Marie Madeleine Seebold Molinary (American/New Orleans, 1866-1948) "Still Life of Roses" oil on canvas signed upper right. Period gilt frame. 20" x 24", framed 30" x 34" Provenance: Jean Bragg Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: With limited opportunities at the time for women to pursue a career as an artist, Marie Madeleine Seebold began her studies in 1877 with local artists Paul Poincy and George David Coulon. Her father, W. E. Seebold, a prominent art dealer, encouraged his daughter's interest in art and she furthered her studies with William Merritt Chase in New York, at the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Particularly known for her abilities at still lives, the painting "Still Life of Roses", signed with her maiden name, was created prior to her marriage to her mentor and longtime companion, Andres Molinary in 1915. Seebold was an active member of the turn-of-the-century art community and exhibited with the Artist's Association of New Orleans, the Arts and Crafts Club and the Southern Art Union.
