Notice: Peintre de batailles, Pieter Meulener est le fils de Jan Molenaer (mort vers 1646) auprès duquel il reçut un premier apprentissage. Il entra ensuite dans l’atelier de Sebastien Vrancx (1573-1647) puis devint maître au sein de la Guilde d’Anvers dans les années 1631-1632. Notre peintre a vu le travail du batailliste Peter Snayers (1592-1667) dont il retient il fougue des cavaliers sur leur monture cabrée, les teintes terreuses qu’il accentue et rehausse d’éclatantes pointes de rouge.

PIETER MEULENER (Antwerp, 1602-1654). "Battle scene". Oil on copper. Signed with monogram at the bottom. Measurements: 38 x 57 cm; 57 x 72 cm (frame). In a wide Flemish landscape of panoramic character, a scene of equestrian combat is developed, representative of the mastery of Pieter Meulener in the genre of battles. In the foreground, an assailant armed with rifle or musket points with determination towards a rider who, surprised, opens his mouth in a gesture of fury, accentuating the dramatic tension of the moment. All around them, the army advances swiftly along the dirt road, while some appear already fallen from their mounts or are confused among the dust and the tumult of combat. Behind a wooded strip, where the sniper is located, other hidden figures are insinuated, preparing an ambush, while the groups of cavalry are dispersed by the terrain. The landscape, of cold tones and misty atmosphere, responds to the Flemish taste of the 17th century, with wide skies, distant horizons and a careful transition of lights that gives depth to the composition. The work combines the narrative energy of Flemish Baroque with the descriptive sense inherited from the landscape tradition of Rubens and Snayers, offering a vibrant and dynamic vision of war on horseback. Pieter Meulener was the son of Jan de Meuleneer or Molenaer, who is recorded as having been enrolled in the Antwerp painters' guild in 1598 and who died there in 1645, but of whom no works are known. In 1631 Pieter joined the guild as the son of a master, possibly in order to marry as an independent master, although it is likely that he continued to work in his father's workshop for some time, as the first signed works do not appear until years later, to be mostly between 1642 and 1654, at which time Meulener must have acquired a good reputation as a painter of battles and landscapes. In some of his early works, particularly those of some documentary value, such as The Entry of the Cardinal-Infante Don Ferdinand of Austria into Antwerp on April 17, 1635 (Amsterdam, Instituut Collectie Nederland), he still makes use of abruptly raised landscape backgrounds in the manner of Sebastian Vrancx, with a very high horizon line to allow an almost topographical view of the terrain, but imaginary combats are more common in his production, such as the seven belonging to the Museo del Prado, conceived with mere decorative value and with a more natural point of view, low horizons and integration of the figures in the landscape with which they seem to merge.

SCHLACHTENSZENE UNTER DUNKLEN WOLKEN Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 42,5 x 66,6 cm. Nur wenige Maler haben sich so intensiv mit Kampfereignissen während des Dreißigjährigen Krieges befasst wie Pieter Meulener. Der in Europa tobende Krieg von 1618 bis 1648 beherrschte nahezu die Schaffenszeit des Malers. So dokumentierte er etwa „Die Schlacht bei Nördlingen“, ein „Reitergefecht zwischen Kaiserlichen und Schweden“ oder „Der Tod Gustav Adolfs in der Schlacht bei Lützen“ – Gemälde, die sich heute in öffentlichen Sammlungen in Wien oder Stockholm befinden. Meulener war Schüler von Pieter Snayers (um 1592-1666/67), dessen Kompositionsstil er sich auch anschloss. Das hier präsentierte Gemälde lässt sich zwar keiner bestimmten Begebenheit zuordnen, zeigt sich jedoch in der reifen hohen Qualität der Werke des Malers. Das Kampfgetümmel wird von einer düsteren Rauch- und Wolkendecke überfangen, lebensnah und dramatisch vorgeführt – mit Einzelheiten, wie etwa einem die Flucht ergreifenden Mann links im Bild. Anmerkung: Meulener malte vorwiegend Reitergefechte mit Schilderungen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. Im Vergleich zu seinem Lehrer Pieter Snayers (um 1592-1666/67) ist der Standpunkt des Betrachters niedriger, der Pinselduktus feiner. A.R. Comment: Cardinal Infante Ferdinand (1609-1641), younger son of the Spanish King Philip III, was sent to the Catholic Netherlands to succeed Archduchess Isabella, widow of the much-loved Archduke Albert, who died in 1633. After a short interlude of two years during which Francisco de Moncalda served as governor of the province, a Habsburg took over the reins of the Spanish Netherlands. Ferdinand of Spain's mission was to lift the blockade imposed on the Scheldt by the Dutch and to restore Antwerp to its former prosperity. After the victory of the Spanish allies at Nordlingen, the city of Antwerp invited the victorious Cardinal Infante to make a triumphant entry on April 17, 1635. The hero was then 25 years old and his blondness, immortalized in the portraits made of him by Velasquez, distinguishes him, in our painting, on his gray horse, dressed in purple, a symbol of power.

Nel 1631 divenne maestro della Gilda di San Luca di Anversa. Dopo il 1645 schiarì la gamma cromatica della sua tavolozza e si avvicinò ai modi di Palamedes Palamedesz, con il quale fu sovente confuso. La tela in esame trova precisi confronti con quella esitata presso la Sotheby's di Londra il 12 luglio 2001, lotto 181 (fig.1), anch'essa tipica della produzione giovanile e della prima maturità, che nelle cromie, come nei movimenti di truppe sul fondale, si può altresì confrontare con la tela più tarda raffigurante l'assedio di Magdeburgo firmata e datata 1650. Oil on canvas. He specialised in battle themes, history and landscapes with figures. He became a teacher in Antwerp in 1631. He was greatly influenced by Snayers. A wide panoramic composition with a low horizon. In the foreground, against a background of trees, groups of cavalry are distributed, as is characteristic of this specialist, on different planes, with those in the foreground standing out due to their violently foreshortened postures and touches of bright colour. The galloping soldiers, who form a zigzag pattern, advance towards the enemy, contribute to the dynamism of the composition. To give depth, the branches and elements in the foreground are carefully worked. The wide background of clouds, with heavy clouds and cannon smoke, create a special atmosphere. Certificate of authenticity from Van Hees Art Valuations an private sales signed by Michael Van Hees in 2008 is included. Dimensions: 108 x 153 cm.

Ein Gemälde aus der Hand des Pieter Meulener aus dem Jahr 1644 mit annähernd der gleichen Komposition wird im Museo del Prado in Madrid aufbewahrt (Inv.Nr. 1566). Meulener malte vorwiegend Reitergefechte mit Schilderungen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. En sucesivas etapas de su producción será influenciado por la obra de Gedicht van P. de Neyn y finalmente por Anthoine Palamedesz con quien a veces se confunden sus obras. Pieter Meulener was a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp and was registered as a relative of another member of the Guild. From biographical information, we know that he was a pupil of his father, the genre painter Jan de Meuleneer, and that in his homeland, he was pretty successful as a landscape painter, specialising in battles. The choice of this genre reflects the influence of his contemporary Pieter Snayers, who, in turn, devoted his work to the 'staging' of topographical views of battles that had actually been fought; in other words, a historical depiction. In this painting, the bloody scene of the fight against the enemy - probably Turkish - in the foreground, is combined with the delicate landscape of a medieval fortress on high ground, accompanied by the dust that animates the clash raging at the bottom of the valley.

MEULENER, PIETER Antwerp 1602 - 1654 77 x 110 cm Two cavalry skirmishes. A pair. Oil/canvas, relined. Spanish private collection. The main theme in Meulener's battle paintings are - according to his life dates - episodes and scenes of the Thirty Years' War. In his style he follows his teacher Pieter Snayers, whereby, in contrast to him, he does not paint the battles in a panoramic view, i.e. in the manner of topographical-analytical battle painting, but restricts himself to the description of the fight in itself. He usually composes his cavalry skirmishes in such a way that the riders concentrate in close combat at one point in the picture.
