Ed Mell Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1942 - d. 2024

Ed Mell, the acclaimed artist was born in Phoenix in 1942, graduated from LA's Art Center College of Design in 1967, then migrated east to New York City, where he became art director at a major advertising agency. After six years in the big city, Mell ached for desert landscapes. He returned to Phoenix in 1973 and painted part-time while working in commercial art. By 1978, though, he left the 9-to-5 grind and turned to his easel and sculpture full-time. In the decades that followed, his work and his words appeared in the pages of Arizona Highways many times, including on the cover of the magazine's 90th anniversary issue in April 2015.

In it, he has adapted successfully the two-dimensional angularity of his paintings and lithographs to a three-dimensional work. ‘It's something I had in mind for a long time,’ Mell said. ‘I bought some plasticine, which is clay…clay is very forgiving.’ he commented. ‘If I made the head too big, I just kept changing it -like oils, you can change colors.’” - Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona, Wednesday, November 28, 1984. Returning to Arizona in 1970, Mell and his brother launched a Phoenix-based illustration studio while he pursued fine art painting. Known for his minimalist approach initially, Mell evolved to emphasize planes and vibrant colors inspired by nature. Mell noted, "I strive to capture nature’s impact authentically, pushing beyond mere representation to evoke its true essence." Jack Knife is Ed Mell’s most iconic sculptural work; a monumental version stands over eight feet high on Scottsdale, Arizona’s Main Street; it was modeled after Scottsdale’s official city seal, a rider astride a bucking horse.
