There were uncles and their little nephew camping at the Walu rockhole. The men used to go hunting and the little boy stayed behind. When the uncles were out of site [sic] the little boy would go steal meat from other people's camps. One day, families came to the uncles to complain about their nephew stealing their food. The little boy said to the uncles he didn't steal and the uncles believed him. The uncles then got mad at the families and then something happened."         Tommy Mitchell was born near Blackstone in WA and lived in Warakurna where he was a senior lawman and major painter in his 70s at the end of his life. His country was Nganturn and Walu. In his canvas paintings, Tommy Mitchell had the ability to evoke a sense of the elemental forces of nature that complimented the physical and ancestral aspects of the landscape. He was raised in the traditional manner living off the land with his family in the harsh environs of the Gibson Desert. He grew to be a ceremonial leader among the Ngaanyatjarra people. Apart from painting, Tommy Mitchell was also renowned for carving ceremonial weapons. This painting depicts sacred men's Tingari sites on his father's country .

        Tommy Mitchell was born in the dessert the Warakurna side of Papulankutja, a small community Central East, WA, work acquired through the from the Warakurna Artists, a local community arts co-op. Ref to painting ‘Wati Tjukurrpa’ “Too many lakes this side of Ngaturn, there are clan pans there. It’s a business place, nothing more can be said” as explained by Mr Mitchell. His country was Ngaturn and Walu. He was a senior lawman and major painter with Warakurna Arts. Mitchell’s paintings depict the Tjkurrpa (dreamings) and stories of his mother’s and father’s country, which he has passed down to his children. Tjukurrpa is the core of desert tradition and expresses the larger spiritual and social dimension of the life of Aboriginal people.
