with the horse's name ' "St. Paddy" / Juliet McLeod 1960’ (lower left) oil on canvas 71 x 91cm Provenance: From the estate of the late Julie Cecil (1942-2022) St. Paddy (1957-1984) was owned and bred by Sir Victor Sassoon, 3rd Bt. (1881-1961) out of the mare Edie Kelly and sired by Aureole, a winner of the Coronation Cup and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. St. Paddy had a notable career, winning both the Epsom Derby and the St Leger in 1960. His performances in both 1960 and 1961 made his sire, Aureole, the leading sire in Great Britain & Ireland for each year. 84 x 103cm framed The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been unlined. The canvas has good tension. There is a deformation in the upper half of the canvas caused by impact. Stretcher keys have become dislodged and fallen between the canvas and lower stretcher bar causing deformations in the lower corners. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition. There is a loss associated with the impact in the upper section of the canvas. The varnish layer is even but has slightly yellowed and has several scuffs across the surface. There is a layer of surface dirt including fly spots.

    dated "1949" by Juliet McLeod (English, 1917-1982), winner of the 1,000 Guineas Stakes and Epsom Oaks in 1949. The Musidora Stakes (founded 1961) was named in this horse's honor. This painting was painted the year Musidora won her two races, in 1949. A year afterwards in 1950, the artist, Juliet McLeod, painted a second portrait of the horse, which is pictured in her book, A Hundred Horses by Juliet McLeod, London, Seeley, Service & Co. Ltd., 1960, on page 55. Frame: 16" high, 20" wide. Small area of damage/loss to background upper center.

In a racing career which lasted from 1956 until November 1958 he ran seventeen times and won eight races. In 1957 he became the first horse trained in Ireland to win the St Leger. The following season he was Europe's leading middle-distance horse, winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
