Sotheby'ssigned lower right " Gyokudo " and sealed --ink and color on silk, mounted as hanging scroll, in " tomobako " inscribed " Gyokudo dai " and sealed 50 x 19 3/4 in. (127 x 50.4 cm.) Kawai Gyokudo was born in Eichi Prefecture. He studied under Mochizuki Gyokusen (1834-1913) and Kono Bairei (1844-1895). He later went to Tokyo to become a student of Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908). He exhibited with the Bunten and was a member of the selection committee for the first show in 1907. He later taught the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and was a member of the Art Committee of the Imperial Household and of the Imperial Art Academy. In 1940 he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit and received the Asahi Culture Prize.
