When the painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy, John Ruskin proclaimed that 'This picture is as brilliant in invention as consummate in executive power... [it] will rank in future among the world's best masterpieces' (John Ruskin, 'Academy Notes, 1856' in The Works of John Ruskin, 1903, p. 56).In a letter dated 14 April 1856 to William Bell Scott, William Michael Rossetti wrote 'He [Millais] means now to do ... a cliff and sea-shore picture by night, with the rather absurd incident of a somnambulist girl followed by her father with a lantern. Doubtless he will make something strange and impressive out of it; but meaning is not apparent' (Roger W. Peattie (ed.), Selected Letters of William Michael Rossetti, 1990, p. 65). While the study is dated '1861', evidently the subject of somnambulism was on Millais' mind five years earlier. It is therefore possible that Millais began the sleepwalking scene on the reverse of the study of Effie in 1856, using pencil to complete the girl's head and to roughly describe the setting and nightgown. He may then have returned to reinforce the work in brown ink at the later date. Indeed, the subject is brought to fruition in Millais' The Somnambulist of 1871, which shares some compositional similarities with the present drawing, albeit the sleepwalker becomes a young woman. We are grateful to Malcolm Warner for his assistance in cataloguing this work.

Sir John Everett Millais, PRA, British 1829-1896- Study for 'The Sound of Many Waters'; pencil, pen, and black ink heightened with white and scratching out on paper, with a small pencil sketch of trees verso, 24 x 17.2 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is likely a preparatory sketch for a landscape painted by Millais in 1876 bearing the same title, although varying somewhat in composition. The larger painting was exhibited at London's Royal Academy in 1877 and is now in the collection of the National Trust for Scotland at Fyvie Castle [84.112.1]. This depicts the Rumbling Bridge Falls near Dunkeld, Perthshire, and is one of a number of atmospheric Scottish landscapes Millais completed over the course of the 1870s, the best-known of which is probably his striking 'Chill October', now in the collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Between 1870-1892 Millais painted twenty-one landscape scenes, which have been described as ‘the great dark horses of his career’. The finished painting was conceived 'en plein air by Millais' and he had a wooden hut, constructed by a local carpenter, to shelter him and his large canvas from the elements. During the process, Millais was apparently pestered by a local 'madman' who 'preached, barefooted, to the rocks and trees all day' until he was removed by the police. At another point his hut was smashed on the rocks although the painting was rescued and taken to a local cottage. The finished work, however, was described by Rossetti as 'the finest landscape yet exhibited by Mr. Millais.' The approach of the present work, particularly in its distinctive hatching, is evident in other works by Millais, including his illustration which sold at Bonhams, London, on 31 January 2024, lot 113 (£3,584), and his 'The auctioneer', which sold at Christie's, London, on 12 December 2019, lot 101 (£3,750).

Original pencil drawing by well known English artist Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896). Signed and dated 1850 lower right. Provenance: private art collector estate Denver, Colorado. Size: Framed: 15" x 17"; Unframed: 8 1/2" x 10 1/4". John Millais was born into an affluent middle class family in Southampton, England. He became the youngest pupil ever at the Royal Academy Schools when he arrived there at the age of eleven and he was the youngest to complete the course five years later. Technically he was extremely competent and was the star pupil, but he was criticized for lacking a certain breadth of imagination and vision, which is ironic given his future as a Pre-Raphaelite. John Millais was a member of the original group of Pre-Raphaelites; he and the poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti were among the youngest members since they were barely out of their teens. Although he was only twenty-three, he had to leave the Brotherhood to make more money to support a rapidly increasing family. His painting Ophelia, was considered the masterpiece of the movement. John Ruskin, art writer and critic and sometime painter, came out for the Brotherhood and became friends with Millais. Ruskin was married to a beautiful and socially ambitious woman, Euphemia Gray. Euphemia and Millais fell in love and after a sensationally publicized divorce, married. For the 1851 Royal Academy Exhibition Millais produced three paintings, one of which proved a great success and laid the foundation for his election to become an Associate of the Academy in November 1853, at age twenty-four, the earliest possible age. Having started out as a young firebrand, Millais became a stalwart establishment figure, even becoming a baronet, always faithful to the dictates of the Royal Academy. He regularly showed at Academy exhibitions and became so influential there that he was made President in 1896, the same year that he died. Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog. Sir John Everett Millais England, (1829-1896) Crossing the Brook oil on canvas As a child, Millais displayed a precocious artistic talent, and he became the youngest artist ever admitted to the Royal Academy Schools where he was known to his fellow students as ‘the Child.' He became a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and he was internationally renowned during his lifetime. His career culminated in his election as President of the Royal Academy in 1896. This is a charming picture painted of a mother and child, both barefoot walking along a long dirt path and about to cross a babbling brook. They are wearing classic 19th c. attire, and the mom is carrying a basket that is probably filled with their lunch. The landscape is hilly and barren. Signed lower left. Framed in a beautiful 19th c. carved and painted wooden frame.

Sir John Everett Millais, Bt., PRA, RWS (British, 1829-1886) An historically important drawing of the artist and his wife Effie as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, inscribed lower edge "EVER & EFRI REX" and extensively inscribed on the reverse, pen and brown ink, circular 4in. (10.2cm.) diameter; mounted with the Great Exhibition bronze medal of 1851 of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, designed by William Wyon, and from which Millais derived the image. * Provenance: Christie's, London 27th February 2007, 27, £9,000; Private collection, Jersey. ** It is thought that the drawing was made around the time of Millais' marriage on 3rd July 1855 to Euphemia, known as Effie, who had previously been married to the art critic John Ruskin. Millais and Effie had fallen in love while holidaying in Scotland with Ruskin in 1853 and she successfully had her marriage annulled on the grounds of non consummation. This intensely private and sensitive matter was reported in detail by the press eager to satisfy the public's curiosity. To escape the gossip surrounding their marriage Millais and Effie spent the first six years of their marriage in Scotland. Effie often appeared in Millais' paintings, most famously in The Order of Release (Tate Britain) which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853. Although born in Southampton, Millais spent his childhood in Jersey and would always describe himself as a Jerseyman.
