A painter of southern landscapes, Joseph Meeker was born in Newark, New Jersey and grew up in Auburn, New York. He received a scholarship to the National Academy of Design in New York City, where he studied with the Hudson River School painter Asher B. Durand and with portraitist Charles Loring Elliott. After studying in New York City, he established a studio in Buffalo, 1849-52. He then moved to Louisville, Kentucky 1852-59, before settling permanently in St. Louis, Missouri, where he painted the Louisiana Bayou. During the Civil War he fulfilled his military duties as a Union Navy paymaster on a gunboat that traveled the Mississippi River. While traveling along the Mississippi River he sketched the bayous and swamps of Louisiana. When Meeker returned to St. Louis, Missouri, he became quite successful as a painter of southern landscapes based on the drawings he did in the military. During the 1870s and 1880s, Meeker worked in the manner of Luminism. "Meeker used light and color to heighten emotional impact and captured the hazy atmosphere light in the swampy environment. Meeker's paintings were influenced by the nineteenth century's waning romanticism and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem about eighteenth-century Acadian exiles, Evangeline." Meeker is best known for his bayou swamp scenes, but he also created landscapes of the New England coast, the Wyoming territories, Minnesota, along the Merrimac River (NH), and also created portraits and did some writing.

Many of the greatest nineteenth century American landscape painters traveled to the West Indies to capture the beautiful mountains, valleys, and tropical vistas. The Caribbean provided the warm climate and exotic panoramas often sought out by artists who desired a change in scenery from American topography. Often called the northernmost city in the Caribbean, New Orleans was the perfect departure point for these artists, many of whom left from that port to Cuba, the Bahamas, or other tropical destinations. Joseph Rusling Meeker, who studied under Hudson River School painter Asher B. Durand, was well versed in American landscape painting. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Meeker studied and worked in New York City and Louisville, Kentucky, before settling in St. Louis, Missouri in 1859. During the Civil War, Meeker traveled the Mississippi River with the Union Navy; his time near the mouth of the Mississippi exposed him to a new type of landscape, and he learned to love the humid atmosphere, which dispersed the light in a beautiful, hazy manner. After the war, Meeker continued to make summer trips to the New Orleans area to sketch the nearby lakes, bayous, and swamps; his sketches and notes provided the material needed to complete his canvases later in St. Louis. During Meeker's many trips near the Gulf of Mexico, his extant canvases indicate that he extended his travels to the West Indies. This work bears striking resemblance to a much larger work by Meeker from the same year depicting Cuba near the Yumuri Valley (sold at Neal Auction on September 9, 2017), with the luminous atmospheric effects, mountains, palm trees, and body of water handled with Meeker's characteristic style and skill.

Joseph Meeker (American, 1827-1887). Oil on canvas titled "Morning on the Upper Mississippi" depicting riverboats steaming along Lake Pepin in the dawn light. Signed and dated 1878 along the lower left. There is a label from Richard York Gallery, New York, New York, affixed to the verso, indicating the artwork was included in the 1983 "Sunset to Dawn" exhibition; there are additionally labels from Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc., New York, New York, and the Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, South Carolina. Joseph Meeker grew up in New England, and studied under Hudson River School painter Asher B. Durand at the National Academy of Design in New York City. As Meeker began working independently as an artist, he worked creating landscapes heavily influenced by the Hudson River School and by Luminism. Meeker's relationship with the Mississippi River began during the American Civil War, when he served as a paymaster for the Union Navy on a gunboat sailing up and down the Mississippi River. He was enchanted by the scenes of the bayous, and did extensive sketches of river scenes during this period. Following the war, Meeker made paintings from these sketches, which proved to be extremely successful. Although he is best known for his landscapes of the southern Mississippi, Meeker also traveled up his cherished river to explore its northern reaches. This artwork is the result of one of those journeys. It depicts Lake Pepin as it was in the late 1870s–an important stopover point for the industry and travel steaming up and down the Mississippi. All this industry, however, is overshadowed by the natural beauty of the location: the tall bluffs looming over the water, touched by the first pink of the morning light, the lush trees reaching down to the edge of the lake; and the gulls swooping across the rippled surface of the river, up toward the cloud-studded sky. It is Meeker's eye for the unique beauty of a place that makes his work exceptional; more than just the landscape, he captured the spirit of the locations he painted.

Note: The Tombigbee River, which flows from Northeast Mississippi down to Mobile Bay in Alabama, is approximately 200 miles long and runs through Gainesville and Demopolis before joining the Alabama River and flowing into Mobile Bay. Throughout the 19th century and early 20th century, steamboats frequented the river, bringing people and goods from as far North as the Aberdeen, Mississippi area down to Mobile, Alabama. With a series of seventeen locks and dams at the height of its use, the Tombigbee saw heavy boat and barge traffic, as well as many accidents. Steamboats often encountered dangers of crashing into other boats and risk of fire, and many ended up sinking to the bottom of the river. However, despite the risks, steam travel was overall an efficient way to bring both goods and passengers up and down the river. During his travels in the American South, Joseph Meeker would have certainly spent time on many types of riverboats as he traveled into the wilderness to sketch southern landscapes. Bringing his drawings back to his studio in St. Louis, Meeker completed his magnificent landscape paintings there, imbuing them with his signature hazy atmospheric effects from his brushwork and palette, as seen in the lot pictured here. With golden lighting and Spanish moss draped on tree branches, Meeker depicts a beautiful, mysterious, and mythical landscape near the Tombigbee river.

Provenance: Austin, TX. Note: The Tombigbee River, which flows from Northeast Mississippi down to Mobile Bay in Alabama, is approximately 200 miles long and runs through Gainesville and Demopolis before joining the Alabama River and flowing into Mobile Bay. Throughout the 19th century and early 20th century, steamboats frequented the river, bringing people and goods from as far North as the Aberdeen, Mississippi area down to Mobile, Alabama. With a series of seventeen locks and dams at the height of its use, the Tombigbee saw heavy boat and barge traffic, as well as many accidents. Steamboats often encountered dangers of crashing into other boats and risk of fire, and many ended up sinking to the bottom of the river. However, despite the risks, steam travel was overall an efficient way to bring both goods and passengers up and down the river. During his travels in the American South, Joseph Meeker would have certainly spent time on many types of riverboats as he traveled into the wilderness to sketch southern landscapes. Bringing his drawings back to his studio in St. Louis, Meeker completed his magnificent landscape paintings there, imbuing them with his signature hazy atmospheric effects from his brushwork and palette, as seen in the lot pictured here. With golden lighting and Spanish moss draped on tree branches, Meeker depicts a beautiful, mysterious, and mythical landscape near the Tombigbee river.

Note: Throughout his travels in the southern United States in the 1860s and 70s, Joseph Meeker created a vast number of sketches that he then brought to his studio in St. Louis, where he completed his archetypal atmospheric landscape paintings. Based on French Barbizon and American Tonalism styles, Meekers painting technique in the painting offered here depicts an expansive sky, clouds reflecting the colorful sunset, and lush trees and greenery. Meekers landscapes, filled with marshy wetlands and Spanish moss, reflect Louisiana topography and seldom feature human figures. The inclusion of hunters in this spectacular landscape denotes a rare and special composition in Meekers oeuvre.

Period gilt frame with artist plaque. 20" x 12", framed 29-1/4" x 21-1/4" Notes: Joseph Rusling Meeker studied painting at the National Academy of Design where he was inspired by the luminist landscapes of Asher B. Durand, the academy's director. Settling in St. Louis, Missouri, Meeker became an active participant of the emerging local art community and was a founding member of the St. Louis Art Society and St. Louis Sketch Club. During the Civil War, Meeker closed his studio and served as a paymaster for the Union forces on a U.S. Navy gunboat whose assignment was to traverse the Mississippi River and bayous of Louisiana. Personally, experiencing the variances of the seasons and times of the day of the southern bayous and waterways, profoundly impacted the artist. Upon reopening his studio after the war, Meeker used his sketches and experiences to create his luminous southern landscapes. This charming painting set within a landscape depicts a young couple who have strolled on to a bridge overlooking a stream. The young man carries a fishing pole and tackle bag revealing their intention of going on a fishing expedition and perhaps, more importantly, having the opportunity to spend time together.
