      LLOYD MIFFLIN (1826-1921): SCHUYKILL Oil on canvas, unsigned, lined, with label from James S. Earle & Sons and Earles' Galleries, Philadelphia. 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 in., 14 x 18 in. (frame). Note: The old paper label on the back of the frame is from Earles' Galleries, Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. Earles' Galleries was a prominent framer and art gallery in the second half of the 19th Century. It was here that Thomas Eakins had his only solo exhibition.

      Two Lloyd Mifflin Watercolor on Paper Paintings of the Rhine Valley, Germany. Lloyd Mifflin, a poet and painter, was born in 1846 in Columbia, Pennsylvania. Mifflin received art instruction first from his father and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He then studied in Germany and became a talented painter, and later in life he developed into a good photographer. Mifflin believed that paint fumes damaged his health, causing him to stop painting and concentrate on writing poetry, specifically sonnets. He eventually published over 500 sonnets. Mifflin died in 1921. Unframed, image size 5" x 8". Condition: Very good. (500-1000)
