Peter Monamy Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1681 - d. 1749

(born 12 January 1681 London, England; died 1 February 1749 London, England) British painter. A prominent maritime painter of early 18th century Britain, Monamy originally trained as a house decorator, sign painter and gilder. He apprenticed with the Master of Painter-Stainers Company William Clark in 1696 before becoming a freeman in 1703. Although he was influenced by a variety of artists, his chief influence was the artist Willem van de Velde the younger. Self-taught, Monamy collected and copied many of his drawings and it was van de Velde that likely prompted Monamy to become a maritime painter. He painted actual ships but because his career took place during a rather peaceful period his works do not depict factual maritime battles. In 1726, Monamy was admitted to the Painter-Stainers Guild, maintaining his relationship with the company. In 1736 he was commissioned along with other painters to paint for the Vauxhall Gardens and in 1748 he presented a painting to the Foundling Hospital. Despite the fact that Monamy had a career that spanned over forty years and was relatively well known on London’s art scene, he never achieved great fame.

DER SALUTSCHUSS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 28 x 35 cm. Rahmen mit den Künstler nennender Plakette. In vergoldetem Profilrahmen. (1432222) (13)

PETER MONAMY OIL, SHIPS AT SEA

    Est: $7,000 - $10,000

MONAMY, Peter (Scottish American, 1681 - 1749). Ships at Sea. Oil on panel. 16 1/2” x 21 1/2” panel, 20 1/2” x 25 1/2” framed. Provenance: Property from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. William K. Laughlin; Thence by descent. Peter Monamy was an English marine painter from and active in London. He was born in 1681, the youngest son of a Guernseyman. Monamy became a member of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers guild in London in 1703 following a seven year apprenticeship under the house-painter William Clarke. In 1726, he was elected a Liveryman of the Company of Painter-Stainers, to which he presented a very large painting of the ship Royal Sovereign at anchor, which still remains in their collection. Although his paintings usually depict actual ships, they rarely record specific events as, up until 1739, his career coincided with a long period of peace. From the 1730s until his death, Monamy was at the centre of London's artistic life and was a friend and companion of Hogarth, sometimes collaborating with the celebrated younger artist. He painted at least four large supperbox works for the glamorous Vauxhall Gardens, a resort in London, in the 1740s and was patronised by many of the leading families of the day. A painting depicting similar vessels, Harbor Scene: An English Ship with Sails Loosened Firing a Gun, is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Works by Monamy are in the collections of the National Gallery, Dublin (2), City Art Gallery, Glasgow (1), National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (21), Painter Stainers' Company, London (2), Metropolitan Museum, New York (1) and the National Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (1).

Peter Monamy,  British 1681-1749-  A British two-decker man-o'-war in four positions in a stiff breeze;  oil on canvas, signed and indistinctly dated 'P: Monamy; 17...' (lower left, on the flotsam), 76.3 x 125.7 cm.  Provenance:  Vice Commodore G. Coats, by whom gifted in 1894 to;  The Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club.  Anon. sale, Christie's, London,13 February 1981, lot 129.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The youngest son of a Guernsey man, Monamy was born in London in 1681. Throughout his career he was heavily influenced by the works of Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) and other North European, Dutch and French masters. Monamy was a collector of van de Velde's drawings and these clearly influenced his development as a maritime painter, resulting in numerous commissions from mercantile and naval patrons, including the famous Channel Islands' naval families, the Durrells and the Saumarezs. In 1726, he was elected a Liveryman of the 'Company of Painter-Stainers', to which he presented a very large painting of the 'Royal Sovereign at anchor' which still remains in their collection today. Although his paintings usually depict actual ships, they rarely record specific events as, up until 1739, his career coincided with a long period of peace. From the 1730s until his death, Monamy was at the centre of London's artistic life and was a friend of William Hogarth (1697-1654), sometimes collaborating with the celebrated younger artist. Monamy's eldest daughter, Mary, married the marine painter Francis Swaine (1725-1782) and their son, Monamy Swaine (c.1750-c.1800), following the family tradition, also became a marine artist.

Atribuido a Peter Monamy (Londres, 1681 – 1749) “La Batalla de Rande, Vigo en 1702” y “El Sitio de Barcelona” Pareja de óleos sobre tela. Reentelados.
