GRAFRATH, 1903 Öl auf Leinwand. 69 x 79 cm. Rechts unten signiert. Verso Aufkleber mit Künstler- und Titelnennung, Datierung, sowie „Eigentum Frau Prof Moll Düsseldorf“. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Blick über einen alten Holzzaun am unteren Bildrand auf einen grünen Hügel, umgeben von zahlreichen hohen Bäumen und Sträuchern in differenzierten Grüntönen und mit ersten, herbstlich verfärbten, gelb-bräunlichen Blättern. Im Hintergrund ragt die Spitze eines Kirchturms in den grauen Himmel. Impressionistisch wirkende Malerei in raschem Pinselduktus. Moll war Schüler von Lovis Corinth (1858–1925), ging 1907 nach Paris und war dort mit Henri Matisse (1869–1954) befreundet. Mitglied des Deutschen Künstlerbundes. In der NS-Ausstellung „Entartete Kunst“ diffamiert. Gründete 1908 gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Marg Moll (1884–1977) und Hans Purrmann (1880–1966) die Akademie Matisse. Insgesamt gut. Beschwingte Komposition in lockerem Pinselduktus. The composition of the painting is characterised by a balanced tension between surface and space. Wird in das in Vorbereitung befindliche Werkverzeichnis von Georg Leistner aufgenommen. - Seine Ausbildung genoß Moll zunächst bei Lovis Corinth in Berlin, bevor er sich 1907 mit seiner Frau, der Künstlerin Marg Moll und Hans Purrmann nach Paris begab. Hier lernte er Matisse kennen, mit dem ihn eine lebenslange Freundschaft verbinden sollte. 1911 kehrte das Paar nach Deutschland zurück. Reisen durch Südeuropa führten zu einer Aufhellung der Palette und mehr Leichtigkeit. - Auf dem vorliegenden Blatt, das eine südfranzösische Landschaft zeigt, ist neben dieser hellen Palette mit leuchtenden Lokalfarben vor allem der lockere Pinselduktus hervorzuheben. Eine überwucherte Gartenmauer grenzt den Vordergrund ab. Dahinter sind weitere Pflanzen und links ein Gebäude zu sehen, dann trifft der Blick tief in der Landschaft auf eine stilisierte Bergkette. Die zwanglose Verknüpfung von Kubismus und Impressionismus wird auf unserem Blatt in besonders schöner Weise ersichtlich.

The painting is included in the forthcoming new catalogue raisonné. The portrait of the "Grüne Dame im roten Sessel" is one of the last paintings of Oskar Moll's oeuvre. Characteristic of his late style is a delicate, cool colouring dominated by a light, powdery blue tone. The contours of the depiction dissolve, the paint is only lightly dabbed; red, green and yellow tones set brilliant accents. There is no sign of Oskar Moll's post-war situation full of hardships and health problems in these late works. Their luminous transparency rather lends the subjects the appearance of fleeting illusions in a summery light atmosphere.

Signed 'Oskar Moll' in greyish green lower right. We would like to thank Gerhard Leistner, Wenzenbach, for kind advice. The painting has been included in the new forthcoming catalogue raisonné. Between 1903 and 1905 Oskar Moll resided at Höhenroth Castle in Wildenroth near Grafrath in the proximity of Fürstenfeldbruck in Upper Bavaria. During these years, a series of impressionistic paintings were created in the terminal moraine landscape of the immediate surroundings. Close-up, Moll reproduced the Amper, a tributary of the Isar river, flowing sluggishly through the meadows and floodplains, attractively reflecting the willows standing on the banks. Moll's close friendship with his artist colleague Fritz Behrendt dates back to this period. Behrendt established himself as a successful artist's paint manufacturer in Grafrath and from then on Moll obtained his paints.

In 1925 Oskar Moll was appointed director of the academy of fine and applied art in Breslau. Moll remained head of this successful art school until it was closed for political reasons in 1932. Within his own artistic development, a change in stylistic expression can be observed during the same period. The artist sought a more meticulous structuring of the pictorial space as well as a clear and constructive two-dimensional composition; presumably through his wife, the sculptor Marg Moll, he found a model for this in the late Cubism of French artists such as Fernand Léger, Louis Marcoussis and Jean Metzinger. The “Komposition mit Fruchtschale” exemplifies this stylistic period in Moll's work. Particularly the space surrounding the picture's central motif is carried out according to a Cubist understanding of form. The fruits themselves are depicted in a more representationally precise manner, and they also stand out as the protagonists of this still life through their colour. RefMod191119
