Oil on canvas, relined. Signed and indistinctly dated.

        Est: €45,000 - €50,000

JOHANNES MYTENS OR JAN MIJTENS (Holland, c.1614-1670). "The Rape of Europa. Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, portrayed as the Goddess Europa. Oil on canvas. Re-tinted. Frame from the 19th century. Measurements: 132 x 185,5 cm. The piece has restorations. Jan Mytens is one of the most important Dutch painters of the time and he specialised in the portrait of personalities and aristocrats, both in his country and in England. In the present work he depicts Margaret Cavendish as the Goddess Europa following the mythological story of the Rape of Europa by Zeus transformed into a Bull. The theme depicted here is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book II): Europa was the beautiful daughter of the king of Tyre. Zeus fell in love with her beauty when she was walking on the beach, so he decided to metamorphose into a bull, the young girl's favourite animal. Europa began to caress the animal until she was on his back. At that moment Zeus threw himself into the sea. To prevent her from falling, the young woman held on to the horns and the animal flew away from the shore until it reached Crete. Mytens's treatment of the subject is so different from that of Rubens and Rembrandt, who differed from each other at the same time. Mytens focuses on the moment of complete confidence of the lady mounted on Zeus, before he sets off on the run. Rubens, on the other hand (following Titian), was interested in the convulsion of the female body, attached to the bull only by the horn. Rembrandt, on the other hand, depicted the actual abduction, the escape by sea. Mytens's composition is peaceful, despite the dense, silver-golden sky that heralds the abduction. This allows him to give priority to the description of the velvety smooth clothes, the jewels reflecting the cold light that bathes the atmosphere, the Ivorian flesh tones... The skilful work of glazes on the scarf fluttering in the wind stands out. The animal gaze is full of radiance, in contrast to his woolly body. Eros, foreshortened, approaches with his arrow, and three cherubs lead Zeus. The volumetric work of the bodies, modelled by light and colour, and the sensual plasticity of qualities and atmospheres are outstanding. He is an important exponent of the Dutch Baroque, which in turn is impregnated with Flemish plastic art. Johannes Mytens was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. He was born in The Hague. According to Houbraken, he was a pupil of Anthony van Opstal and later of Nicolas van der Horst. His two uncles Isaac Mijtens and Daniël Mijtens were painters, and his son Cornelis became an engraver. Mytens became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in The Hague in 1642 and helped establish the Painting Guild. He painted for Dutch royalty and specialised in portraits, genre paintings and historical allegories. His pupils were Nicolaes Lissant, Gerard de Nijst, Adriaen Stalpert van der Wiele, Pouels van de Velde, Andries Thijsz. de Wit, and Urbanus Talibert van Yperen. Died in The Hague. Margaret Cavendish (1623-1673), Duchess of Newcastle, was an English aristocrat, philosopher, poet, scientist, playwright and fiction writer active in the 17th century. She published under her own name at a time when most women published anonymously. Her writings cover a wide range of issues including gender, power, education, scientific method and philosophy. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Royal Society of London in 1667. She was associated with the most important scholars of her time such as Thomas Hobbes, René Descartes and Robert Boyle among many others. She was considered an eccentric for her peculiar way of behaving and dressing outside of convention. She is also considered a pioneering advocate for animals, opposing their use in laboratory tests.

      • Jan Mijtens, Portrait of Albertine Agnes of Orange-Nassau, Princess of Nassau-Diez, as Diana
        May. 30, 2020

Jan Mijtens, Portrait of Albertine Agnes of Orange-Nassau, Princess of Nassau-Diez, as Diana

        Est: €18,000 - €24,000

Albertine Agnes was born in The Hague in 1634 as the daughter of Prince Frederick Henry of Orange (1584-1647), governor of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders and Overijssel, and his wife Amalie Countess of Solms-Braunfels. In 1652 she married her cousin Count Wilhelm Friedrich of Nassau-Diez, the governor of the northern provinces of Friesland, Drenthe and Groningen, who was more than twenty years her senior. Through her, the Nassau-Diez line won the claim to the inheritance of the older House of Orange, and her grandson Johann Wilhelm Friso became the founder of the younger House of Orange, from which the present Dutch royal family also originates, even after Wilhelm III died childless in 1702. Together with her three sisters Luise Henriette, Electoress of Brandenburg, Henriette Katharina, Princess of Anhalt-Dessau, and Maria, Countess Palatine of Simmern, Albertine Agnes is probably one of the most portrayed women of her time. Among the artists who painted her were Gerard van Honthorst, Caspar Netscher, Abraham van den Tempel and especially Jan Mijtens, to whom she owed a considerable sum of money for various commissions upon her death. Jan Mijtens also created the most famous depiction of Albertine Agnes, the group portrait of the "Four Sisters of the House of Orange Nassau", which was painted on the occasion of the wedding of the youngest princess in Cleves in 1666 and depicts the four sisters in a landscape below the Schwanenburg (today on loan from the Anhalt Picture Gallery Dessau in Mosigkau Palace). The present portrait was also painted by Jan Mijtens, the leading portraitist in The Hague in the mid-17th century. It shows the young Princess of Nassau-Diez alone in three-quarter length. She wears a yellow silk gown with a transparent scarf and fine pearl jewellery. Attributes of the hunt, such as a spear and two greyhounds, identify the representation as a "portrait historié". This special form of portrait allows the sitters to portray mythological or, less frequently, biblical or literary characters through the use of attributes and costumes. This style of portrait enjoyed particular popularity in the 17th century, especially in France and the northern Netherlands, and was also frequently taken up by Mijtens. Albertine Agnes von Nassau-Diez is here portrayed as Diana, goddess of the hunt. In addition to the attributes mentioned above, the "pteryges", a fringe of fabric strips that falls from the sitter's waist over her skirt, also indicate that this work is intended to represent a classical or mythological character. Several pentimenti, most clearly visible on the sitter's left hand, suggest that our painting is the first version of this type of portrait. Alexandra Nina Bauer lists two almost identical versions in her catalogue raisonné (loc. cit., p. 194, no. 54a and 54 b), one of which is in the Siegerland-Museum in Siegen. We would like to thank Dr. Alexandra Nina Bauer for confirming this work's authenticity on the basis of digital photographs. .

        May. 30, 2020

Jan Mijtens, The Crowning of Mirtillo

        Est: €80,000 - €90,000

This piece by Jan Mijtens is one of his largest known works, and one of the rarest motifs by this artist. It reflects the spirit of a movement which began in Italy in the late 16th century but had its roots in the poetry of antiquity. Authors such as Horace and Vergil were the first to introduce bucolic motifs into literature. The pastoral genre is an idealisation of nature and life in the countryside as a source of happiness, peace, and harmony in the mythical Arcadia. The most important expression of this genre in the 16th century was the villa architecture of the Veneto and its decorative fresco cycles, but there were also numerous other works of literature and the pictorial arts. Giovanni Battista Guarini's play “Il Pastor Fido” was first performed in Venice in 1590 but it was subsequently published in numerous later editions and even translated into Dutch. Before Mijten's version, the story of Amarillys and Mirtillo had already been depicted in large format compositions by artists such as Anthony van Dyck, Abraham Bloemaert and Ferdinand Bol. They usually chose the scene of the crowning of Mirtillo dressed as a woman. He was the winner of a kissing game which began the love story between Amaryllis and Mirtillo which the work describes. A. N. Bauer (op. cit) dates the present work to the 1660s. It was created at the zenith of Mijtens' artistic career at a time when he was one of the most sought-after and productive artists in The Hague. Mijtens only painted three pastorals. In terms of composition, they are all closely related to his family portraits, in which - like the present work - he also places his groups of figures on either side of a central pathway through the landscape that leads the viewer's gaze into the distance.

Also the theme of the hunt was not strange to Mijttens and his surroundings (compare for example with a portrait of most probably Mary of Nassau, link).  The reverse with an old auction label.

(1211371) (13) Flemish painter of the 17th Century/  circle of Jan Mytens, ca. 1614 – 1670 THE RAPE OF EUROPE Oil on canvas. 133.5 x 184.5 cm. Unframed.

Estimation 40 000 - 60 000 €

Signed and dated upper right: A:o 1662. JANMijtens F: (JANM joined) Jan Mijtens was one of the leading portrait painters in The Hague in the 17th century. He was born into a large family of painters, which included his uncle Daniel Mijtens the Elder. Jan was probably taught under Daniel Mijtens as well as another uncle before being accepted as a master by the guild of Saint Luke in The Hague in 1639. Alongside genre and history paintings, Mijtens is most well known for his individual and group portraits. His patrons included the family of the Stadtholder and aristocracy in The Hague, as well as foreign rulers such as Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg, for whom Mijtens painted a large family portrait for Oranienburg palace. The present work shows an unknown young lady, presumably from the courtly circle at The Hague. She is shown dressed in a vividly coloured, shimmering blue silk gown and opulent pearl jewellery, gazing out confidently towards the viewer. She rests her left arm upon a rocky outcrop whilst her right hand clasps a pink flower in a graceful gesture. This gift for capturing elegance, combined with his technical prowess as a painter, made Jan Mijtens one of the most popular portrait artists of his era.

Jan Mytens was the leading portraitist of Dutch nobility and patricians in The Hague. This high quality portrait of a lady is an early work by the artist. Verso, it bears an inscription stating that it was painted in 1645 and that the sitter is 56. Because of the date, the size and the composition, the present portrait is the likely counterpart to a portrait of a man with gloves that is monogrammed and dated 1645 (whereabouts unknown, RKD IB no. 106591). Alexandra Bauer has confirmed the authenticity of the painting and considers it to be the earliest female portrait by Jan Mytens.
