Joos de Momper d. J. 1564 Antwerpen - 1635, und möglicherweise Sebastian Vrancx, 1573 - 1647, zug. WEITE LANDSCHAFT MIT REITERN, UM 1630 Öl auf Holz. 49 x 39,5 cm. Gerahmt. Provenienz: Deutscher Privatbesitz. Literatur: Abgebildet in Klaus Ertz, Josse de Momper der Jüngere (1564 - 1635). Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Freren, 1986, S. 274, Nr. 310 und S. 494, Kat. 115. (1010211) (12) Joos de Momper the Younger, 1564 Antwerp - 1635 ibid, and possibly Sebastian Vrancx, 1573 - 1647, attributed WIDE LANDSCAPE WITH RIDERS, CIRCA 1630 Oil on panel. 49 x 39.5 cm. Recorded in the RKD image archive with number 0000087081. The composition shows a clear two-part division of the picture composition as well as the colour scheme. Dividing the composition as well as the painting's chromaticity into two is a design principle, which the artist admittedly already drew on in his early work, however resumed and perfected in his late work. The painting, designed in portrait format (unusually for Momper), shows a simple picture composition and finely nuanced chromaticity. Image panel slightly warped. Provenance: Private Collection, Germany. Literature: Illustrated in Klaus Ertz, Josse de Momper der Jüngere (1564 - 1635). Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Freren, 1986 p. 274, no. 310 and p. 494, cat. 115.

LANDSCHAFT MIT STEINERNER BOGENBRÜCKE UND FIGURENSTAFFAGE Öl auf Eichenholz. 44,5 x 96 cm. Provenance: Anon Sale, Bukowskis, Stockholm 2002, where acquired by the present owner. Then with a later panel strip of circa 6 cm added to the top, now removed. Literature: K. Ertz, C. Nitsche - Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere (1568-1625): kritischer Katalog der Gemälde, IV: Jan Brueghel d.Ä. als Mitarbeider, 2010, p 1443, cat. no. 658, with ill. Both Joos de Momper II and Jan Brueghel I are recognised today as among the most important South Netherlandish painters of the 17th century. While de Momper's important contribution to the development of painting lies in the field of landscapes, Jan Brueghel I 's fame is based on his refined multi figured and jewel like pictures on small scale, such as he executed for Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Milan in the 1590's. Each a specialist in their own genre, de Momper and Brueghel time and again and throughout their entire career joined forces to produce landscapes which can well be recognised as among the most successful of the period. In these landscapes, de Mompers fluid and broad painterly style magically connects with the virtuosity of Jan Brueghel's figures lending a human element to the otherwise vast and empty landscape. These landscapes are the climax of the specialisation that took place in Antwerp in the first quarter of the seventeenth century and which created a flourishing of both the arts and the art market. The present painting is an excellent example of the de Momper's and Brueghel cooperation and stylistically belongs to the group of panoramic landscapes on similar medium scale, which date from the first decennium of the 17th century. To this group belong the landscapes in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna; the collection of the Furst of Liechtestein, Vienna and in the Prado (see K. Ertz, Joos de Momper II, 1986, cat.nos. 136, 134 and 135; Ertz and Nitsche - Ertz, op.cit, nos 656, 653 and 654). Characteristic is the staffage of packed horses and travellers and also occurs in the landscapes in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Kopenhagen and in the Bernheimer collection, Schloss Fuschl, Austria (see Ertz, op.cit. 1986, cat.nos 54/5, with ills; Ertz; Nitsche - Ertz, op.cit, cat.nos 615/6, with ills). De Momper and Brueghel's successful cooperation probably spans some thirty years and probably began immediately after Brueghel's return from Italy in 1596. Although de Momper's journey to the south is not recorded, it is generally believed that he too visited Italy in the late 1580s and thus knew the majestic Alpine landscapes that were to make the subjects for his paintings from his own sight and experience. However, despite the obvious realistic tendencies of de Momper's landscapes, his art is still firmly based on the developments such as these took place in the field of landscape during the course of the16th century. These developments accelerated after the invention of the so-called vedute by Pieter Brueghel I, which introduced the vast and panoramic landscape as an independent subject in painting. Starting in the 1590's de Momper's earliest landscapes are still making a somewhat archaic impression with torrents and rocks often narrowing the view. From the first decennium however, de Momper's creates open vistas, in which the tradition of the 16th century so called 'world landscape' is less dominant. The staffage of packed animals symbolising the journey of men through life is the only reminiscent of this pictorial tradition.

FANTASIELANDSCHAFT MIT EINEM WANDERER IN BEGLEITUNG DES SCHUTZENGELS Öl auf Eichenholz. 33,5 x 57,4 cm.
