KEVERNBronzeSigned with initials, titled, dated 1971 and numbered 7/7 (to underside)38 x 38cm (14¾ x 14¾in.)Provenance:Paisnel Gallery, London (acquired directly from the artist)Acquired from the above in July 1999Denis Mitchell was a painter, sculptor and for much of his life, a market gardener. He and his brother Endell, moved from Wales to St Ives to set up a market garden in 1930. During the Second World War, he served in the Home Guard, and worked as a tin minder, and became friends with Adrian Stokes (1902-1972) and Bernard Leach (1887-1979), who did much to encourage Mitchell to become an artist. Following a recommendation by Leach, Mitchell worked as principal assistant to Barbara Hepworth between 1949 and 1959, learning to master all aspects of working with wood, stone and bronze. Hepworth's influence can be seen in the purity of form and refinement of handling of the chosen medium in Mitchell's work, although adapted to establish his own unique style. He was a founder-member of the Penwith Society of Arts, serving as Chairman for two years from 1955. During the 1960s, he taught at Redruth School of Art and Penzance Grammar School. However, by 1967, he stopped teaching in order to concentrate full-time on his sculptural practice. He established an international reputation with notable exhibitions in London, New York, Chicago, Edinburgh and Cambridge, as well as in the West Country.

    DENIS MITCHELL Endellion.

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

DENIS MITCHELL Endellion. Bronze on marble base, 1971. 324x117 mm; 12¾x4⅝ inches. Edition of 7. Incised with the artist's initials, date, title, and numbered "6" on the underside. Mitchell (1912-1993), born in Middlesex, spent most of his childhood in South Wales and recalled becoming interested in art at a young age. After leaving grammar school at 16 years old, Mitchell eventually found employment with a commercial art studio, though this work was not stable. In 1930, Mitchell and his brother abandoned Swansea to renovate a relative's cottage in St. Ives in Cornwall, where Mitchell became more focused on art making. Mitchell became involved in the thriving art scene in the small seaside town. After his wartime service as a miner, Mitchell was inspired to use his tools to make art. From 1949 to 1959, Mitchell worked as Barbara Hepworth's (1903-1975) primary assistant, a post which further exposed Mitchell to the sculptural process. After leaving Hepworth's studio, Mitchell began creating polished abstract bronze works, which gained him international notoriety. In 1967, Mitchell moved from St. Ives to Newlyn, where he lived and worked for the rest of his long and successful career. Mitchell's sculptures are held in the collections of many public and private international institutions, including the Tate Gallery, London, National Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, National Gallery of Wellington, New Zealand, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
