Lot 176: Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915)

Auction Date: Nov 18, 2021

Estimate: €25,000 - €35,000

Description: Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915), Fishing boats in a calm, signed 'HW Mesdag.' (lower right), oil on canvas, 89x70 cm, Provenance: -With Kunsthandel Borzo, 's-Hertogenbosch. -Auction, Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 25 October 2005, lot 232, where acquired by the present owner. When Hendrik Willem Mesdag (Groningen 1831 – The Hague 1915) came to The Hague in 1869, his reputation had not yet been established. For this reason, there was some doubt as to admitting him as a member of het Schilderkundig Genootschap Pulchri Studio. This doubt was put to rest immediately in 1870 when, to everyone’s amazement, he received the gold medal at the Paris Salon with his work 'Les Brisants de la Mer du Nord'. Later a reporter described the entrance of Mesdag in The Hague as: ‘Veni, vidi, vici!’. Finally, he became a member of Pulchri Studio, and not just an ordinary member: he became one of the most important pillars of this society. The painting ‘Les Brisants’ marked the start of Mesdag’s illustrious career as a seascape painter. Whereas he began with a depiction of the surf of the North Sea, he later added fishing boats to his seascapes. Mesdag worshipped the sea, and portrayed it tirelessly in hundreds of paintings, often with formidable skies, as in the painting now on offer. This lot shows us a composition of the North Sea on a quiet, seemingly windless day. A fishing boat is returning home, met by the sloop on the right; other ships are just visible in the distance on the horizon. The sea is depicted in a series of blue and green-grey tones. The focus is mainly on an impressive typical Dutch cloud formation that determines the atmosphere of the painting. With his impressionistic style Mesdag was a leading light of the The Hague School....

Lot 80: Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915)

Auction Date: Dec 15, 2020

Estimate: €15,000 - €25,000

Description: Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) 'Avondstemming' / Fisherwomen welcoming the return of the fleet at the beach of Scheveningen watercolour on paper, 51,5x72,5 cm Literature: -Johan Poort, 'Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915), Oeuvrecatalogus', Wassenaar 1989, colour ill. p. 430 and ill. no. A30.10 on p. 445, as: 'Avondstemming'. -Pieter A. Scheen, 'Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1880', The Hague 1981, colour ill. no. 603, as: 'Avondstemming'. Provenance: -With Kunsthandel Pieter A. Scheen, The Hague. This seascape at dusk is a beautiful Mesdag that was once part of the collection of the prominent The Hague-based art dealer, Pieter Scheen. His popular Lexicon of Dutch Visual Artists 1750-1950 is still today a standard work of reference for the Dutch visual Arts. One or more pieces of work by the more important artists are depicted in this book, each time one of their best pieces – a typical example of that artist’s work. He included the watercolour that is now part of the auction in his book which implies that he considered it to be representative of the work of one of the leaders of the Hague School, Hendrik Willem Mesdag. And rightly so. Mesdag was, and still is famous for his turbulent seas, but also his calm evening scenes, such as this piece. The sun has just set and the fishing boats are returning with their catch. The fisherwomen are standing, waiting on the sandflat, and to the left of the painting the anchor-man is wading out into the sea, perhaps to take the anchor or to help the helmsman. A scene from a time long ago, timeless by its serenity. A Distinguished Collection: lots 59-92. signed 'H W Mesdag' (lower right)...

Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915)

Lot 126: Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915)

Auction Date: Nov 13, 2019

Estimate: €20,000 - €30,000

Description: A fishing boat anchored, signed 'H W Mesdag' (lower right), watercolour on paper, 43,5x56,5 cm, Hendrik Willem Mesdag can be regarded as one of the key-members of the Hague School, a Dutch movement in art which had its peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Trained in a Brussels milieu where he received painting lessons from his nephew Laurens Alma Tadema and Willem Roelofs, Mesdag became acquainted there with plein air landscape painting by Belgian and Barbizon artists. Inspired by this innovative movement, Mesdag signed up as a member of the Société Libre des Beaux Arts, a society which promoted studies directly after nature, and soon his studio became a centre of artistic life where Dutch and Belgian painters met. Following a visit to the island of Norderney in 1868, Mesdag decided to become a seascape painter and rented a room in Scheveningen where he could study his source of inspiration closely. His breakthrough came after winning a gold medal at the Paris Salon for his painting 'Les brisants de la Mer du Nord'. Influential international critics immediately praised Mesdag’s innovative use of atmospheric effects and refined tonalities. A Belgian critic admired Mesdag’s ‘truthfulness’ towards reality and personal expression. The idea of a new Dutch movement gained an impetus after the Dutch critic J. van Santen Kolff labelled the paintings by a.o. Jacob Maris and Mesdag as ‘Hague School’ in 1875, sharing the use of free brushstrokes, grey tones and landscapes near The Hague as their subject matter. The Hague School movement was born. Works by these artists are nowadays to be found in several important museums in The Netherlands and abroad. The current lot, titled ‘A fishing boat anchored’, is one of the most outstanding examples of Hague School watercolours. Watercolours were a popular medium for Hague School artists as they offered an opportunity to use different atmospheric hues in a very refined way. Although no outspoken colours were used in the current lot, it has a freshness and vividness that is seldom reached in Hague School watercolours. The subtle tones of the breakers and the daring close-up of the boat make this watercolour one of the highlights of Hague School works on paper. Literature: -Pieter A. Scheen, 'Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1880', The Hague 1981, ill. no. 597, as: 'Vissersboot voor anker'. -Johan Poort, 'Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915), Oeuvrecatalogus', Wassenaar 1989, p. 437, ill. no. Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915)

Lot 163: Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915)

Auction Date: Nov 13, 2019

Estimate: €30,000 - €40,000

Description: Heavy weather, signed 'HW. Mesdag' (lower left), oil on canvas, 90x70 cm, Hendrik Willem Mesdag discovered that the sea, the fishing world and everything connected to this subject became a constant source of inspiration. By painting these subjects he captured a part of the history of the Scheveningen fishing industry. There has been no other painter who concentrated solely on the Scheveningen vessel, known as the bomschuit, in full action. Mesdag captured these vessels: leaving the coast, struggling to sail in the wind, on the high seas with fierce currents, or - approaching the coast at great speed with strong winds behind. In terms of composition, the upcoming fleet of lot 163 has many similarities with a painting from 1897, the 'Return of the fishing vessels' (Johan Poort ill. no. 1897.10, and illustrated on the cover of the catalog raisonné). The sky is grey and cloudy, the waves in soft grey and white tones. In the painting now in auction, Mesdag created a much more dramatic atmosphere: we see the return of the fleet against a deep dark sky with black coloured clouds in the late afternoon. The sun's rays just shine through and illuminate the waves in the surf and the ocher-coloured mainsail. At the same time on the horizon in the distance, it appears to be raining. An experienced sailor can deduce from the position of the sails that the boat - before the wind - is approaching its final destination. The sailors are in the process of regulating speed, braking as it were. In order not to turn transversely, both sails - the jib and the mainsail - are reduced. The jib is lowered sufficiently to catch the wind; the gaff of the mainsail is also lowered . When this work was painted, Mesdag was already well established in the national and international art world of his time. In 1898 he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau by Queen Wilhemina. Until his death in 1915 he would visit the sea almost daily to seek inspiration for his paintings, also in his later years when the coast had dramatically changed due to industrialisation. The present painting provides the opportunity to revisit the natural beauty of the North Sea prior to its many changes. Provenance: -With Kunsthandel Gebroeders Douwes Fine Art, Amsterdam, no. 9291, as: 'Zwaar weer op komst' (according to labels attached to the stretcher). -Private collection, the Netherlands....
