    Artist(s): Roger Norman Medearis (American, 1920-2001) Title/Subject: "The New Hat" Medium: Egg tempera on board. Signature(s): "Medearis 1961", lower left. Paperwork/Provenance: The piece comes from the personal collection of Alexander Lester Kreger's family, who were neighbors of Medearis in the 1960's and prior. The story passed down through generations of this family is as follows: After Roger gave up painting upon returning from WWII, his then neighbor and and later Mayor of Monterrey Park, Mr. Kreger, was concerned with Medearis' neglected talent, so he took it upon himself to encourage Medearis back into painting. He found that Medearis' yard fence was placed some inches over his property line, which prompted him to negotiate an exchange of property for new paintings by Roger. Medearis reluctantly agreed and produced the three whimsical portraits for his neighbor that year, and continued painting until his death in 2001. Today, his paintings form part of collections, including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, The Butler Institute of Contemporary Art, and more. The back of the frame displays "Roger Medearis / 213 Barranca Drive / Monterey Park, Calif.", which was the address of Medearis during the production of the portraits in this auction. The paintings were in auction in 2011, but were refused sale because it was the family's Mother's wish that they all be sold to one party, which was not possible, due to the way that the auction was structured. The pieces had not left the family or been offered for sale since. Condition: Some stains, including middle of left edge, top edge, and left side near the figure's neck.     ROGER MEDEARIS (American, 1920-2001). Winter Landscape, Oil on board. Signed lower right hand corner. Framed. ARTIST PROFILE: Roger Medearis (March 6, 1920 – July 5, 2001) was an American Regionalist painter. He was a student of Thomas Hart Benton while at the Kansas City Art Institute in the late 1930s and took up the technique of egg tempera painting, a rediscovered medium popular with Regionalists. Benton introduced Medearis to the Associated American Artists Gallery in New York City, from which he sold a portrait of his grandmother, Godly Susan, now in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. After World War II, Regionalist art fell out of fashion, replaced by Abstract Expressionism. Unable to sell his works, Medearis stopped painting. In 1966, Philip Desind, a Maryland art dealer, discovered Medearis' work and encouraged him to return to painting. Medearis painted new works until his death in 2001. - Sight: 9.5 x 11.5 inches; frame: 12.5 x 14.5 inches

(bronze) Depicting a landscape scene near Fillmore, California, overlooking the rounded hills and native oaks of Grimes Canyon, signed and dated 1984 on right edge, edition 7 of 12, with Vose Gallery, Boston, MA label and artist's notes on verso, on a slanted wooden base overall: 12-1/2 x 14-1/2 x 5-1/2 in. (base) This work was originally sculptured in plastiline as a study for the painting, ÔSummer Pastoral.Ó This lot comes with a framed exhibition printing about the work, with a dedication, pencil-signed by the artist and dated 11-30-1984 (7-1/4 x 16-1/4 in. [frame]). The artist's "Summer Pastoral" acrylic on canvas (27 x 40 in.) sold at Coeur d'Alene Art Auction on July 25, 2020 for $59,500 (buyer fees included).

    Roger Norman Medearis (1920-2001) Rhode Island Reds Circa 1980s The hand-colored lithograph, numbered 42 from an edition of only 50 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower center. The pencil inscription, ''Hand Painted / RM'' suggests that Roger Medearis applied the colors to this stone lithograph. Roger Medearis was considered one of Benton's most promising students during their tenure at The Kansas City Art Institute. But following the War, Medearis, like so many Regionalists, became disillusioned with the societal changes that saw the public turn away from the old: Regionalism, and embrace the new: Abstraction. Life happened and it wasn't until decades later that the artist found himself making art once again. This print and others in this auction by Roger Medearis are the result of his return to Regionalism. In the market, some of his stone lithographs are found with no color added. Others are found with only a few colors. The prints up for auction here display the full range of ''color added by hand,'' and in great detail. The words COLOR ADDED BY HAND are below the signature. A printer's embossed chopmark and RM artist's monogram are found lower left corner of the sheet. Roger Medearis was considered one of Benton's most promising students during their tenure at The Kansas City Art Institute. But following the War, Medearis, like so many Regionalists, became disillusioned with the societal changes that saw the public turn away from the old: Regionalism, and embrace the new: Abstraction.     Roger Norman Medearis (1920-2001) Family Reunion 1990 The ambitious hand-colored lithograph filled with figures is signed Roger Medearis and dated 1990 lower right in pencil, along with the inscription '' color added by hand.'' The title is on lower center and on the lower left is the artist proof designation of VII/XV near the embossed printer's mark. On the back side in pencil is written 90-134/waterleaf. The Roman numeral inscription designates this as an artist's proof aside from the public edition. Artist's proofs are made under the direct supervision of the artist and considered to be of higher quality than the regular numbered edition. They give the artist a chance to refine details before embarking on the larger edition. Roger Medearis was considered one of Benton's most promising students during their tenure at The Kansas City Art Institute.     Roger Norman Medearis (1920-2001) Tom Benton Painting a Portrait - 1939 1992 The hand-colored lithograph from an Artist's Proof edition (AP) is signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower center. The inscription, ' color added by hand' is written in pencil below the signature. Artist's proofs are made under the direct supervision of the artist and considered to be of higher quality than the regular numbered edition and only a few are pulled. They give the artist a chance to refine details before embarking on the larger edition. There is added significance to this print. Roger Medearis tells the story of being invited to a surprise birthday party for his instructor of art, Thomas Hart Benton. Unsure of his place in the setting, he was relieved and delighted to find the group at Benton's house standing around an earlier version of this image, making much ado of the artist's lithograph hanging on the wall of their teacher's home. An inscription on this print speaks to this: '' Based on a lithograph I made in 1940 while a student of Thomas Hart Benton - most of those prints were later lost, or destroyed - R. M.'' Roger Medearis was considered one of Benton's most promising students during their tenure at The Kansas City Art Institute. But following the War, Medearis, like so many Regionalists, became disillusioned with societal changes that saw the public turn away from the old: Regionalism, and embrace the new: Abstraction. Life happened and it wasn't until decades later that the artist found himself making art once again.
