In 1973, he was the youngest Malaysian artist to be accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery and was granted an incredible second Retrospective from 2012 to 2013 showcasing more than 300 works in various media produced over six decades. He received his art training at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in Berlin (1960 - 1964).

    By its name, Voyage, it spells a travel adventure to somewhere, across time and space, or a stylised boat or dirigible. All these while, we get accustomed to the idea of exotic places like Loyang, Huainan, or Samarkand and Bukhara in Uzbekistan, or somewhere in the intersections of the Silk Route. This is the conventional vistas we get from Abdul Latiff Mohidin's series from 2001 to 2008. Surprise, this 2007 Voyage, the year he staged the eponymous solo at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur, will have you stumped. There are the large dream-like round or oval basketry contraptions, floating if you like, but all seem encased within an enclosed space, an undisguised interior effused with warm khaki-beige colour. The shapes within are like time vapour made visible for the scented once-upon-a-time presence, a shadow of being. Places real or imagined welded into some nebulous oasis in the mind. Voyage sometimes portends a literary personage like Rimbaud or Baudelaire. Still a voyage, to be sure, in different forms, different manifestations, different spirit. Compare this Voyage to the one at the April 2026 Henry Butcher Art Auction, slightly smaller at 91 x 111cm, which fetched a premium of RM 358,400, and you get the drift. In the January 2026 edition, another Voyage (2003) of size 131 x 165cm sold for RM 672,000.     It's literal to assign the year, 1992, to Latiff Mohidin's Gelombang Series, yet given Latiff's peripatetic physical placements, and being a regionally acclaimed poet, the composition, and spirit, can be related more to the meanderings of the mind, of memories, impressions and imagination, of the creative moment. Here, what looks like a sheet music, slanted slightly right in a conventional left-to-right reading of the Latin alphabet, all with its own resonant melody, rhythm and harmony, whatever the artist's habit. Is that a distraction, a detour even? Is it a shred of musicology or literally, an unsteady contraption that is bleak, fragile and lyrical. One can never know, and one suspects too, the artist, left with his own happy conundrum. Latiff Mohidin is a national art treasure, excelling in paint, pen (poetry and translation), print (printmaking), and sculpture. He is adept at three languages - Malay, German and English.     A diagonal top-left to bottom-right approach breaks the static horizontal and vertical and marks a rebellious alignment. There's more depth, certainly movement, and energy. There's growth, harmony and vitality though filled with hidden tensions, even chaos.     This 1997 work is a very, very late off-current Gelombang overlapping Latiff Mohidin's Rimba phase which debut as an exhibition in September 1998. You can glean from the vigorous broad strokes that they are very Gelombang-ish, though the name cannot be taken literally as a water wave but of a wider spectrum of Nature, or surges and excitations of artistic impulses. The 'gelora' emotional trigger translates into the raffish brushes. Latiff's Gelombang series spans from 1985 to 1993, culminating in the exhibition, Pago-Pago To Gelombang: 40 Years Of Latiff Mohidin at the Singapore Art Museum (April 15 - May 8, 1994). Some may puzzle how this 1997 Gelombang fit into the time (series) bracket in this tumble of promiscuous overlaps, but as the artist himself had stated: "The series of my works are not like railway lines stopping at certain (point) and never returns. My series are like rivers which overruns the time lines. There are things like moments of transits. A long transits. Sometimes I go backwards to go forward." "The water flows calling for water... the light flows over, calling for light... the wind blows calling for wind... Each seems to be calling for the other - each according to its rhythmic phase... flowing, interlinking, uniting and dispersing...," Latiff wrote. "Sheer exuberance and vortex, the parched strokes, the raw even primeval chromatic colours..." In sum, the great bilingual essayist and poet Salleh Ben Joned penned (second stanza) in his second Gelombang solo at the Penang State Art Gallery (Nov 15-30, 1990). His first Gelombang was held at the Balai Seni Maybank in January 1988. Amidst the dull labyrinth of this desert, He creates his own oasis of the sacred, Holding on to the clew, gift of Ariadne, He paints his way towards epiphanies.     A sturdy phalanx of hardwood sago palms called rumbia in double tier parallels the architectonic flourish of Indo-Chinese (Angkor Wat in Cambodia) and Thai stupas and pagodas. It is also reminiscent of the architecture of Latiff Mohidin's Minangkabau roots. Sago is a starchy staple in poorer communities, while its leaves and branches are used for roofing and interiors. The rumbia is reminescent of Latiff's childhood in Lenggeng in Negeri Sembilan. This drawing is from Latiff's brilliant Pago-Pago natural and man-made synthesis and phenomenon (1960-1969) that the National Gallery Singapore selflessly promoted on the world stage of the prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2018.     In terms of format with its 40cm vertical constriction, this is an unusual Gelombang, coming from Abdul Latiff Mohidin's first tranches, before 1988, and funneling the view, skewered into an oblong. The length, 40cm, is equivalent to approximately 15.75 inches. There is a sense of sweeping movement, from left to right, with whirlwind force with what look like obdurate trunks slanted slightly left. Sparing seems to be the norm, probably with whatever extant vegetation frittered or blown away. This is no oasis. Nature in its mercurial moods is open to protean climatic changes. Latiff's Gelombang series spans from 1985 to 1993, culminating in the exhibition, Pago-Pago to Gelombang: 40 Years Of Latiff Mohidin at the Singapore Art Museum (April 15 - May 8, 1994).     The landscape is effused with a light clay-coloured veneer, with a spot of blue scratchy strokes on top and faint shadows below. Streaks of red, horizontal and vertical and slanted, spread like a surface virus but are sometimes submerged under other colours. This is not a Monet landscape, real or Impressionist with straight-out interpretations of the reality presented or imagined. Open arid expanse or thorny thickets, marshy dollops or scraggy surfaces under a shifting light, Nature at its best is no unblemished paradise. Latiff Mohidin probably paints the way a bat moves, with sensory perceptions, following the Aristotelian "energy of the mind".     The Voyage series unveiled at Galeri Petronas, KL, in 2007, saw Abdul Latiff Mohidin return to gestural expressions but without specifics in the title, it's unknown if the subject is a place, people or event. The timeline is between 2001 to 2008. It may refer to a literary dalliance or an exotic place in Latiff's travels in the cultural intersections of the Silk Route or even, unlikely, an incident. Unlike Gelombang, the gestures are more ponderous, certainly evoking a sense of contemplation. Unusual are the black dishwashing metal-mesh sponges, disparate settlements perhaps like the dulou fortification. They allude to something earth-bound and static rather than some hovering dirigibles. Viewers perhaps may view it as Telaga Tujuh, such is the beauty of abstract art, leaving it to the discretion of the viewers to interpret the expression and to admire the aesthetics.     Hail the phalanx of sharp tent-like protuberances thrusting into the sky like a cluster of agave leaves offering a sense of salvation to the world, at least regionally in Southeast Asia, a ritual of catharsis. Abdul Latiff Mohidin had stumbled upon, and re-created, an iconic monolith, what he called the "trunk root of tradition". The art, Pago-Pago, is an ecosystem that so defines Southeast Asia, that Singapore chose Latiff Mohidin and Pago-Pago as the embodiment piece, instead of its own Singaporean, in the landmark inaugural exhibition at Paris's famous Centre Pompidou from Feb 28 to May 28, 2018. Whether man-made or intruded with natural growth, it is "living energy" of a nebulous ethos, a great mythos celebrating the civilisation of place and region. His Pago-Pago also lapsed into his poetry, singing praises of the Mekong and the Nusantara, of his ancestral Minangkabau... as far as your mind's eye can see. Frank Sullivan described it as "the shape of boats (especially the prows), agave leaves and other plant forms, birds and their wings, the rhythmic flow of buffalo horns, aspects of the lingam, the lines of eaves and arches, or the patterns and motifs in pagodas or temples...". The word 'Bangkok' is inscribed on the lower right of the work. In Bangkok, Latiff Mohidin established sincere friendship with the great, legendary Thai artist Thawan Duchanee.

    ‘Pago Pago’ is a term coined by Malaysian artist-poet Latiff Mohidin during the late 1950s to describe the cosmopolitan yet regionally rooted spirit with which he made art. Pago-Pago traces a formative period of Latiff’s practice as he journeyed across Europe and Southeast Asia. The historical backdrop of the series started in the early 1960s, when Latiff began his formal art education at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in West Berlin. “Pago-Pago” emerged from the word “pagoden“, which was the source of his inspiration when he encountered a series of Thai and Khmer relics resembling pagoda forms at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, located in Dahlem, in 1961. This piece is strong, dramatic, orderly and precise in terms of brushwork and composition. This series explores the relationship between shapes, figures, colours, balance, perception and the mind of the artist.     Nowhere else as in this Gelombang work precludes the literal vehement gestural swirls of waves. Gelombang can hinge on land forms, but more likely this represents an emotive even organically structured manifestation of something raw and of uncertain quality. Infused with chilli red with outlines of brown, it looks fragmented and splintered with an effusive warmth that is somewhat transformative than anything consuming and stripping. Such combustible palette can be found in Semerak Pesisir (1986), Homage To Rimbaud (2004), Baudelaire (2004), Seascape (2011), Indian Summer (2005) and his mid-Voyage series as in, Dark Voyage (2008-2009). Though the feelings are intensified, there is none of the nihilism of say, Night Of Apocalypse 1 (1992). This is an epigram of mood independent of any fixed object or subject. An echo perhaps, without sound. As he posed: "How do you express something that cannot be touched, held or grasped? How do you clarify feelings and non-concrete things?" (LINE: From Point to Point, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, 1993). This work was featured in his second Gelombang solo at the Penang State Art Gallery (Nov 15-30, 1990), his first being in January 1988. Latiff Mohidin straddles on the creative firmament with paint, print, pen and 3D dimensions. He had a rare tripartite tutelage - DAAD German Academy, Bonn (1960), French Ministry of Culture Scholarship in Paris (Atelier La Courier-Frelaut, 1969) and John D. Rockefeller 3rd Scholarship in New York (Pratt Institute, 1969). He won the SEA Write Award (Bangkok, 1984) and the national Hadiah Sastera an unprecedented nine times!     Who would have thought the wetlands mostly associated with swamps, marshes and bogs could manifest in a tapestry of orangey reds with splurges of yellowy sheens and an overlapping spray of iridescent blue in the left bottom diagonal. What's behind this happy outburst dominated by a fiery bright red. This 2002 aberrant work comes smacked into Latiff's more diaristic Voyage phase of exotic places and poetry allusions spanning between 2001 to 2008 but with the compositions going back even to the ancient past. Or pertinently reminiscent more of his earlier Rimba Series during the second half of the 1990s or his Rawa-Rawa (Marshlands) book of poems in 1992. Whatever, such manifestations of wetlands often regarded as the kidney of the landscape, can only bode well in keeping the biodiversity and mitigating climate change. How underrated that such ecological balance is integral in the long run to human survival. Latiff Mohidin's international profile took a quantum leap with the landmark Pago-Pago (1960-1969) exhibition at the prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris on Feb 28 - May 28, 2018. Regarded as a national treasure for his contributions in paint, sculptures and in letters (poetry), Latiff made history when accorded his second Retrospective (Latiff Mohidin 60 Years) by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2012-2013. His tutelage did not come with the British yellow-brick-road tradition, but in the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Berlin; Atelier La Courier-Frelaut, Paris; and Pratt Institute, New York.     Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. This is one of the aphorisms of the ascetic sage Lao Tzu in his Tao Te Ching. Tao Landscape is less exposed among painter-sculptor-printmaker Latiff Mohidin's series of artworks, as it may be classified under Latiff's Rimba Series. It was probably inspired when working on the Bahasa Malaysia translation of the Tao Te Ching. The raw beauty of the painting inspired by the wu-wei or the spirit of inertia or non-action may mimick a Chinese landscape painting with the aesceticism of Shih Tao.     Abdul Latiff Mohidin produced eight sketches involving the Rumbia (hardwood plant) around 1964 to 1965, with at least one other like this depicting a trinity with two on the sides in the background. (L.I.N.E. Latiff Mohidin: From Point to Point, p.134), emphasising on the "rhythm and architecture"... "Resolve intensifies, work multiplies." In 1964, Latiff was returning home from his Art studies in Germany. The same year, he held a solo exhibition at the Bangkapi Gallery in Bangkok where he unveiled his Pago-Pago works although he may have also done so in a solo show at the Laden Galerie in Berlin. Interestingly, there seems to be a touch of humour with his cactus-like protrusions looking like some kind of humanoid plant with head and limbs.

    When Abdul Latiff Mohidin returned from Germany, he unleashed one of the most defining art at the time and of the region. The Pago-Pago series is a synthesis of forms inspired by ancient monuments in Southeast Asia infused with nature. The genesis of Pago-Pago already started in West Germany. As Latiff is to comment on hindsight, much later: "I realise in the structure of forms, in a number of paintings and sketches I made around 1963 to 1964 in Berlin (far from the tropical scene), there were already hints and foreshadowing of forms resembling the pointed shapes of bamboo clumps, pandanus leaves, fishing boats, shells, hills, even tapering outlines of balconies, mosque-minarets and stupa-pagodas. Already there were the curves of yam leaves, river pebbles, wells ... bivalve shells and domes... and the colours of the land..." It moved Peggy Crawford Singhalaka's comment in her review of Latiff's exhibition in Bangkok in the Bangkok Post (Sept 8, 1965), glossing over the "vitality tempered with serious thought and contemplation of visual experiences..." Abdul Latiff Mohidin casts a giant shadow in the world of art and literature. He was the youngest Malaysian artist to be accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in 1973, and was granted an incredible second Retrospective in 2012 to 2013 showcasing more than 300 works in various media over six decades. He received his art training at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in Berlin (1960-1964). On his return, he made his famous tour of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia. He won Second Prize (Graphic) in the 1968 Salon Malaysia. He advanced his studies in printmaking at the Atelier La Courrier in Paris (French Ministry scholarship, 1969) and the Pratt Institute in New York (John D. Rockefeller III scholarship, 1969). He is also a published poet with books including Sungai Mekong (1971), Kembara Malam (1974), Serpihan Dari Pendalaman (1979), Pesisir Waktu (1981), and Sajak-Sajak Dinihari (1996). He won the Malaysian Literary Awards consecutively from 1972 to 1976 and again in 1984 and 1986, and the coveted SEA Write Award in Bangkok (1984). He was Guest Writer of the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in 1988, a Creative Fellow at Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1977, and a guest artist at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1980. He was also the founder and guiding spirit of the artist's co-operative, Anak Alam (Children of Nature).

    “I’m in my studio every day, but I mainly work in my mind.” Latiff Mohidin’s works bear a distinctively cosmopolitan outlook in terms of the successful development of a modern abstract visual language and a sustained exploration of world art and literature. It is the Pago Pago series that won him critical acclaim as one of Malaysia and Southeast Asia’s most important modern artists. This series brought about primitive and tribal essences into his works, and the artist recalls his travels to Thailand and Indochina as being the key development and inspiration to his work in this series. He meticulously sketched sacred monuments and nature. It is in this series that he fused stupa-like forms and natural plants and rock forms, focusing on the “energy-movement” of structures rather than their simple depiction. Using rapid strokes, Latiff‘s work conveys spontaneity and the subject matter of interlocking geometric and more organic forms would become recurrent in his practice.

    Under the spotlight is a gem by abstract art maestro Abdul Latiff Mohidin from his Samarkhan series. Latiff is known for his art of painting, printmaking and sculptures as well as his poetry and books on aesthetics. Compared to the artist’s other works, the ‘Samarkhan Series’ is more muted and is predominantly painted using earthy tones. Here, Latiff portrays his rendition of the ‘jewel’ of Islamic central Asia. The organic forms are rendered masterfully in an effortlessly balanced composition set in a landscape format. The Samarkhan series emerged from Latiff’s 1990 journey through Central Asia, including visits to Bukhara, Samarkand, and Isfahan. During this period, he produced expressive sketches and drawings that he later developed into complex paintings, interpreting his surroundings and the world through his unique artistic lens.

    "A sketch is not really to catch the floating moment, but the atmosphere. Not only what is there but also what isn't there." ~ Abdul Latiff Mohidin, The Journey to Wetlands and Beyond Latiff has always had a deep connection with nature. This paperwork, done in 1992, is a spontaneous illustration from his Gelombang series. It emulates light brown patches of indeterminate shapes with white outlines in a sea of black fleeting between a negative and positive space. Done in 1992 while he was still working on Gelombang series before it ended in 1994, it was also then that the artist had the initial conceptual impetus of the Rimba series, that he had begun seeing the emergence since 1991. This work captures the sensation and dynamism of movements that are fluid and unceasing as eminent in his Gelombang series, yet a hint of contrasting and heightened tension in his Rimba series is seen. Abdul Latiff Mohidin is a poet, painter, printmaker and sculptor.  He received his education at Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Germany, studied printmaking at Atelier La Courriere in France and Pratt Graphic Centre in New York, USA. He received honours and awards such as the Malaysia's National Literary Prize and the Southeast Asian's Writer's Award in 1984. Hailed as a 'boy wonder' by the local press when he held his first solo at the Kota Raja Malay School in 1951 at the age of ten, he has come a long way to earn himself the distinction of being one of the leading modern Southeast Asian artists, and today he is regarded as a national treasure. From the monumental and arresting Pago-Pago to the dynamic and perpetual Gelombang, Latiff never fail to surprise us with fresh ideas in every new work.     Born in 1941, Latiff started painting at an early age and by 10 he was holding his first exhibition at Kota Raja Malay School in Singapore, and was dubbed in the local press as the “boy wonder”. He is well-known as a poet as well. He was trained in art at Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Germany, Atelier La Courriere in France and Pratt Graphic Centre in America. Among the honours and awards he has received are the Salon Malaysia’s 1968 second prize in Graphic Design and the Malaysian Literary Awards for four years in a row, the National Literary Award in 1984 and 1986 and the Southeast Asian Writers Award in 1984 for writing the tests of time and change, an entity that symbolises growth and a sense of continuity across space and time. ‘Pago Pago’ is a term coined by Malaysian artist-poet Latiff Mohidin during the late 1950s to describe the cosmopolitan yet regionally rooted spirit with which he made art. Pago-Pago traces a formative period of Latiff’s practice as he journeyed across Europe and Southeast Asia. The historical backdrop of the series started in the early 1960s, when Latiff began his formal art education at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in West Berlin. “Pago-Pago” emerged from the word “pagoden“, which was the source of his inspiration when he encountered a series of Thai and Khmer relics resembling pagoda forms at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, located in Dahlem, in 1961.

    Abdul Latiff Mohidin's Mindscape is a fixed dome portal where ephemeral thoughts travel through space and time usually with the markings, whether textural or tonal, espousing a singular theme like psychedelia, chaos or sedation. This is from the second tranche, from 1979 to 1985, where an irregular orange blob takes centrestage, the periphery blotted with squiggles 'floating' in space. At the bottom of the inner dome is infested with reddish dot profusions on a darker blue veneer. This is a mood Mindscape using colours - the base colour is blue - and where slivers of raw, dirty yellow pepper the whole composition. Wrote Tengku Sabri Ibrahim, curator of 60 Years of Latiff Mohidin Retrospective: "Compositions in the Mindscape 2 series largely integrate architectural forms - arches and domes - in which are to be found shapes resembling 'doors'. These compositions are based on a single-point perspective with crossing lines running towards the middle. Painter-printmaker -sculptor-poet Latiff Mohidin made a quantum leap in his career as an artist when his landmark Pago-Pago (1960-1969) was exhibited at the world-class venue, Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2018. A national treasure, Latiff was accorded his second Retrospective (Latiff Mohidin 60 Years) by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2012-2013. Latiff was trained at three great institutions: the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Berlin; the Atelier La Courier-Frelaut, Paris; and Pratt Institute, New York. He was awarded 2nd Prize (Graphic) in the Salon Malaysia in 1968. He is a literary giant, having won the SEA Write Award in Bangkok in 1984 and 1986, the National Literary Award in 1984 and 1986, and the Malaysian Government literary prize from 1972-1976. He was a Creative Fellow at Universiti Sains Malaysia (1977) and a guest writer at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (1988).

    In this work from the Pago-Pago series, we can see a confluence of architectural forms derived from Southeast Asia, and organic elements influenced by the growth patterns of nature. Here, the vertical structure rises with dynamic strength from the ground, concentrating a myriad of shapes such as bamboo, leaves, curling shells, boats and architectural elements into a dense mass. His refreshing visual language captures the unique vibrancy of the landscape and culture of the region. Latiff Mohidin's international profile took a quantum leap with the landmark Pago-Pago (1960-1969) exhibition at the prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris on Feb 28-May 28, 2018. Regarded as a national treasure for his contributions in paint and sculptures and in letters (poetry), Latiff made history when accorded his second Retrospective (Latiff Mohidin 60 Years) by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2012-2013.
