Philippe Mercier (German, 1689-1760) A youth drinking wine by candlelight from a glass, and holding a flask Oil on canvas Circa 1750 Philip Mercier was born in Berlin, the son of a Huguenot tapestry worker of French extraction who worked for the Elector of Brandenburg (later, 1701, King Frederick of Prussia). Little is documented about his early life, but Vertue tells us that he studied under the French portraitist Antoine Pesne (“Monsieur Pené”) and at the Prussian Royal Academy before embarking on a European tour through Italy and France. He arrived in England in 1716, “recommended from the Court at Hanover” where, presumably, he had been working since his return from the Grand Tour. Until 1728, Mercier gives the ineluctable impression that he was endeavouring to establish a profitable niche for himself in the London art scene – a scene which was largely moribund in the last dull attenuated gasps of the late Baroque style of Kneller and his followers. The arrival of Prince Frederick from Germany on 7 December 1728 marked a turning point in his fortunes. Mercier was appointed Principal Painter to the prince on 6 February 1729. Mercier's prosperity from royal patronage was not to last many years: he was quarrelling with Zincke (whom Frederick wanted to make Principal Painter) as early as 1729, and in 1734 he fell out with Van Der Myn over the right to teach the princesses to draw. Having lost a royal income of £380 per annum, Mercier retired to the country – probably to Northamptonshire, to be near his friend and patron Samwell, and Vertue tells us that he considered giving up painting altogether. After a brief return to London, where it became apparent that he could not compete as a portraitist with the glamorous generation of painters (Van Loo, Ramsay, Hogarth et al) whose careers had burgeoned in the 1730's, he moved north to York, where he settled from October 1739. His move north marked a change of emphasis in his career, as he concentrated less on portraits and more on the painting of “fancy” or genre pictures. His success was immediate and palpable, and he was patronised by many of the leading nobility of the county: he took a “convenient sash'd house with a large garden, coach house and stable” within the Cathedral precincts. He resided in York for 13 years, with occasional tours further afield: to Ireland in 1747 and Scotland in 1750 (from which trip the present paitning may date, given its Scots provenance), until he decided to rent out his house 1751, and two sales were held of his domestic effects and 27 of his pictures on 22 August 1751. He then returned to London before travelling to Portugal to paint portraits of the English merchant colony there. Mercier's last decade saw the publication of numerous prints after his work, but essentially taste was changing away from the French Watteau-esque style which he exemplified in England. Attributed to Philippe Mercier (French, 1689-1760) Still life with Tea Set Oil on canvas In a carved and gilded 18th century frame The teapot and saucers are Chinese, Kangxi period; most likely circa 1700. However, the handle of the teapot is appears to be replacement, presumably due to damage. iIt seems to be made of metal wrapped with rattan, and likely dates to the 18th century. The other pieces appear to be European. The tea caddy, waste bowl and dish seem to be from one service, given their similar grey appearance, which is something expected to be mid-18th century. They also may be Italian, though this is difficult to confirm. The jug shares a pattern, but the absence of the distinctive blue border found on the other pieces suggests it may belong to a different set. The sugar-bowl, with the waved edge, looks like is a related but of a different pattern. could possibly be North Italian faience or Maiolica. Philippe Mercier (French, 1689-1760) 'Domestic Employment, Needlework' oil on canvas 76 x 63cm This image became popularised when Richard Houston made a mezzotint after the painting, published by Robert Sayer, London. A copy of this is held in the British Museum. The Huguenot painter Philippe Mercier was at the vanguard of one of the most intriguing developments in 18th-century British art: the fancy picture. Playful in tone and fluttering in execution, these works depicted fashionable modern life - women, men and children engaged in scenes of leisure, music, or domestic occupation. Though seemingly light-hearted and decorative, Mercier’s paintings often command attention through their life-size figures and direct psychological presence. 'Domestic Employment, Needlework' exemplifies this genre. A young woman, seated and sewing a translucent fabric, looks up from her work with an engaging, reflective gaze. Her dotted gown, frilled cap and modest shawl suggest middle-class refinement - respectable but not opulent. In 18th-century French and British society, needlework was both a domestic duty and a mark of feminine virtue, patience and moral education. Mercier’s success lay in adapting Continental rococo prototypes for a growing and diversifying British market, increasingly hungry for modern luxuries and intimate portraiture. His fancy pictures celebrated this world of taste and fashion, yet he was not immune to its volatility. As a painter of ephemeral trends, Mercier profited from the culture of modish consumption even as he was eventually eclipsed by it. Here, in a seemingly quiet moment, Mercier captures both the genteel ideal and the tensions beneath it - offering not just a portrait of a woman at work, but a reflection on virtue, identity and social aspiration in an age of shifting values. Oil on canvas, 97 x 70 cm (with frame). The work depicts a gallant scene in which, during a game of "Colin Maillard", a young man declares his love for a lady, while a little Cupid encourages him. On the right, another young woman with a little dog at her feet tries to catch his attention. In the background there is a delicate landscape with a soft blue atmosphere. This painting is attributed to Philippe Mercier, who, without being a direct pupil of Antoine Watteau (who had no formal disciples), painted numerous works in his style. Like other artists such as Nicolas Lancret, Jean-Baptiste Pater or Pierre Antoine Quillard, Mercier adopted Watteau's style, although he also created works influenced by the taste of English painting. Olio su tela, cm 60X50 Raffigurante una giovane con un turbante, il ritratto reca un'attribuzione collezionistica a Philip Mercier, pittore tedesco ma attivo in Inghilterra dal 1716 e specializzato nel genere del ritratto. interessante notare come l'effigiato abbia una somiglianza con l'artista e lo si coglie guardando la mezzatinta custodita alla National Gallery di Washington (cfr. Smith, John Chaloner, British mezzotinto portraits, being a descriptive catalogue of these engravings from the introduction of the art to the early part of the present century, vol. 4. London, 1884).

Attributed to Philip Mercier (1689-1760) Mascarade 92cm x 137cm With frame 109cm x 156cm Provenance: Private Collection After the painting 'Coquettes' by Watteau in the Hermitage, St.Petersberg. Philip Mercier was born in Berlin, the son of a Huguenot tapestry worker who came to London in 1716 at the recommendation of the Court of Hanover. Between 1720 and 1727, he was recorded as living at No.40 Leicester Square. His early successes in London were of Watteau inspired fêtes galantes with the tradition of Dutch 17th century portraiture.
