A founding member of the influential Matahati collective, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed is celebrated for his innovative use of collage, found materials and layered symbolism. Since graduating from Universiti Teknologi MARA in 1992, he has established himself as one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary artists, developing a distinctive visual language that blends everyday objects, decorative motifs and cultural references into thought provoking compositions. His early butterfly works earned critical acclaim and marked a significant chapter in his artistic development. Created in 1999, this series of works from the Butterfly Series exemplifies Ahmad Shukri’s fascination with transformation, beauty and impermanence. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed is widely regarded as one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary artists, celebrated for his experimental approach and innovative visual language. Having exhibited extensively both locally and internationally, Shukri resists being confined by any single style, medium, or subject. Instead, his works are distinguished by richly layered compositions that combine oil paint, canvas, paper, aluminium foil, and found materials into dynamic, textured surfaces. As the artist himself has often remarked, the only constant in his practice is change. A former lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shukri eventually left academia to pursue his artistic career full time while continuing to contribute as a part time educator. His early works, for instance, do not possess the expressionist angst of his Matahati peers, but heightened explorations of material and form. The 1990s were heady days for Ahmad Shukri Mohamed with a work using butterfly motifs clinching the Major Prize in the one-off Malaysian Art Open (MAO) in 1994, while Insect Diskette, also with images of the papillon, won the Juror's Choice Award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards finals in 1997 (he won again in the same competition in 1999). Using chloroformed butterflies as an analogy of extinction, Shukri set them about in his Target Series, Bar Code Series and Diskette Series. This work, 939495969798, was highlighted on the cover of the eponymous exhibition, his first solo, at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur, in 1998, and also on Page 29 of the catalogue. Apart from being chloroformed specimens like trophies in hobbies, the butterfly, one of Nature's most colourful creatures, could also end up as only images stored in computer diskettes. Besides the above accolades, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, a founding member of the cult Matahati art collective, hit big time when he won the hugely coveted Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 1997 with his Cabinet Series, and the group went international in the landmark Matahati Ke Mata Dunia exhibition in Los Angeles, the United States in 2009. Apart from art-residencies in Rimbun Dahan (2003) and the Netherland's Exchange (2013), he was also invited for the Sharjah Biennial (2003), the Emaar art symposium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2004), the Asian Biennale (Bangladesh, 2001), the Asian contemporary workshop in Gazipur, Bangladesh (2002) and the Brande Workshop (Denmark, 2002). Late 2019, he had his 9th solo called Monuments at Segaris Art Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

The Serama, developed in Kelantan, lies at the core of Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s Incubator Series, with probable allusions to social engineering. There’s no dichotomy of the elements with what looks like nucleic cells all over. Moral or ethical issues may rankle, but the aesthetics of harmonising and manufactured conflicts in this art piece is another form of tinkering. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed strikes a high profile among members of the art collective Matahati. His accolades include 1st Prize in the one-off Malaysian Art Open (1994), Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) (1997), and the Minor Award in the Mural Satu Malaysia competition (2014). Butterflies are one of the most amazing transformations (metamorphosis) of Nature, emerging with such beauteous colours and flying off from ugly crawly caterpillars. They help by pollinating flowers, but their beauty is also their biggest flaw. They are captured and chloroformed to preserve as cabinets of death. A work from the Butterfly Series won Ahmad Shukri Mohamed the Major Prize in the Malaysian Art Open in 1994, while Insect Diskette, still with images of the papillon, won the Juror’s Choice Award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards finals in 1997. The butterfly image is also used in the Target Series, Bar Code Series, Diskette Series in the 1990s, and later in his Golden Gate Series. This work has the same pedigree as those shown in Shukri’s solo exhibition, 939495969798 at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur, in 1998.

This mixed media on canvas illustrates a curious subject matter, where a curtain of the rainforest is adorned with an â€˜insectopia' of flies and bugs displayed in a symmetrical grid like composition as though collected, chloroformed and mounted on a board.Alternating between the background and fore, we see a cluster of fauna encircled within earthy tones while a construction of colourful unnatural blocks interrupts our perception of an organic world. Layering subtle references to urbanisation, the artist brings our attention to how every bee, every bug, every insect is a vital component in the natural world orders, highlighting man's interference over nature and its precedence. Shukri intends to stress on the impatience over the actions that mankind has been incurring to Mother Nature. Graduated from UiTM (Universiti Teknologi MARA), Ahmad Shukri Mohamed won numerous awards from the prestigious Philip Morris Asean Art Awards and was artist in residence at Rimbun Dahan, Selangor from 2002 to 2003. His works were exhibited at DCA Fine Art, Los Angeles, USA at the MATAHATI KE MATADUNIA â€“ Malaysian Contemporary Art To The World exhibition in 2009. He held his solo at Pace Gallery, Selangor in February 2012. A member of MATAHATI collective, his work has been collected by private collectors and public institutions; among them are Bank Negara Malaysia, Singapore Art Museum and Fukuoka Art Museum.

Ahmad Shukri Mohamed lectured at UiTM but decided to focus on being a full-time artist, while still taking on part- time academic work. He is also the co-founder of Matahati, a collective art group. Preferring to have absolute freedom over his style, materials (he forms his work with aluminium foil, paint, paper, oil, to name a few) and subjects.

A butterfly is perched on an unmoving man's fingertips. He receives a call, presumably a request to release the butterfly. He could release it by just moving his finger, and the butterfly could move by itself without provocation. However, both parties do not interested in changing the status quo. Ahmad Shukri graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1991. He first tasted success when he won the 1st Prize in the one-off Malaysian Art Open at Galeri Petronas in 1994, with his work of chloroformed butterflies. In 1997, he won the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (Bakat Muda Sezaman) competition and the Juror's Choice Award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards finals in the Philippines. He was also in the top 5 Malaysian-level winners in the 1999 Asean Art Awards. He was chosen for the Asean Art Show at the Fukuoka Art Museum in 1994. Shukri took part in the Sharjah Biennale (2003), residencies like Rimbun Dahan (2003), the Echt in Amsterdam, the Netherland (2013), and workshops in Bangladesh and Denmark (2002). His solos include 92939495969798 and Ahmad Shukri (Art Salon, KL, 1998 and 2001), Boy And Girl (Taksu, KL, 2002), Virus (Art Seasons Singapore, 2003), Fitting Room (XOAS, KL, 2005), Golden Gate (Pace Gallery, 2012), Kaki Jual (Nadine Fine Art, 2016), and Made In Malaysia (The Edge Galerie, 2017). The exhibition, Warning: Tapir Crossing, marked the opening of the Patisatu gallery and studio in 2009.

Nature has its own ways of self-destructing, healing and renewal that any human intervention in re-engineering the disparate equations is counter productive. Vast tracts of land, especially verdant acres, have been cleared, for human habitation, a veritable human jungle filled with the daily detritus of sewage and refuse. Areas demarcated as green sanctuaries should be preserved and not degazetted for development for the sheer lucre of a few. Here in Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s Golden Gate #27, the misty-hued forest thick with vegetation of varying greens, and with a sliver of light filtering through somewhat near the middle, is like a paradise portal hiding and protecting the floral and fauna within. Stencilled images of ‘chloroformed’ butterflies, some with torn and tattered wings all over it suggests a fragile ecosystem. This work on wildlife conservation and the environment was shown at the Golden Gate exhibition held at Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in Petaling Jaya.Ahmad Shukri was a founding member of the Matahati art collective, which achieved cult status with the Matahati Ke Mata Dunia exhibition in Los Angeles, the United States, in 2009.
