Italian Baroque School, 17th Century - Oil on canvas. Signed lower right corner. Dimensions: 65 x 50 cm; 98 x 82 cm with frame. Formerly an important private collection. Genre scene with figures gathered against a rural architectural backdrop, enlivened by figures conversing, riding horses, and resting in the foreground. The composition combines landscape, architecture, and genre scenes with warm lighting and well-constructed spatial depth. Its subject matter and treatment link it to the Italian tradition of the 17th century. Documented in Rome at least from 1633, it belonged to the Bamboccianti or Bambochantes school, dedicated to creating small genre scenes that reflected the street life of Rome and its surroundings. A follower in this respect of the Dutch painter Pieter van Laer, some of whose paintings he copied, he was nevertheless, along with Michelangelo Cerquozzi, responsible for the evolution of the genre, emphasizing the development of narrative at the expense of landscape, as he primarily painted figures. He entered the Academy of St. Luke in Rome and, towards the end of his career, devoted himself to religious painting, leaving several works in Roman churches and participating in the decoration of the Quirinal Palace, where in 1656 he painted the fresco of the Crossing of the Red Sea. In 1658 he moved to Turin, where he worked for the Duke of Savoy and died in that city.

(Beveren-Waas, 1599 - Torino, 1663) Adorazione dei Magi Olio su tela, cm 72,3X59,7 Provenienza: Collezione Lord Belper Londra, Christie's, 30 luglio 1976, lotto 16 (come Jan Miel) Collezione privata Bibliografia: https://rkd.nl/imageslite/535931 (come Jan Miel) Il dipinto esprime i caratteri di stile del maestro, non solo per la sua aderenza ai modi della pittura romana, ma altresì per le stesure e la tipologia delle figure. Documentato a Roma dal 1636, ma è verosimile che vi sia giunto già nel 1633, Miel fa parte di quella generazione influenzata da Pieter van Laer, che diffuse la moda di descrivere la vita quotidiana della Città Eterna. Ma l'importanza della tela in esame è il suo discostarsi dal genere bambocciante, offrendoci una scena sacra in chiave caravaggesca e in cui possiamo apprezzare la cura con cui l'artista descrive i diversi protagonisti, le loro gestualità e, in particolare, l'ambientazione scenica in sintonia con le architetture di Viviano Codazzi. Questi indizi suggeriscono una esecuzione al quinto decennio, prima del trasferimento a Torino avvenuto nel 1658 su invito del duca Carlo Emanuele II, il quale aveva già commissionato a Miel la Madonna che presenta il Bambino a Sant'Antonio da Padova realizzata per il Duomo di Chieri (1651). Nel nostro caso la tela evidenzia un maggiore elaborazione scenica rispetto a quella appartenente alla Pinacoteca Nazionale di Palazzo Barberini. Bibliografia di riferimento: A. RUINENCAPRICCIO Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 91,5 x 126 cm. In vergoldetem blattwerkverzierten Rahmen. Links in das Bildfeld hineinführende Ansicht einer Reihung antiker Ruinen. Salucci pflegte sorgfältige Studien an Werken Viviano Codazzis, der führenden Persönlichkeit im Genre der Architektur-Capricci. Seine Figuren wurden meist von Jan Miel beigesteuert. Erst später hellt er seine Palette im Sinne Claude Lorraines merklich auf und entfernt sich dadurch von jeglicher Dramatisierung; und bereits hier ist eine Sfummato-Stimmung besonders im Hintergrund augenscheinlich. Miele fecit" in the plate. - Trimmed a few mm. outside the platemark. = On late 17th cent. laid paper. With the collector's mark of Pieter Willem van Doorne (1896-1971) (Lugt 4731) and the museum Boymans van Beuningen (doublure, Lugt 700a). Hollstein 12, only state; De Jongh/ Luijten, Mirror of Everyday Life 51 ("Old woman delousing a child", with illustration): "(...) Jan Miel, an Italianate painter from Flanders who spent much of his life in Rome and then Turin. (...) The unsaddled donkey in this attractive etching is part of a composition that can be described as typical of the subject matter favoured by the Bamboccianti, as the illustrators of everyday life in Italy were called. The centrepiece of the scene, which was executed around 1640, is a seated old woman with a pince-nez delousing a child's head. She would not have been to every-one's taste. A donkey was bad enough, but to depict someone killing lice (...) was considered deplorable by many of the artists' contemporaries. Several Italian writers and critics, at any rate, condemned this sort of scene out of hand. Giambattista Passeri speaks of 'abject and repulsive depictions' in his biography of Miel." Rare.

LANDSCHAFT AM FLUSS MIT FIGUREN Öl auf Leinwand. 47,5 x 59,5 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen. In südlicher Landschaft zahlreiche Figuren, wohl Reisende, in der Nähe eines Flusses, die glücklich über die Versorgung mit Wasser sind, das sie in Krügen neben sich stehen haben oder gerade tragen. Auffallend ein Reiter, der in jeder seiner hochgehaltenen Hände einen Wasserkrug hat, unds diese den Wartenden bringt. Im Vordergrund ist ein Paar dabei, Wasser aus großen Krügen in kleinere, verschließbare Flaschen umzufüllen. Lediglich ein Soldat mit Hellebarde und gestreifter Uniform, die an einen Gardisten des Papstes erinnert, scheint noch kein Wasser erhalten zu haben. Rechts ist zudem ein Ordensbruder im Gespräch mit zwei Kavalieren, der wohl für die Wasserversorgung verantwortlich ist, was das Gemälde als historische Darstellung deuten lässt. (1381914) (18)

Il dipinto esprime indubbiamente i caratteri tipici del maestro, non solo per la sua aderenza ai modi dei bamboccianti, ma altresì per la stesura e le tipologie compositive della sua produzione. Miel è documentato a Roma dal 1636, ma è verosimile che vi sia giunto già nel 1633, facendo parte di quella generazione influenzata da Pieter van Laer, che diffuse la moda di descrivere la vita quotidiana della Città Eterna. La tela consente d'apprezzare la cura con cui l'artista descrive i diversi protagonisti, le loro gestualità e indumenti, attenzione che indica una visione e uno studio dal vero della vita quotidiana, letta e interpretata senza filtri letterari ma con spiccato naturalismo, sincero e appassionato, impossibile da archiviare sbrigativamente nell'ambito dell'aneddotica o della cronaca spicciola, ma da leggere quale fenomeno denso di motivazioni culturali. L'immagine della finestra aperta adottato da Giuliano Briganti è quindi la via critica migliore per comprendere questo particolare filone della pittura d'età barocca, il cui il nominativo di bambocciante, come rimarca lo studioso, può risultare un diminutivo grottesco e ingiusto da non tenere in simpatia. Alla fine del 1658 il Miel si trasferirà a Torino su invito del duca Carlo Emanuele II, ma la sua arte era già nota in Piemonte sin dal 1651, grazie alla Madonna che presenta il Bambino a Sant'Antonio da Padova realizzata per il Duomo di Chieri. (1599 Beveren - 1663 Turin) attr.; Ländliches Fest vor einem Wirtshaus In Motiv, Stil und Kolorit für Miels "Bambocciade"-Gemälde typisches Werk mit einer lebensnah geschilderten, vielfigurigen Volksfestszene vor einer Architekturstaffage. Erzählerisch schildert Miel ausgelassene Tänzer, zechende und musizierende Figuren. Miel, der seine künstlerische Ausbildung wohl in Antwerpen erhielt, war 1633/36-1658 in Rom ansässig, wo er Mitglied der "Bentvueghels" war. Zugleich gehörte er zum Kreis der sog. von Pieter van Laer beeinflussten Genremaler der sog. "Bamboccianti", die mit Vorliebe Szenen schilderten, welche die einfache Bevölkerung in Rom und in der ländlichen Umgebung schilderten. Miel wurde zu einer bedeutenden Kraft im Zuge der Entwicklung dieser neuen Tradition in Rom und erwarb sich auch allgemein großes Ansehen. 1648 nahm man Miel als ersten nordischen Künstler in die angesehene Vereinigung Accademia di San Luca auf, 1650 in die Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon. 1658 berief ihn Karl Emanuel II. Herzog von Savoyen an den Hof nach Turin. Werke Miels befinden sich u. a. in der Eremitage, im Louvre und im Prado. Öl/Lwd., doubl.; 57 cm x 85 cm. Rahmen.
