    Jun. 19, 2026

Two color woodcuts by Migita Toshihide from the series Bijin jûnisô

    Est: €180 - €400

Two color woodcuts by Migita Toshihide from the series Bijin jûnisô Japan, Meiji period (1863-1925). Color woodcut on Washi (Japanese paper). Dimensions: 24.6 × 35.3 cm and 35.1 × 24.4 cm. Both sheets are loose. Series: Bijin jûnisô. Title: Fumizuki (July) / Shimotsuki (November). Signed: Toshihide. Seal: Gosai. Publisher: Akiyama Buemon. Dated: 1901. Condition: Very well preserved; slightly soiled and browned. - Another example is in the British Museum. Migita Toshihide (1863-1925) was a versatile woodcut artist of the Meiji period, known for Bijin-ga, war depictions, and book illustrations. As a student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, he combined a finely elaborated drawing technique with a modern sensibility. His print Bijin jûnisô ("Twelve Aspects of Beautiful Women") belongs to a series depicting elegant women associated with the months of the year. These color woodcuts typically portray seasonal motifs – such as fireflies or shuttlecocks – along with graceful female figures, reflecting both poetic traditions and the aesthetics of the Meiji period.

  • Migita Toshihide (1863-1925) Japanese, Woodblock Print
    Apr. 19, 2026

Migita Toshihide (1863-1925) Japanese, Woodblock Print

    Est: $200 - $400

Migita Toshihide (1863-1925) Japanese, Woodblock Print. This piece is the rightmost part of a triptych entitled "Kimura Matazo defeats Shimada Gon'emon at the battle of Anegawa." It depicts a warrior on horseback in front of a mountain next to a lake. A stylish cartouche below contains printing information in red-hued kanji. This is a counterpart to another piece in the auction by the same artist, the first two parts of the triptych. The piece comes with a backing sheet and matting that bears repeating floral patterns geometrically arranged.  Overall Size: 19 1/4 x 14 3/4 in.  Sight Size: 13 3/4 x 9 in.  Migita Toshihide was born on August 1st, 1863 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan and apprenticed to Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, creating traditional ukiyo-e prints. He was so prolific that he was known as Oju Toshihide or sometimes simply Toshihide, and after studying with Kinisawa Shimburō who had traveled to Britain to train in Western styles his own work began to reflect this influence as well. His kabuki actor (yakusha-e) portraits were well known in his lifetime, and starting in 1877 his work was published in newspapers and magazines as he began to create war prints. His early triptychs depicted famous early battles and samurai scenes, but his later pieces are considered important historical documents as he strove to cover Japan’s participation in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), reflecting both a change in fashion and in stylistic depiction of bloodshed, nationalism, and the stark reality of their consequences. He died on February 4th, 1925, and is considered a major influence on shifting artistic norms at the end of the Meiji era.
