Sonnenuntergang über der Nordsee bei der westfriesischen Insel Texel. Öl auf Papier, montiert. 20,3 x 25,7 cm. Verso signiert und datiert "Mevius pinx. Texel 1839". Die für Mevius üblichen Schiffsdarstellungen in der Tradition der Marinemalerei fehlen in diesem Werk. Stattdessen konzentriert sich der Künstler vollständig auf die Wiedergabe der besonderen atmosphärischen Aura eines Sonnenuntergangs über dem Meer. Für eine fokussierte Betrachtung der Lichtstimmung eignete sich die im 19. Jahrhundert neu formulierte Komposition der "leeren See" besonders. Mevius subtil nuancierte Farbveränderungen lösen eine ruhige und ausgewogene Empfindung aus. Die beinahe grenzenlose Wassermasse lädt zum Verlieren und Finden ganz im romantischen Sinne ein und erinnert an Werke Caspar David Friedrichs.
