    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

ROGER MEDEARIS (American, 1920-2001). Winter Landscape, Oil on board. Signed lower right hand corner. Framed. ARTIST PROFILE: Roger Medearis (March 6, 1920 – July 5, 2001) was an American Regionalist painter. He was a student of Thomas Hart Benton while at the Kansas City Art Institute in the late 1930s and took up the technique of egg tempera painting, a rediscovered medium popular with Regionalists. Benton introduced Medearis to the Associated American Artists Gallery in New York City, from which he sold a portrait of his grandmother, Godly Susan, now in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. After World War II, Regionalist art fell out of fashion, replaced by Abstract Expressionism. Unable to sell his works, Medearis stopped painting. In 1966, Philip Desind, a Maryland art dealer, discovered Medearis' work and encouraged him to return to painting. Medearis painted new works until his death in 2001. - Sight: 9.5 x 11.5 inches; frame: 12.5 x 14.5 inches

ROGER MEDEARIS (1920-2001) SIGNED LITHOGRAPH WITH COLOR

    Est: $300 - $400

Roger Norman Medearis (1920-2001) Rhode Island Reds Circa 1980s The hand-colored lithograph, numbered 42 from an edition of only 50 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower center. The pencil inscription, ''Hand Painted / RM'' suggests that Roger Medearis applied the colors to this stone lithograph. Roger Medearis was considered one of Benton's most promising students during their tenure at The Kansas City Art Institute. But following the War, Medearis, like so many Regionalists, became disillusioned with the societal changes that saw the public turn away from the old: Regionalism, and embrace the new: Abstraction. Life happened and it wasn't until decades later that the artist found himself making art once again. This print and others in this auction by Roger Medearis are the result of his return to Regionalism. In the market, some of his stone lithographs are found with no color added. Others are found with only a few colors. The prints up for auction here display the full range of ''color added by hand,'' and in great detail. Image measures 12 x 18, sheet size 16 x 21.5, the frame is 22 x 28 inches. Roger Norman Medearis (1920-2001) The Farmer Takes a Wife 1989 The hand-colored lithograph, an advanced state in at least seven colors, is numbered 91 from an edition of only 100 prints, titled below the image, and signed by the artist in pencil lower right with the date of '89. The words COLOR ADDED BY HAND are below the signature. A printer's embossed chopmark and RM artist's monogram are found lower left corner of the sheet. Life happened and it wasn't until decades later that the artist found himself making art once again - thus the reference found on the back of this print: 'Based on a drawing I made in 1940 - RM.' This print and others in this auction by Roger Medearis are the result of his return to Regionalism. In the market, some of his stone lithographs are found with no color added. Roger Norman Medearis (1920-2001) Family Reunion 1990 The ambitious hand-colored lithograph filled with figures is signed Roger Medearis and dated 1990 lower right in pencil, along with the inscription '' color added by hand.'' The title is on lower center and on the lower left is the artist proof designation of VII/XV near the embossed printer's mark. On the back side in pencil is written 90-134/waterleaf. The Roman numeral inscription designates this as an artist's proof aside from the public edition. Artist's proofs are made under the direct supervision of the artist and considered to be of higher quality than the regular numbered edition. They give the artist a chance to refine details before embarking on the larger edition. Oct. 14, 2023

ROGER MEDEARIS (1920-2001) ARTIST'S PROOF WITH COLORS

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Roger Norman Medearis (1920-2001) Tom Benton Painting a Portrait - 1939 1992 The hand-colored lithograph from an Artist's Proof edition (AP) is signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower center. The inscription, ' color added by hand' is written in pencil below the signature. Artist's proofs are made under the direct supervision of the artist and considered to be of higher quality than the regular numbered edition and only a few are pulled. They give the artist a chance to refine details before embarking on the larger edition. There is added significance to this print. Roger Medearis tells the story of being invited to a surprise birthday party for his instructor of art, Thomas Hart Benton. Unsure of his place in the setting, he was relieved and delighted to find the group at Benton's house standing around an earlier version of this image, making much ado of the artist's lithograph hanging on the wall of their teacher's home. An inscription on this print speaks to this: '' Based on a lithograph I made in 1940 while a student of Thomas Hart Benton - most of those prints were later lost, or destroyed - R. M.'' Roger Medearis was considered one of Benton's most promising students during their tenure at The Kansas City Art Institute. But following the War, Medearis, like so many Regionalists, became disillusioned with societal changes that saw the public turn away from the old: Regionalism, and embrace the new: Abstraction. Life happened and it wasn't until decades later that the artist found himself making art once again. Roger Norman Medearis (American, 1920-2001) Milking Time, 1947 Egg tempera on bo

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Roger Norman Medearis (American, 1920-2001) Milking Time, 1947 Egg tempera on board 14 x 18 inches (35.6 x 45.7 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Medearis 1947 Signed, dated, titled, and inscribed on the reverse: Milking Time / Egg tempera / Roger Medearis / 1947 Property of an Important Midwestern Collector PROVENANCE: Berry-Hill Galleries, New York; Doyle, New York, April 4, 2018, lot 27; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Roger Norman Medearis, the shy son of a Baptist minister, studied painting from 1938 to 1941 at the Kansas City Art Institute with the most dynamic, outspoken, larger than-life member of the Regionalist triumvirate, Thomas Hart Benton. At first blush the two men couldn't be more different, although they were both native Missourians. While Benton loved his bourbon, Medearis avoided alcohol. While Benton was never afraid to sound off, Medearis tended to keep his own counsel. But both men had much more profound things in common, which united them as kindred artistic temperaments: they were hard and steady workers, thoughtful and well-read, and believed that the subjects of America—its landscape, its peoples, its struggles—were not only important but large and worthy themes for high art. Medearis came to the Art Institute bucking the serious reservations of his family and set to work with extraordinary commitment. He took every course Benton offered although, interestingly, he was too reticent to make his own paintings in Benton's classroom. He painted privately in his room and brought his finished pieces to class. Medearis' intensity and penchant for meticulous craftsmanship were not lost on Benton, who considered the young man one of his finest students and included his paintings in the 1941 exhibition of his students' work at the galleries of Associated American Artists in New York. Under Benton's influence, Roger Medearis studied the methods of the Old Masters including making clay models as preparatory studies for multifigural compositions, tilting up the picture plane as a strategy for accommodating a very readable spatial composition, and using egg tempera as a painting medium which dries quickly, is durable, and has a lovely soft sheen (something Benton himself used until he developed an allergy to eggs). Although he was deeply affected by Benton's brand of Regionalism with its strong volumes, bold compositional structure, and undulating rhythms, Medearis was no slavish copyist of Benton. Rather, his American imagery was quieter and more personal, focused less on overt social criticism than on subjects drawn from memories of farms he lived on, landscapes he visited, and crazy family reunions he probably witnessed from a Roger Medearis-like distance. Additionally, as the artist himself remarked, he worked slowly and meticulously, and disliked sharp edges—qualities which give his work a higher level or polish than most of Benton's paintings. Medearis also preferred a golden tone to his imagery, which characterizes the present work, Milking Time. World War II interrupted Roger Medearis' education and career, but after the War he and his young family settled in Connecticut where he set about becoming a serious professional artist. The stars seemed to be aligned. He soon began enjoying critical success, was the subject of several one-person exhibitions in New York in the late 1940s, and in 1950, his painting Family Reunion was accepted for exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's show, "American Painting, 1950"—a major honor for a young artist. Milking Time of 1947 dates to this feverish post-war period of Medearis' production. Despite the bare trees and limited palette, the painting possesses a sense of hopefulness: birds are gathering, things are stirring, clouds are passing out of the picture. It's a scene in which things a

Roger MEDEARIS: Family Reunion - Lithograph, 1990

Original lithograph by Roger Medearis (American, 1920-2001), pencil signed, titled, numbered (70/100) and dated (1990). Medearis was a student of Thomas Hart Benton while at the Kansas City Art Institute in the late 1930s and took up the technique of egg tempera painting, a rediscovered medium popular with Regionalists. Medearis' paintings and lithographs can be found in the collections of the Butler Institute of American Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. He also has a painting hanging next to one of Thomas Hart Benton at the Huntington Library in San Marino, CA. His later years were spent in San Marino with his wife and children. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC. [Image size: Height: 15 in (38.1 cm); Width: 20.5 in (52.07 cm)]. In good condition.
