Die junge Erzherzogin trägt in ihrer Perücke einen aufwändig gearbeiteten Haarstecker (Agraffe) mit vier pendelnden Diamanttropfen. Am Ohr ein Ohrgehänge mit drei Diamanttropfen. Die markante Agraffe und ein sehr ähnliches Ohrgehänge lassen sich auf einem Portät der bayerischen Kurfürstin und Kaiserin Maria Amalia (1701-1756), einer geborenen Erzherzogin von Österreich, nachweisen. Johann Gottfried Auerbach fertigte ein in Privatbesitz befindliches Staatsporträt der Kaiserin, auf welchem sie diese Schmuckstücke durch weiteren wertvollen Diamantschmuck ergänzt. Auch auf einem Bildnis ihrer Tochter, Prinzessin Theresia Benedicte von Bayern (1725-1743) glaubt man, die Agraffe wiederzuerkennen. Dieses wurde von George Desmarées kurz vor deren Ableben geschaffen. Es liegt nahe, in der Agraffe und den Ohrgehängen Teile jenes Schmuckes zu sehen, die Erzherzogin Maria Amalia 1722 zu ihrer Hochzeit geschenkt bekommen hatte. Und ebenso kann man vermuten, dass nach dem Tod von Prinzessin Theresia Benedicte der Schmuck wieder an das Haus Haus Habsburg zurückfiel. Physiognomische Ähnlichkeiten mit anderen Bildnissen der früh verstorbenen Erzherzogin lassen uns zu dem Schluss kommen, dass es sich bei dem vorliegenden Porträt um eine Darstellung von Johanna Gabriela von Österreich (1750 Wien - 1762 ebenda) handeln könnte. Diese war das elfte Kind und die achte Tochter von Maria Theresia und ihrem Gemahl Kaiser Franz I. Stephan. Zeitgenössische Berichte beschreiben sie als besonders gutmütig, freundlich und am Kaiserhof sehr beliebt. Ab ihrem dritten Lebensjahr erhielt sie eine umfassende Ausbildung, die Fächer wie Latein, Fremdsprachen, Mathematik sowie Musik und Tanz umfasste. Eine besonders innige Beziehung pflegte sie zu ihrer ein Jahr jüngeren Schwester Maria Josepha (der späteren sächsischen Kurfürstin und Königin von Polen), mit der sie gemeinsam erzogen wurde und das Zimmer teilte. Im Rahmen der heiratspolitischen Planungen Maria Theresias war Johanna Gabriele als Braut für König Ferdinand IV. von Neapel-Sizilien vorgesehen worden. Noch bevor die Vermählung stattfinden konnte, erkrankte die Erzherzogin im Dezember 1762 an den Pocken, sie verstarb einen Tag vor Heiligabend. Ihre Rolle als künftige Königin von Neapel wurde später von ihrer Schwester Maria Karolina übernommen. The present paintings exemplify the official state portrait of the mid-eighteenth-century Habsburg Monarchy, conceived to project dynastic legitimacy and ceremonial authority in the wake of Maria Theresa’s accession in 1740, an event immediately contested and followed by the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–48). Having succeeded her father, Emperor Charles VI, as Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, Maria Theresa is portrayed as sovereign in her own right; in 1745 the imperial crown was secured for her husband, Francis Stephen, as Francis I (1708–1765), completing the dynastic image of Habsburg-Lorraine rule. Maria Theresa (1717–1780) appears in court dress beside the regalia of her realms, crowns associated with Hungary and Bohemia, together with orb and scepter, arranged on a crimson velvet cushion against an architectural interior and curtain of state, a visual shorthand for constitutional claims and territorial authority. Francis I is rendered with the precision typical of the Vienna court manner: the richly brocaded coat, crisp lace at the cuffs and throat, and the shimmer of embroidered trims are described with meticulous care. Accents of metallic sheen and carefully modelled textures, silk, fur and decoration, heighten the sense of ceremonial splendour and rank. Such pendants are closely aligned with the Vienna court portrait tradition defined by Martin van Meytens, who established authoritative compositional types: an intentional imagery devised for political display and broad dissemination throughout the Habsburg lands. Meytens, who settled in Vienna around 1730, served as court painter from 1732 and became director of the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna in 1759. An interesting comparison is offered by Martin van Meytens full-length portrait of Maria Theresa in a pink lace dress (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Gemäldegalerie, inv. no. 8762), displayed in the Zeremoniensaal at Schloss Schönbrunn, where the Empress is presented in ceremonial guise beside the regalia of her realms. A further comparison is provided by Meytens’s dynastic family portrait in the Royal Apartments, Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv. O.d.A. 1911 no. 1431), while a closely related type of Emperor Francis I in rich court dress is conserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (Gemäldegalerie, inv. no. 3440).

Halbfiguriges, fein aufgefasstes Bildnis der nach links gerichteten Maria Theresia in prächtigen Gewändern mit Goldstickerei und Hermelinbesatz. Links neben ihr die von Perlen und Edelsteinen besetzten Krone, ihre Brust von einer breiten Brosche mit Diamanten geziert, deren Pracht sich im Ohrgeschmeide und im Diadem wiederfindet. Maria Theresia – landläufig als Kaiserin bezeichnet, obgleich die Kaiserwürde ihrem Gemahl zukam – war regierende Erzherzogin von Österreich und Königin u. a. von Ungarn und Böhmen. Sie nahm im Wesentlichen die Regierungsgeschäfte in die Hand und zählte zu den bedeutenden Monarchen in der Ära des aufgeklärten Absolutismus. 1745 hatten ihre politischen Anstrengungen Erfolg: ihr Gatte Franz I Stephan von Lothringen wurde zum Römisch-Deutschen Kaiser gewählt. Trotz des verlustreichen österreichischen Erbfolgekrieges gelang es ihr als Herrscherin umfassende Reformen insbesondere in der Staatsorganisation, der Justiz und im Bildungswesen durchzusetzen. Martin van Meytens war ein aus den Niederlanden stammender schwedischer Maler, der zum Wiener Hofmaler avancierte. Als Sohn von Peter Martin van Meytens d. Ä. erhielt er gemeinsam mit seinem Verwandten George de Marées seine erste Ausbildung bei seinem Vater in Stockholm. 1714 ging er nach England, um sich an Portraits des Anton van Dyck zu schulen. 1717 wurde er in Paris Schüler des Emailmalers Charles Boit, mit dem zusammen er in Dresden für August den Starken gearbeitet hat. In Frankreich wurde Meytens als Miniaturist geschätzt, vom Herzog von Orléans protegiert und von Zar Peter dem Großen beauftragt. Nach einem längeren Aufenthalt in Italien ließ er sich 1731 endgültig in Wien nieder, wo er bald zum kaiserlichen Kammermaler ernannt wurde und alsbald den Ruhm als bevorzugter Maler des Kaiserhauses unter der Regentschaft Maria Theresias ab 1740 genoss. The present portrait depicts the young Maria Theresia seated on an opulent throne, symbolising her royal authority. Her right-hand rests on the Holy Crown of Hungary, which is placed on a cushion with a sceptre. On 25 June 1741 Maria Theresia was crowned Queen of Hungary at the age of 24. She was the first woman ever to hold this position, and the coronation marked a pivotal moment in solidifying the authority of her rule, at a time when she faced challenges from various European powers. The birth of her third child and first son, Joseph II, later Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria, some months before the coronation had also further strengthened her position. After working in various European cities, Martin van Meytens settled in Vienna around 1730, where he was appointed court painter in 1732. Primarily a portrait artist, Meytens portrayed members of the imperial family and the nobility of Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, and Moravia. His works are characterised by a precise and detailed depiction of eighteenth-century court fashion, showcasing exquisite details in lacework and embroidery, as demonstrated in this painting. In addition to successfully running his workshop and producing a large number of portraits, van Meytens was appointed director of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna (1759), overseeing significant imperial painting commissions. The German art historian and collector Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn (1712–1780) praised him as the ‘Van Dyck of the present day’. It has been suggested the present portrait has a Russian provenance, and as there was an interest in owning portraits of Maria Theresia by the Russian court and aristocracy this is plausible.

Neben ihm, rechts auf einer kleinen Konsole, ein rotes Samtkissen, darauf die Insignien der Macht, eine Krone und ein goldener, mit Edelsteinen verzierter Reichsapfel. Beide blicken voller Aufmerksamkeit aus dem Bild heraus. Fein ausgearbeitete repräsentative Bildnisse. Eddleman (1940–2022) We are grateful to Georg Lechner for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. Thus far, only two versions of the present composition have been known, one conserved in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg (inv. no. ГЭ-5283) and the other in the Mauritshuis in The Hague (inv. no. 38). Whereas the painting in Russia must be identified as a work of high quality by the hand of van Meytens, the Mauritshuis version is a somewhat simplified variant, which today is rightly classified as a workshop replica (see B. Broos, A. van Suchtelen, Portraits in the Mauritshuis. 1430–1790, The Hague, Zwolle 2004, p. 291, cat. no. 38). Differences can primarily be made out in the rendering of the backdrop, in the gold embroidery of the dress, and, most obviously, in the number of crowns depicted. The painting in Saint Petersburg shows the Bohemian crown of Saint Wenceslas, the Hungarian crown of Saint Stephen, the archducal coronet, and, in the background, what is probably the Imperial Crown of Austria, namely the Crown of Emperor Rudolf II, which deviates more conspicuously from the original. The painting in The Hague shows Maria Theresia with three crowns as queen of Hungary and Bohemia, while in the present work they have been limited to the archducal coronet and the crown of Saint Wenceslas. This distinct feature suggests that the work was probably made for a patron or recipient living in Bohemia. Both the Saint Petersburg painting and the picture in The Hague have come with pendants in the form of portraits of Maria Theresia’s husband, Emperor Franz I Stephan. In both cases he is shown wearing the golden Spanish court dress and holding the sceptre, with the Imperial crown depicted on the table next to him. This establishes 1745, the year in which he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor, as terminus post quem. In all these pictures Maria Theresia and Franz I Stephan look considerably younger than in other versions, so that it must be assumed that the paintings were executed between 1745 and 1750. Whereas the pair in The Hague seems to go back to the collection of William IV of Orange (see B. Broos, A. van Suchtelen 2004, ibid., 2004, p. 291, cat nos. 37 and 38), the paintings in Saint Petersburg entered the Hermitage from the now-reconstructed castle of Carskaja Slavyanka. For the present portrait of Maria Theresia it must therefore be assumed that it also comes from noble origins. It seems likely that the present painting likewise had a companion piece depicting Franz I Stephan. Matching the paintings in Russia and the Netherlands, it might also have shown him in Spanish court dress and wearing a hat decorated with blue feathers. It can be noted that the facial features in the present portrait show many similarities to the sculptural quality of the portraits in pastel by Jean-Étienne Liotard of Maria Theresia, (see M. Roethlisberger et.al., Liotard: Catalogue, Source et Correspondance, Doornspijk 2008, cat. nos. 108, figs. 158/161; and cat. nos. 109/110, figs. 159/160). Further details as the lace, the embroidery of the dress, the coiffure, the soft modelling of the face, and the position of the hands are of superb quality and combine to form a harmonious whole. Closely linked to the life and legacy of Empress Maria Theresia is the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. From 1743, Maria Theresia had the summer residency remodeled and extended by architect Nikolaus Pacassi for her growing family. Two paintings by Bernado Bellotto from 1759/60, conserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, show the renovated complex (inv. nos. 1666 and 1667). Sale proceeds of this lot will benefit the Eddleman Quantum Institute, a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing science and technology through quantum research.

Martin van Meytens (1695-1770, attributed to): Portraits of Emperor Francis I Stefan and Empress Maria Theresia, oil on canvas, 18th C. Work: 91 x 71 cm Frame: 112 x 92 cm Francis I (1708 - 1765) was Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, and Grand Duke of Tuscany. He became the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Austria, and Tuscany through his marriage to Maria Theresa, daughter of Emperor Charles VI. Francis was the last non-Habsburg monarch of the Empire. The couple were the founders of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, and their marriage produced sixteen children ( link). Maria Theresa (1717 - 1780) was ruler of the Habsburg dominions from 1740 until her death in 1780, and the only woman to hold the position suo jure (in her own right). She was the sovereign of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Transylvania, Mantua, Milan, Galicia and Lodomeria, the Austrian Netherlands, and Parma. By marriage, she was Duchess of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany, and Holy Roman Empress ( link).

Repräsentatives, höfisches Bildnis des Habsburgers (1695 - 1740), Vater von Kaiserin Maria Theresia. 1711 wurde er als Karl VI. zum Römisch-Deutschen Kaiser gesalbt, er war zugleich Erzherzog von Österreich, Souverän der übrigen habsburgischen Erblande, u. a. als Karl III. König von Ungarn und Kroatien sowie als Karl II. König von Böhmen. Er trägt eine lange Allongeperücke und ein dunkles, spanisches Mantelkleid, sein Hut ist mit silbergrünen Straußenfedern und einer prächtigen Agraffe mit Edelsteinen geschmückt. Unter dem aus feinster französischer Spitze gearbeiteten Jabot erkennt man deutlich die goldene Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies als höchste Auszeichnung der Habsburger. Martin van Meytens als Kaiserliche Kammermaler selbst und seine Werkstatt in Wien schufen zahlreiche Bildnisse des Kaisers, die nicht nur der Ausstattung und Repräsentation von Schlössern und bedeutenden Gebäuden in seinem großen Reich dienten, sondern auch als Staatsgeschenke. (Stockholm 1695–1770 Vienna) Portrait of Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor (1741–1790), at a young age, oil on canvas, 149.5 x 116.5 cm, unframed Provenance: sale, Sotheby’s, Monaco, 19 June 1994, lot 441 (as Martin van Meytens and workshop); Private collection, Belgium We are grateful to Georg Lechner for endorsing the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. Expectations were high for the first born son of Empress Maria Theresia, Joseph II, who is portrayed in the present work. His left hand on his sword and his right nonchalantly pointing in the distance, the prince is captured as a true sovereign aware of his future. The young Joseph is portrayed wearing a deep blue velvet and richly embroidered Hungarian costume, later known as the 'Díszmagyar', consisting of the 'mente', the outer coat, richly lined with ermine, and the 'dolmány', a fitted jacket decorated with braids. The Order of the Golden Fleece completes the costume, a reference to his future appointment as grandmaster of the order in 1765. As his mother was crowned Queen of Hungary in the year of Joseph’s birth, one can presume that she proudly had her heir portrayed in the Hungarian ceremonial fashion. Displayed behind on a red cushion are the Hungarian crown and the archducal coronet, holding the heavy golden imperial mantle elegantly draped around the young prince. The present painting relates to an unattributed portrait of the same sitter conserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 7059). The differences between the Vienna work and the present work are the dimensions and the colour of the velvet, which is green in the Vienna painting. A preparatory sketch is preserved in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 39803). After working in various European cities, Martin van Meytens settled in Vienna around 1730, where he was appointed court painter in 1732. Working mostly as a portrait painter, Meytens portrayed the members of the imperial family and the nobility of Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, and Moravia. His works are characterized by a precise and detailed representation of 18th-century court fashion, showing exquisite details in lacework and embroidery, of which the present painting attests. Besides successfully running his workshop and delivering a vast amount of portraits, Van Meytens was also Director of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna (1759) and oversaw significant imperial painting commissions. German art historian and collector Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn (1712–1780) lauded him as the ‘Van Dyck of the present day’.

Martin van Meytens war ein Portraitmaler am Wiener Hof.Portrait eines adeligen Jünglings Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 95 x 70 cm. Vor dunklem Hintergrund das Dreiviertelportrait des Jungen mit weißer Perücke, einem Brustpanzer und darüber verlaufender blauer Schärpe mit einem Orden. In seiner rechten Hand hält er einen gezückten Degen nach oben und er blickt mit seinen blauen Augen voller Aufmerksamkeit aus dem Bild heraus. Repräsentative feine Darstellung, möglicherweise handelt es sich bei dem Dargestellten um einen der Söhne von Maria Theresia. REPRÄSENTATIVES PORTRAIT EINES ADLIGEN KINDES Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 98 x 73 cm. Ungerahmt. In einem Innenraum mit einem nach rechts im Deckenbereich gerafften dunkelbraunen Vorhang ein kleines Kind in einem großen goldenen Sessel. Es trägt ein elegantes Kleid mit Blumendekor und dazu passender Kopfbedeckung, erneut mit Blumendekor auf hellblauem Stoffgrund. Rechts von ihm, auf einem goldenen Hocker mit grünem Kissen und goldener Quaste, ein kleiner schwarz-weißer Hund, auf den das Kind mit seinem linken Zeigefinger verweist, während der Hund mit der anderen Hand des Kindes sanft gekrault wird. Der Dargestellte mit zartem weichem Gesicht, rötlichen Lippen und dunklen Augen, die leicht seitlich aus dem Bild herausblicken. Im Hintergrund rechts Aussicht auf einen hohen blauen Himmel mit grünen Ästen eines Baumes. Teils rest., kleine Retuschen. (1321078) (18) Anmerkung: Der Künstler war Hofmaler im Dienst Kaiser Karls VI. Unter der Regentschaft Maria Theresias ab 1740 erreichte er als bevorzugter Maler des Kaiserhauses den Höhepunkt seines Ruhmes. Er hatte einen großen Werkstattbetrieb, in dem zahlreiche Einzel- und Gruppenportraits der Kaiserin, ihrer Familie und ihres Hofstaates entstanden. Darunter sind mehrfach repräsentative Kinderbildnisse zu finden, darunter auch ein Kinderportrait Josef II von Österreich in ungarischer Tracht. Auch das hier gezeigte Bildnis könnte das Kind in ähnlicher ungarischer Tracht wiedergeben.

PORTRAIT KAISER FRANZ I Öl auf Leinwand. 90 x 70 cm. In vergoldetem Profilrahmen. Zusammen mit George Desmarées lernte Mytens bei seinem Vater in Stockholm, bevor es ihn nach Paris zog und nach Dresden, wo er für August den Starken arbeitete. Seine Portraitmalerei, die er bei Antonis van Dyck erlernte, war auch am Wiener Hof gefragt, wo er sich 1731 endgültig niederließ. Kaiser Franz I (1708-1765) wurde um 1745 auf diese Weise von Mytens portraitiert, wodurch sich ein Terminus post quem ergibt. Rest. (1320181) (13)
