RABIN MONDAL (1929-2019) "UNTILTED" SIGNED & DATED 2015 Signed and dated 2015 top left Mixed-Media on Paper Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist and thence by descent Footnotes: Art, for me, is an intimate expression of my innermost self, the only medium I truly understand. Armed with brushes, oils, pencils, and charcoal, I breathe life into emotions on canvas. As I work, I'm transported to another realm, witnessing my canvas come alive. Born in 1932 into a humble government official's family in Kolkata, Rabin Mondal graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from Vidyasagar Art School. His art delves into the grotesque, conveying inner turmoil and human struggles. His unconventional perspective on his surroundings may be attributed to his upbringing in the bustling industrial town of Howrah, near Kolkata. He intimately knew the city across the Ganges River, where poverty and affluence coexisted in stark contrast, sometimes tragically. The industrial tumult of Howrah left an indelible imprint on his art, as did the street battles fought by political parties. His artistic temperament seemed at odds with this hostile environment. A childhood knee injury further isolated the artist, a sense of solitude echoing in his work. Art, he believed, saved him from madness. In 1949, he enrolled at the Vidyasagar College of Art in Kolkata, where a festival featuring French artists opened his eyes to the world of Western art. Mondal was drawn to the folk style of Jamini Roy and Rabindranath Tagore's disquieting art. However, his encounter with French modernism marked a turning point, influencing his own work. In 1955, his works debuted in a group exhibition alongside other Bengal school artists, followed by his first solo exhibition in 1961 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. Mondal's art is primarily figurative, featuring bold brushstrokes and universal themes. Faces on his canvas are enigmatic, exuding strength and defiance. Despite his aversion to pretentiousness, he painted queens and empresses, empathizing with their isolation. He believed art was for communication, not decoration. Art critic Samir Dutta described Mondal's style as a unique signature, reflecting primitive human struggles against urban chaos. Mondal was active in avant-garde artist organizations, serving on the Lalit Kala Akademi from 1979 to 1982, which published a book of his drawings. It took decades for Rabin Mondal to establish himself as one of India's leading modern painters. Sadly, the artist passed away on July 2, 2019, leaving behind a profound artistic legacy.
