    JOHN MACLAUCHLAN MILNE, RSA (1886-1957) Provencal Farmyard Watercolour, 30 x 39cm Signed lower left John MacLauchlan Milne (1885-1957) was a distinctive figure within early twentieth century Scottish painting, often described as the “Fifth Scottish Colourist” in recognition of his stylistic affinity with Samuel John Peploe, Francis Cadell, John Duncan Fergusson and Leslie Hunter. Despite this association, Milne remains a more individual and often overlooked contributor to the movement, combining a strong sense of colour with a personal and varied subject matter. Born in Buckhaven, Fife, into a family of artists, he was the son of the painter Joseph Milne. He was educated at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh before embarking on a formative period abroad. Notably, he spent time in Canada where he worked as a cowboy, an experience that contributed to his colourful personality, often remarked upon by contemporaries for his distinctive dress and warm, engaging character. Milne settled in Dundee in 1919, a city with which he would become closely associated. During the First World War he served with the Royal Air Force in France and Belgium and was elected President of the Dundee Art Society in absentia, reflecting the esteem in which he was held by his peers. Although based in Scotland, he travelled widely and remained engaged with broader European artistic developments. His work demonstrates a confident handling of colour and light, frequently drawing upon the influences of French painting. Subjects range from Scottish coastal scenes to continental landscapes and still life’s, often unified by a vibrant palette and a sense of immediacy in execution. While his connection to the Scottish Colourists is evident, his work retains a distinctive character, balancing decorative qualities with observational sensitivity. The present group illustrates the breadth of Milne’s output. The Artist’s Cottage (lot 493), High Corrie captures a quiet Scottish setting with intimacy and restraint and is ultimately, a testament to his artistic journey and the impact of his time spent in the region with its almost excessive semi-abstract depiction and bold colours, while Provencal Farmyard (lot 492) reflects his engagement with the light and atmosphere of the south of France using softer brush strokes, a calm warm setting that depicts a blended setting of both tranquillity and vocation. Mixed Vase (lot 494), dated 1925, demonstrates his command of still life, combining rich colour with compositional clarity, Milne’s flower paintings are a testament to his skill as a Colourist, often featuring a variety of colours and intricate arrangements. Milne continued to exhibit throughout the 1920s and 1930s, maintaining strong ties to Scotland while also engaging with continental influences. Today, his work is increasingly recognised for its individuality and its important place within the wider context of Scottish Colourist painting

(SCOTTISH 1885-1957) SOUTH OF FRANCE Signed, oil on board 41cm x 51cm (16in x 20in) Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow With encouragement from supporters in Dundee, Maclauchlan Milne made his first visit to the South of France in 1924, returning to Scotland that September. His dated paintings of St Tropez and Ramatuelle were part of his subsequent studio exhibition in March, and were shown at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1925.In following years his recorded paintings indicate that, on his various trips until 1931, he roamed along the Côte d’Azur from L’Estaque west of Marseilles to Carros and St Paul de Vence near Nice. (SCOTTISH 1885-1957) A DAY AT THE SEASIDE Signed, oil on canvas 25.5cm x 35.5cm (10in x 14in) Sotheby’s Hopetoun House, Scottish and Sporting Prints, Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours, 13 November 1979, lot 384 John Maclauchlan Milne painted various pictures, in oil and in watercolour, of figures on the shore – children playing, workers gathering seaweed, cockle gatherers and other images without figures which focus on wild seas and breaking waves. Generally, these pictures are not titled to specific locations, or the original titles have not survived.This painting is undated, but it is similar to various other works from the period 1908 to 1920. Within this, the form of signature suggests the years 1915 to 1920, accepting that the artist was serving with the Royal Flying Corps in northern France from January 1917 until June 1919.Other dated works of the period 1915 to 1916 include A Fifeshire Landscape (shown at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1915, no. 347), A Fifeshire Moor (shown at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1915, no. 66), Golden Fringe of Fife of 1916 and Boarhills, near St Andrews, also of 1916. Therefore the tentative conclusion is that the present work and those other related pictures of figures on the shore, were from locations on the coast of Fife. Reid & Lefèvre Ltd in Glasgow in September to October of that year was reviewed by The Glasgow Herald on 28 September 1927, which explained: ‘Mr Milne recently spent a considerable period in the south of France, and the majority of the works he has on view are the fruits of his visit to the environs of St Tropez..’The press report names nine of the 39 paintings, comprising 24 oils and 15 watercolour sketches. This painting presents a busy market scene, mixing sunshine and shadow. Other related paintings include  L’Epicerie, 1929 and A French Market, whilst others have titles including St Tropez in 1926 and Cassis from 1924. It was a theme to which he returned many times. This painting is dated 1931, which was a year of success and change for the artist. In March he had a solo exhibition at Percy Moore Turner’s Independent Gallery in London. One of his works, Fleurs of 1930, was acquired by the French State for the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. However the support that he had enjoyed from collectors in Dundee, which had underwritten his trips to France, was ending. Although the present painting is undated, another related work is dated 1927 and this fits with the artist's visits to the area from 1924 to about 1931. Maclauchlane Milne had a solo exhibition with art dealers Reid & Lefèvre in Glasgow in March 1929. A press report in the Glasgow Bulletin singled out a work titled Street in St Tropez as an example of the artist's ‘liveliness of spirit’. The backboard of the present work has the mark of the artist suppliers Blanchet of 36 Rue Bonaparte, Paris. John Maclauchlan Milne made many trips to the south of France in the 1920s, beginning in 1924. Some of his picture titles show that he roamed from L’Estaque, near Marseille in the west, to St Paul-de-Vence, near Nice in the east. A View in the South of France relates to some of his various, dated paintings from Cassis and St Tropez in 1924.Maclauchlan Milne returned to Dundee from military service with the Royal Air Force in June 1919. He returned then removed to France, and his Paris paintings date from 1920 to 1922, along with others from Lavardin in the Loire Valley. He was painting in Scotland in 1923, before returning to France again in 1924, to the Côte d’Azur.In September 1924 he passed through Paris and was quoted by Arthur Moss in his ‘Over The River’ column in The Paris Times on the 12th of that month: ‘There is a revolution going on in Bonnie Scotland. It’s particularly violent in Dundee and in Edinburgh…This is an artistic revolution. So says the painter Maclauchlan Milne…Mac divides his time between Montparnasse and the city that marmalade made famous. This painting probably dates from the south of France in the mid to late 1920s, when John Maclauchlan Milne was travelling to the Côte d’Azur, returning to Dundee to work up his sketches for exhibitions in his studio in the Nethergate, at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute and, from 1925, at the Society of Scottish Artists and elsewhere. His first trip to the south of France was in 1924. He was 38 years old. He had already spent time living and painting in Paris and in the Loire Valley in the early 1920s.Much later in his life, when Tom Honeyman (previously Director of the Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow, and earlier a director of art dealers Reid & Lefèvre) asked Maclauchlan Milne for biographical details for an article for The Scottish Field, Milne remembered his time in Vence, St Paul de Vence and St Tropez ‘…with such men as Segonzac, Kisling and Mendjisky.’ (quoted in M. N. Millar, The Missing Colourist: The Search for John Maclauchlan Milne RSA, privately published 2022, p.135)So who suggested that Maclauchlan Milne should visit Cassis and St Tropez in 1924? Moïse Kisling was in Montparnasse with Pablo Picasso at the Café de la Rotonde in August 1916. (see Billy Kluver, A Day with Picasso, The MIT Press, London, 1997). Maclauchlan Milne painted there in 1921. Kisling had already been painting in St Tropez in 1916 and 1917 and Cassis in 1918, so perhaps they met in Paris in 1920/21 or alternatively Maclauchlan Milne was advised by S. J. Peploe or J. D. Fergusson, who had both been painting on the Côte d’Azur in 1913. (see Millar, op.cit., pp.165-166) Figures in a Sunlit Street is redolent of Maclauchlan Milne’s French pictures from the 1920s.

(SCOTTISH 1885-1957) SUMMER FLOWERS Signed and dated '30, oil on canvas 91cm x 63.5cm (36in x 25in) John Maclauchlan Milne was principally a landscape artist – his legacy comprises pictures from Scotland, Paris, Tuscany and along the Côte d’Azur, however he also produced many still life arrangements of cut flowers, presented in a vase, in various indoor settings. As a Colourist, these flower pictures often present a variety of colours, as in this example. Only some of his known flower pictures are dated, and these range from 1925 to the late 1930s.One of the highpoints of his career was in March 1931. Maclauchlan Milne had a solo exhibition at The Independent Gallery in London where one of his flower paintings was purchased for the French national collection. Fleurs of 1930 remains in the collection of  the Musée National d'Art Moderne at the Pompidou Centre, Paris. (acc.no. JP523P). (SCOTTISH 1886-1957) A SQUARE IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE Signed, oil on board 51cm x 61cm (20in x 24in) In her memoir Belonging (Hogarth Press, London, 1968), Willa Muir remembers learning ‘about a cheap fishing-village our artist friends had praised, in the south of France, an unspoilt village called St Tropez.’ She and her husband Edwin Muir went there in February 1926 ’before it had been transformed into a fashionable resort.’ They found that ‘more and more St Tropez was filling up with artists from every quarter, including some from Scotland.’Maclauchlan Milne first went to St Tropez in 1924 and returned several times in following years. He showed his various Côte d’Azur pictures at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Society of Scottish Artists, in his annual studio exhibitions and elsewhere. The Gardens were established in 1612, cover 55 acres and remain popular to this day. Maclauchlan Milne would also have been drawn to the Musée du Luxembourg there, which was then devoted to the work of living artists.Maurice Millar, the artist’s biographer, has explained that Maclauchlan Milne’s dated pictures of Paris are from 1920, 1921 and 1922, although by no means all were classified in this way. Millar continues: “Maclauchlan Milne had his first solo exhibition at the gallery of Thomas Murray & Sons in Dundee in early April 1921 and this show included several Paris pictures. Sometime in 1921-22 he took over a studio at 132a Nethergate, Dundee. This would be his Scottish base until he left for Arran in 1940. Probably it was his first studio exhibition…[that was]…reported in the press in May 1922 under the heading ‘Paris in Dundee’, which stated: ‘A residence in Paris gave him a greatly broadened technique and a fierce joy in pure colour.’” (Maurice Millar, op.cit.). Indeed, it was said of Maclauchlan Milne’s Paris paintings that they ‘betray a daring in treatment and colouring’ when two were shown at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1922. Adventurous aspects, such as the textile occupying almost a quarter of the image and the assured signature applied – and indeed underlined – across it, show an artist working with confidence. A more classical approach is taken to the arrangement of the figurine and other items upon a reflective table-top. Maclauchlan Milne’s enjoyment of the curves of stems, leaves and petals is clear and is echoed, in part, in the decoration of the jug. As pointed out by the artist’s biographer, Maurice Millar, he began to paint still lifes in about 1925 and is believed to have continued working in the genre until at least 1934. John Maclauchlan Milne was part of this pilgrimage in 1937, 1938 and 1939. His visits were recorded in the Guest Register of the St Columba Hotel. He had achieved his sought-after membership of the Royal Scottish Academy in February 1937 and perhaps felt that it was time for him to follow the example of those earlier artists. His fellow Colourists, Samuel Peploe and Francis Cadell had been frequent visitors to Iona: Cadell since 1912 and Peploe since 1920.Iona is a small island, only 6.5km long. The white sand beaches of the North end (Tràigh Bhan and Tràigh an t-Suidhe) contrast with the stony beach at the South end. Whilst the precise location of this painting is not known, the North end was a favourite location and Milne painted and exhibited several pictures of those white sand beaches. Very few of his Iona pictures are dated.Milne’s studio exhibition in Dundee in October 1937 was reviewed in The Courier. Under the heading ‘Sojourn in Iona’ the reviewer wrote:“He has painted chiefly on the north and west of the little island, brilliantly capturing the glowing colours of sky and wine-dark ocean when the wind blows from the Treshnish Isles and Staffa.”Milne’s Iona paintings began appearing as part of his solo exhibition in Glasgow in September/October 1937 at the Pearson & Westergaard Gallery; at his studio exhibition in October and at the Royal Glasgow Institute that same year; and then at The Empire Exhibition in Glasgow the following year (May 1938).     JOHN MACLAUCHLAN MILNE R.S.A (SCOTTISH 1886-1957) A VILLAGE STREET Signed, watercolour 33cm x 39cm (13in x 15.25in) While the precise location of this work is unconfirmed, it is almost certainly from Kingoodie, where Maclauchlan Milne lived with his first wife, after they married in 1911. Kingoodie lies on the north shore of the River Tay, a few miles west of Dundee. At one time there was a quarry there and the cottages depicted were where the quarry workers lived. The signature of this picture includes the artist’s initial ‘J’, which is typical of his early works. It is likely to date from approximately 1911, which was a tumultuous year for the artist. His father, landscape artist Joseph Milne, died in January and Maclauchlan Milne married six months later. The couple are unlikely to have stayed long in Kingoodie. TROPEZ Signed, oil on canvas (51cm x 61cm (20in x 24in)) Provenance: Acquired from the Artist by Jack Lipsey, Glasgow, in 1956 and thence by descent to the present owner Exhibited: Portland Gallery, London, The Life and Works of John Maclauchlan Milne, 17 June - 9 July 2010 no.35 Wine Boats, St Tropez is a tour de force example of Maclauchlan Milne’s work in the south of France. From 1919 until 1932, the artist spent significant amounts of time in the region, with St Tropez finding particular favour as a place to work. Other leading Scottish artists of the inter-war period were also drawn to the French Mediterranean, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh, James McIntosh Patrick, Anne Redpath and all four artists known as the ‘Scottish Colourists’. Such was its appeal to Maclauchlan Milne, that he spent most of the mid to late 1920s in France, intermittently returning to his base in Dundee to exhibit and sell his works in his native country. His French paintings met with immediate success and a solo exhibition at the leading Glasgow gallery, Reid and Lefevre, in 1928 included several of them, with more shown at its sister gallery in London the following year. Philip Long has explained how Maclauchlan Milne’s French work of the period ‘tends to emphasise the underlying solidity and structure of the Mediterranean villages he commonly portrayed, rather than defining forms by means of brilliant colour contrasts, as did Cadell, or, as was Hunter’s tendency, through a loose network of expressively applied brushstrokes.’ (Philip Long, ‘Introduction’, The Life and Works of John Maclauchlan Milne, London, 2010, pl.9). Wine Boats, St Tropez – and its companions - have maintained their appeal some hundred years after they were created, thanks in this case to its brightly coloured, vividly rendered depiction of a quay-side scene. In a handwritten letter from High Corrie on the isle of Arran, postmarked 16 October 1956, John Maclauchlan Milne wrote to Jack Lipsey following his acquisition of the present painting, stating: 'I am so glad that you like the picture of the wine boats, it has good design and colour.' The artist's biographer, Maurice Millar, has mooted that Wine Boats, St Tropez may be the painting of that title shown in the Exhibition of Pictures by Stewart Carmichael, Alec Grieve and J. Maclauchlan Milne held at the Albert Institute, Dundee, 24 February - 19 March 1933, no.79. He is known to have worked in the North Sannox area of the island that year, not least through the acquisition by Glasgow Corporation of the related painting North Glen Sannox (Glasgow Life acc.no.2213) in 1940. Moreover, the backboard of Cornfield, North Sannox bears a label from the Dundee framers Fraser & Son, suggesting it was framed in the city before the artist moved to Arran in 1940. It may well have been included in Maclauchlan Milne's last studio exhibition in Dundee, held in April of that year, which the press reported comprised mostly of 'scenes in Arran and Iona' (The Courier and Advertiser, 15 April 1940, p.4). Cornfield, North Sannox depicts a location a few miles north of Thirlestane, the boarding house in the hamlet of Corrie, where Maclauchlan Milne stayed in 1939. In a sun-kissed image, the artist realised a favoured scene, when a good harvest has been completed and the countryside looks at its plentiful best. The artists' materials purveyor occupied imposing premises at 38 rue Bonaparte in the French capital between 1905 and 1964. The south of France in the 1920s had plenty of attractions to the artist, not least the warmth of its climate, the quality of its light and the modest cost of living. Maclauchlan Milne spent much of the second-half of the decade in the region and it was here that his palette brightened and his technique grew to an impressive pitch of confidently rendering expressive reality. Balcony, South of France encapsulates the appeal that the area and its lifestyle held for the artist. In an idyllic scene, Maclauchlan Milne draws the eye from the tree in the very foreground on the right, up the inviting steps on the left, to the terrace midway in the composition. Its umbrellas provide shelter from the Mediterranean sunshine and hint at leisurely days spent outdoors, whilst the shuttered villa which rises behind it suggests cool rooms perfect for a mid-day siesta. One can only imagine the longing for foreign travel that paintings such as this must surely have aroused in visitors to exhibitions staged by institutions such as the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and the Royal Glasgow Institute, to which Maclauchlan Milne sent his latest creations. During the 1930s, the artist turned his focus to the Scottish landscape, especially that of the west Highlands. Following a move to the island of Arran in 1940, one can sometimes be forgiven for thinking that his scenes of the island’s villages and beautiful natural surroundings were basking in the sunshine of the south of France, such was its impact on Maclauchlan Milne.
