Duplessis Peintre du Roi / Gravé par S. C. Miger". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "CHRISTOPHER GLUCK De l'art d'aller au coeur par des accords touchants, Nul, ainsi mieux que lui, ne montre la puissance, Et de tous nos rivaux c'est le seul dont les chants Ayent charmé son pay: l'Italie et la France.". Date: Description: The artwork shows a portrait of Christoph Willibald Gluck, a well-known composer of the 18th century. He is depicted in an oval medallion set into a rectangular plinth. Gluck wears a wig and is depicted in courtly dress, consisting of a coat and a scarf. His facial expression is serious and dignified, his gaze directed slightly to the right. Decorative laurel branches are arranged around the medallion, alluding to his artistic successes. The composition is symmetrical and characterised by clear lines. The light falls from the left, creating subtle shading on the face and clothing. Gluck's name and a quotation are engraved below the medallion. Person: Depicted: Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714 Erasbach - 1787 Vienna) German composer of the Viennese Classical period. He reformed opera by emphasising dramatic expression over virtuosity. Works such as Orfeo ed Euridice (1762) and Alceste influenced Mozart and Wagner. Gluck worked in Vienna, Paris and Italy.
