Klaus Moje is considered a pioneer of the modern art glass movement in Australia. He founded the Glass Workshop of the Canberra School of Art, where he taught for many years. The influence of traditional cold working skills coming out of the great Bohemian glass traditions is notable in Moje's finely detailed cutting and perfectly ground surfaces. Large mosaic glass bowl. 1988. Polychrome glass. Form fused from rods and square surfaces, surfaces on top and bottom with a matt finish. Square, centrally troughed shape. 43.5 x 43.5 cm, H. 5 cm. Inscribed on the upper edge: Klaus Moje 10.1988 # 31 (engraved). Klaus Moje (1936-2016) is one of the pioneers in glass art. At the beginning of the 1970s, in search of new ways of expressing himself, he experimented with sections of glass rods and fused them in an electric furnace to form mosaic panels. In the following years he varied and perfected this technique, which was already known from Roman antiquity and was also used in Venice, and created fascinating new types of mosaic bowls, plates and vessels through the masterful combination of color fields and strips. They are often linear patterns with strong colors, which he combines into geometric shapes and explores variations on a composition theme in series of works. Moje always sees his vessels as canvas, which is why his art is also referred to as painting with glass. At the beginning of the 1980s he moved to Australia and became a pioneer of the local studio glass movement. His work is represented in more than 50 major international museums, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum Bellerive in Zurich, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Arts & Design in New York.
