Modersohn, Otto (1865 Soest - 1943 Rotenburg a.d. Wümme, initially studied at the KA Düsseldorf and later in Karlsruhe. Co-founder of the Worpswede artists' colony from 1889. There he worked with Fritz Mackensen and Heinrich Vogeler, among others. Modersohn specialised in landscape painting, particularly North German moorland landscapes, meadows, birch trees and skies. Initially naturalistic, his style developed into simplified forms, muted colours and a calm, atmospheric mood, partly influenced by Expressionism without fully belonging to it. Married to Paula Modersohn-Becker, she had a decisive influence on his artistic style. Otto Modersohn is considered one of the most important representatives of the Worpswede artists' colony and a pioneer of modern landscape painting in Germany), "Überschwemmte Wümmewiesen/An der Wümme", around 1940, chalk, coloured pencil and charcoal on paper (paper from the magazine Atlantis), 15 x 23 cm, framed under glass, paper browned, fixed to the cardboard at all four corners. We would like to thank the Otto Modersohn Museum in Fischerhude for confirming the authenticity on the basis of high-resolution photographs. Modersohn, Otto (1865 Soest - 1943 Rotenburg a.d. Following his studies at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe, he became a co-founder of the Worpswede artists’ colony in 1889. In engagement with the French Barbizon School, he developed there a distinctive approach to landscape painting, characterized by direct observation of nature and quiet introspection. For Modersohn, the landscape became an expression of inner emotion. Simplified forms, calm pictorial rhythms, and a subdued, harmonious palette lend his works a poetic, contemplative atmosphere. Around 1900, he received decisive inspiration from modern French painting, particularly from Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, as well as through artistic exchange with the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker, whom he married in 1901. As a result, he condensed his pictorial language into clearly structured, increasingly planar compositions, thereby bridging the naturalistic conception of landscape in the nineteenth century with modernism. The painting, created around 1927, belongs to the artist’s mature period. The viewer’s gaze follows a narrow drainage canal whose tranquil surface reflects the dynamic sky above. On the left bank stand simple, thatched boathouses, while to the right a path lined with slender trees recedes into the distance. A small bridge connects the banks and opens the view onto the expansive landscape of the Teufelsmoor. Only upon closer inspection does one discover two figures: a man standing on the bridge and a woman in a red coat among the trees at the right edge of the composition, moving toward one another with slightly inclined postures. The quiet moor landscape belongs to Modersohn’s central pictorial themes. In the balanced composition, the rhythmically arranged rows of trees, and the subdued coloration, nature is distilled into the calm, poetic pictorial world that characterizes his work of the 1920s. Modersohn, Otto (1865 - 1943) Allgäu - Spring in the Little Forest at the Hirschbach, 1939 Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower left 22 x 29.1 in Rental Frame The painting Allgäu-Frühling im Wäldchen am Hirschbach was created during Modersohn's time on the Gailenberg near Hindelang in the Allgäu, where he bought a small farmhouse in 1930, where he lived and worked during the summer months. A brightly lit spring landscape is accompanied by the mountains, which are in the background of the picture. The then 65-year-old found great interest in the scenic tension between the Allgäu mountain landscape and the North German lowlands. It is a recurring motif in his artworks. The authenticity of the work was confirmed by Rainer Noeres and included in the internal catalogue raisonné of the Otto Modersohn Museum, Fischerhude (WV-OM-SW-1939, no. 72.).

45 cm x 70 cm. Rahmen.
