JOSE MARIA MIJARES (Havana, 1921-2004). Untitled, 1972. Oil on canvas. Attached certificate issued by Mrs. María A. Cabrera (widow of the artist). Provenance: Mrs. María A. Cabrera (widow of the artist). Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 60 x 81 cm; 89 x 108 cm (frame). In 1972, José María Mijares was in a moment of consolidation in his artistic career in exile, after having left Cuba in 1968. Based in Miami, his work from this period reflects a profound reflection on the balance between order and lyricism, the result of a plastic search sustained over decades. From the aesthetic point of view, Mijares developed a pictorial language fully identified with lyrical geometric abstraction, where orthogonal structures, chromatic planes and tonal modulations became fundamental elements of his expression. His painting of these years is distinguished by a compositional rigor close to constructivism, but always tinged by a Caribbean chromatic sensibility and a clear poetic vocation. Geometry, far from being cold or purely rational, in Mijares acquires a meditative character, full of rhythm, light and inner vibration, as can be seen in this work. Mijares, considered one of the great 20th century Cuban and Latin American artists, studied at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he taught. Among his teachers were Romanach, Menocal, Valderrama, Ramon Loy, Caravia and others. It was Mijares himself who recognized that one of his most influential teachers was Ponce, who helped him develop his own style of expression. He was a member of the group Diez Pintores Concretos. Between 1968 and 1973 he was a member of Grupo Gala in Miami, where he settled at the age of 47. He directed Alacrán Azul magazine in Miami. He held his first exhibition at the Havana Lyceum (1947). In the eighties he exhibited in Coral Gables, Florida, where he reiterated his presence. In 1994 the Cuban Museum of Art and Culture of Miami dedicated a retrospective to him. Also the Alfredo Martinez Gallery of Coral Gables would organize an ontological one in 1996. As for group exhibitions, it is worth mentioning his participation in the Venice Biennial of 1952. He is represented at the Cintas Foundation in New York, the Loewe Art Museum, Florida; the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Mijares' well-deserved recognition came mainly from knowing how to harmonize his universal vocation with the search for an autochthonous Cuban language. His works are characterized by illustrating a personal, expressive artistic style, with a special poetics that values at the same time the versatility of his plastic resources and an exquisite sensitivity in handling different themes. Sometimes starting from a colorful postcubism through which he practically enters into abstraction but without losing the referential thread. The Florida International University awarded Mijares an honorary doctorate in fine arts in December 2001. In 2002, he opened the Mijares Gallery in Coral Gables, where his latest works were exhibited. Attached certificate issued by Mrs. María A. Cabrera (widow of the artist).

    Est: €7,000 - €8,000

JOSÉ MIJARES (Havana, 1921 - 2004) "Concrete", 1958. Mixed media on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Attached certificate issued by María Antonia Cabrera de Mijares, widow of the artist. Provenance: collection of editor of Bohemia, iconic Cuban cultural magazine. Measurements: 130 x 60 cm. Piece of great relevance in the development of geometric abstraction in Cuba, made in 1958, at a key moment of consolidation of concrete language in Latin America. The work displays a rigorously structured composition by means of a grid of white lines that articulate the space in interrelated geometric planes. On this framework, the artist introduces chromatic hallmarks that intensify the visual tension and compositional rhythm. The verticality of the format, together with the constructive solidity of the whole, gives the painting a marked architectural character, a reflection of Mijares' interest in spatial organization and formal synthesis. This approach places the work in full harmony with the international trends of concrete art, while linking it to the Cuban context of aesthetic renovation in the late 1950s. A member of the Diez Pintores Concretos group, Mijares actively participated in the introduction and consolidation of abstraction in Cuba. In 1952 he took part in the Venice Biennial, consolidating his international projection. At the end of the sixties he settled in Miami, where he continued his artistic and exhibition activity, forming part of the GALA Group and developing an important cultural work. His work has been the subject of retrospective exhibitions and is represented in collections and institutions such as the Cintas Foundation (New York), the Lowe Art Museum (Florida), the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) and the Museum of Latin American Art in Washington, among others. His career was recognized with an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from Florida International University.

    Est: €6,000 - €7,000

JOSE MARIA MIJARES (Havana, 1921-2004). "Head", c. 1980. Oil on canvas. Attached certificate issued by Mrs. María A. Cabrera (widow of Mijares). Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 122 x 90 cm; 150 x 118 cm (frame). This painting evidences the maturity of the artist in his post-exile stage, when his work reached a remarkable compositional freedom without renouncing formal rigor. It shows Mijares' aspiration to build a balanced art between emotion and reason, between the memory of the Cuban environment and the universality of abstract language. Mijares articulates a dynamic and structured composition, dominated by a large circular shape in blue tones that seems to expand from the center to the edges of the canvas. The black lines, with a firm and continuous stroke, delimit planes of color that intertwine like cells or gears, generating an internal movement that simultaneously suggests tension and harmony. The precision of the geometric forms is combined with an almost biomorphic expressiveness, evidencing the artist's interest in reconciling rational order with the freedom of plastic gesture. Color plays an essential role: deep blues and violets, modulated with soft gradations, establish a visual dialogue with yellow, red and turquoise accents, which bring vibration and contrast. This palette reveals the Caribbean imprint of Mijares, who manages to translate tropical luminosity into an abstract language of universal projection. Mijares, considered one of the great 20th century Cuban and Latin American artists, studied at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he taught. Among his teachers were Romanach, Menocal, Valderrama, Ramon Loy, Caravia and others. Est: €5,000 - €6,000

JOSÉ MARÍA MIJARES (Havana, 1921-2004). Untitled. Mixed media on paper. Signed. It presents light damages in the margins. Measurements: 41 x 29 cm; 72 x 60 cm (frame). Mijares' artistic production went through different stages, one of the most interesting being his incursion into a post-cubism revisited from an intermediate place between figuration and abstraction. In the painting shown here, the author endows his synthetic vision of forms and landscapes with exceptional color. The work offers a new vitalistic aesthetic that merges with a technique close to geometric abstraction of playful character and endowed with a great power of evocation. Mijares studied at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he taught. He was a member of the group Diez Pintores Concretos. Between 1968 and 1973 he was a member of the Gala Group in Miami, where he settled at the age of 47. He directed the magazine Alacrán Azul in Miami. He is represented at the Cintas Foundation in New York, the Lowe Art Museum, Florida; the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Mijares' well-deserved recognition came above all for knowing how to harmonize his universal vocation with the search for an autochthonous Cuban language. In this composition, he starts from a colorist postcubism through which he practically enters abstraction, but without losing the referential thread. A preened female figure is still recognizable, as in his "habaneras", but she has been stripped of personal features, transforming her body into a set of gears that animate a beautiful and elegant automaton.
