Richard Emil Miller Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Porträtmaler, Painter, Landscape painter, Portrait painter, Wall painter, Illustrator, b. 1875 - d. 1943

(born 22 March 1875 St. Louis, Missouri; died 1943) American painter. Richard Emil Miller, also known as Richard Edward Miller, was a member of the Giverny Group, the second generation of American Impressionists to work in France during the early twentieth century. Miller started his artist training at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. He received a scholarship from the school to study in France; he enrolled at Julians from 1898 to 1901. Early in his career Miller was an academic artist painting in the Realist style. His works featured a muted palette with dark colors. He achieved considerable success in France early on when one of his portraits was accepted into the Paris Salon. In 1905 he traveled to Giverny, where his friend and fellow artist Frederick Carl Frieseke leased a house next to Claude Monet. It was here that Monet heavily influenced Miller’s style. Miller started to paint exterior scenes at Giverny with looser brushstrokes and a brighter, more luminous palette. In 1906 he started teaching the students of Mary C. Wheeler, who ran an art school for women based in Providence, Rhode Island. Each summer Wheeler would rent a house in Giverny for her and her pupils where they would study for the season. In 1907 Miller married one of Wheeler’s students, Harriette Adams, and they had one child together in 1909. Miller remained in France for fifteen years until he returned to the United States in 1914, however not before selling four of his paintings to the French government, receiving a gold medal from the Paris Salon and being made knight of the French Legion of Honor. In 1915 he taught with Guy Rose at the Pasadena Stickney School of Art in California and in 1918 he co-founded with Edmund Greacen the Provincetown Artists Colony in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he remained until his death.

Provenance: Sold: Bayeux Auction House, Bayeux, France, July 14, 1991, Lot 42 Estate of John F. Norwood, St. Louis, Missouri Sold: Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Chicago, September 25, 2015, Lot 245 Acquired at the above sale by the present owner Exhibited: New York, The Jordan-Volpe Gallery, A Bright Oasis: The Paintings of Richard E. Miller, April 25 - June 6, 1997 Literature: Marie Louise Kane, A Bright Oasis: The Paintings of Richard E. Miller, 1997, no. 30, pl. 30, pp. 113; 130, illus. Recognized as one of the leading members of the American art colony in Giverny, France, Richard Edward Miller garnered widespread acclaim for his depictions of female figures in sunlit interiors. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Miller traveled to Paris in 1899 where he enrolled at the Académie Julian. He remained in Paris and found success through regular exhibitions at the Paris Salon, as well as numerous locations abroad, including the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York and the Venice Biennale. By 1907, the artist was summering in Giverny, where his association with fellow American artists, including Frederick Carl Frieseke, Guy Rose, and Louis Ritman, lightened his palette and his aesthetic became distinguished by an emphasis on pattern, line, and bold color contrasts. Miller spent the summers of 1912 and 1913 in St. Jean du Doigt, a small coastal town in Brittany, France. Given its stylistic similarity to other paintings from this time, it may be surmised that The Necklace (La Femme au Collier) was painted during one of these trips. Marie Louise Kane writes, "A series of women-in-interiors painted around 1913…are among Miller's most inventive works. By placing his figures indoors in front of windows overlooking gardens, as he increasingly did, Miller could combine the play of natural light with complex patterns created by man-made objects, like shutters, blinds, wicker chairs, striped and tiered fabrics, and French doors…Using the same model, costume, setting, accessories and palette, Miller painted three closely-related versions of the same theme…The degree to which Miller succeeded in establishing a quiet, meditative mood amidst the profusion of pattern and color in these paintings is another measure of his skill." (Mary Louise Kane, A Bright Oasis, The Paintings of Richard Edward Miller, New York, 1997, p. 41) In The Necklace (La Femme au Collier), patterns dominate. The play of the wicker armchair’s diamond design contrasts against the woman’s striped dress and the fabric draped on a table, which in turn alternates against the horizontal blinds and vertical balcony railing. Quick, short brushstrokes delineate these varying lines and are juxtaposed against the smooth application of paint that describes the woman’s face, décolletage, and hands. The sitter appears tranquil as she contemplates a length of green beads, unaware of the riot of pattern and color within her chamber and outside her window in the garden. The cool palette of green and purple, a favorite of the artist’s, likewise produces a sense of calm, and further distinguishes the interior from the sunlit garden. With its strong sense of design and color contrast, this work exemplifies Miller’s belief that "art's mission is not literary, the telling of a story, but decorative, the conveying of a pleasant optical sensation." (cited in Michael David Zellman, editor, American Art Analog, New York, 1986, p. 764)

Miller studied at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts in Washington in the 1890s. A scholarship in 1899 enabled him to travel to Paris, where he enrolled at the Académie Julian and studied under French artists Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens. During his fifteen-year stay in Paris he became an accomplished painter of young women in informal domestic settings. Miller spent his summers in Giverny with other American artists such as Frederick Carl Frieseke who rented a house adjacent to Monet’s property. He gave summer lessons there to American students. Miller’s consistently preferred subject matter was the female figure, most often placed in an intimate domestic setting. He painted large canvases for selling at exhibitions as well as smaller and more intimate works such as the present lot. Bedtime routine was one of the three paintings exhibited at the Seventh International Exhibition in Venice in 1907.

Richard MILLER 1875-1943 Paysage de Hollande - circa 1903 Huile sur toile Signée en bas à gauche "Miller" h: 60 w: 73 cm Commentaire : Un certificat de Madame Marie Louise Kane sera remis à l'acquéreur. Oil on canvas ; signed lower left "In my opinion this Dutch scene depicting two windmills at the edge of a river amidst some red-roofed houses, was most probably painted in Veere, Holland. The windmill style and the houses are characteristic of Veere, in the southwest of the Netherlands. The faintly rendered spire in the distance is the distinctive bell tower of Veere's town hall. Miller spent the summer of 1903 in Veere to teach female students from the Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island. The school's founder, Mary Colman Wheeler, was a distinguished educator who regularly took students to Europe for art instruction. Miller met his future wife in this group, marrying her in 1907. Miller painted a number of these Dutch landscapes with windmills on waterways. They are painted in similar fashion, influenced by Tonalist and Hague School elements which, still very popular, characterized Miller's earliest work. Gray, cloud-filled skies, dank wharves and worn old fishing boats evoke the moist atmosphere and age-old way of life in the lowlands. The touches of red in the paintings serve to enliven these scenes. The late nineteenth-century Italian art collector Luigi Frugone had several Miller paintings, including one depicting the same two windmills - Mulino a vento. This painting is in the Frugone Collection, Museum of the City of Genoa. A similar painting appeared at auction in 1997 - Landscape with Windmill (Sotheby's Arcade sale, New York, September 30, 1997, ot 138). In 1910, close to forty paintings by Miller were exhibited in four South American cities. Several of these paintings were Dutch landscapes with windmills and some were acquired by collectors there. While Miller went on to become best known for his colorful, impressionist paintings of comely women in interiors and gardens, he returned to painting harbor scenes when he finally settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1918. These paintings, executed with the gray tonalities of his earlier Dutch works, were primarily painted in the 1920s and 30s."

Oil on canvas ; signed lower right "I would date this painting ca. 1905-1908. It was painted in Paris, where Miller had a studio from 1899 to 1914. The subject, a young, well-dressed woman in an interior, was one Miller painted repeatedly, with many variations. The dark tonality and somber colors are characteristic of Miller's early ventures into the subject. In 1903 Miller traveled to Veere, Holland with a class of students. A painting from that trip, dated 1903 - Woman Sewing (Sotheby's New York sale, March 13, 2002, Lot 21) - is an early example of the composition that Miller hued to in many subsequent works (including yours) - i.e. a woman seated in profile, close to the picture plane, with a dresser behind her upon which are a number of still life objects. Another example is the painting Miller exhibited in Venice in 1907 titled Signora alla Teletta. The silver candlestick, copper (?) teapot on its stand, and red blossom in the model's hair in your painting also appear in Woman Sitting at a Table (Christie's New York sale,, May 18, 2011, Lot 66), which I would date to the same period. The silver candlestick also appears in The White Shawl (ca. 1904, Terra Foundation for the Arts). The chair in which the model sits in your painting can be seen in a photo of Miller's Paris studio (page 16, Fig. 13 in my book A Bright Oasis: The Paintings of Richard E. Miller). The black dress worn by the model, with its distinctive bodice is identical to the dress worn by one of the women in two other Miller paintings: Le Café (also known as Au Cafe de Nuit and L'Apéritif, Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Coll.) and Café L'Avenue (Cummer Museum, Jacksonville, Florida), both of which I would date 1908-1910. Le Café was reproduced in the June, 1911 (vol. 43) issue of International Studio. Miller had an inventory of props - such as teapots, candlesticks, bowls, figurines, chairs, necklaces, etc. - as well as gowns and fabrics that he used repeatedly over the years in his paintings, making slight variations in color and patterns to keep his paintings fresh." Le chandelier en argent apparaît également dans The White Shawl (circa 1904, Terra Foundation for the Arts). A Bright Oasis: The Paintings of Richard E. Miller). Richard Edward [Emil] Miller (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, California, Florida, Missouri/ France, 1875 - 1943) "Figure Appearing for People on the Dock". Oil on Board. Sight Size: 27 X 31 in. Overall Size: 32.5 X 36.5 in. Possibly "The Saint's Departure". Signed lower left. Notes: Mary Louise Kane wrote a letter on the verso containing: "while not given to religious themes in his painting, Miller would have had some impetus to resort to one in 1928. His only child, his daughter Elsbeth (born in 1909) died on January 14 of that year. This was such a severe blow to Miller that he is said to have attempted to contact her after her death via Spiritualist seances. The dolorous line of people lined up on the pier, with hunched backs and heads in hands, certainly conveys deep sadness. The setting of this painting is Provincetown, Massachusetts, Miller's home from 1917 until his death in 1943. The hills in the background are identical to those he painted in Cape Cod, 1932. The sailboat carrying the haloed-figure is the kind of broad-beamed sloop used by Provincetown fisherman. The dry, crusty texture of the painting as well as its gray tonality is characteristic of much of Miller's painting in Provincetown. The only other overtly religious work by Miller that I am aware of is the Reredos (behind the Altar) he painted for the Episcopal Church in Provincetown - The Triumphal Entry - in 1933-35 as a memorial to his daughter. The procession includes many figures with haloes". She also stated, "this painting could be "The Saint's Departure", which Miller exhibited at the 14th Annual Exhibition of the Provincetown Art Association, July 29-September 8, 1928, No. 38 in the catalogue".
