He drew further artistic inspiration from the circles of Theodor von Hörmann, Fritz von Uhde and Franz von Lenbach. He spent time in the Dachau artists’ colony and developed a body of work that oscillates between landscape depiction and a Symbolist approach to imagery. As a member of the Hagenbund, Mediz was in close contact with the Viennese art scene, which was also shaped by the critic Ludwig Hevesi. His work, which can be classified as Symbolist and shows echoes of Ferdinand Hodler and Giovanni Segantini, combines a stylised conception of nature with allegorical content. Numerous journeys took him to Hungary and Italy, particularly Rome, whilst stays in Berlin also influenced his artistic development. From 1894 onwards, he lived in Dresden. Mediz was married to the painter Emilie Mediz-Pelikan; their daughter was the artist Gertrude Honzatko-Mediz. Kunst aus Dessauer Privatbesitz, Kunsthalle, 17 November – 10 December 2022, ill. p. 13 The Morteratsch Glacier in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland was one of the most massive glaciers in the Alps. It is surrounded by towering 4,000-meter peaks, seen here in the image with Piz Bernina and the famous snow-covered Bernina Ridge. The view of the majestic Morteratsch Glacier is one of the few surviving paintings from the late work of the artist, who, after the early death of his wife Emilie Mediz-Pelikan in 1908, increasingly focused on graphic arts. Fine draftsmanship combines here with painterly bravura, the grandeur of nature's force with the poetry of its beauty. “The contrasts in the painting serve a symbolism that has yet to be deciphered.
