This painting by Jan Minarik depicts the view of a farmyard. The buildings occupy the entire image area. In the center one can discern the colorful silhouette of a peasant woman standing under a lantern. What makes the composition particularly interesting is the perspective with sharply defined vanishing lines as well as the dynamic contrast of light and shadow. The work is painted in muted earthy colors with rough brushwork. Minarik primarily created views of his hometown Prague and the surrounding area.

The work is signed 'J. Minarik' lower right. It is in very good condition with minor signs of age. The edges are a little rubbed. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 54 x 64 cm, the board measures 40 x 50 cm.

Jan Minarik (1862-1937)
Born in Prague, Jan Minarik initially worked as a porcelain painter. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Prague, where he was a pupil of the painter and printmaker Maxmilian Pirner and from 1889-1896 of the landscape painter Edvard Julius Marak. Fascinated by the forests of his home country, Minarik created numerous landscapes as well as architectural views and still lifes. Today he is primarily known for his cityscapes of Prague. Preferred motifs were abandoned streets and courtyards. Many works by Minarik are now in the Prague City Museum. (tfa)
