Claude Monet Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Landscape painter, Flower painter, b. 1840 - d. 1926

Artist Claude Monet was born in Paris in 1840, and became of the pioneers of the Impressionist movement. He studied art as a child, and after serving in the cavalry in Algeria for two years, he began studying in Paris. Claude Monet's paintings focused on the uses of form and light rather than strict realism, and his painting, Impression, Sunrise, inspired the term Impressionism to describe his style.

Following the death of his wife in 1879, he seriously focused on his work, and as an artist, Claude Monet became more prolific, creating what became known as his series paintings, depicting the same scene under a variety of weather conditions and times of the day. Claude Monet's paintings' worth skyrocketed after his own death in 1926, with his pieces selling for millions of dollars at auction throughout the following decades. Explore epic landscapes and breathtaking seascape prints at Invaluable, and find something that satisfies your love for the outdoors and the water.

Claude Monet, Mer agitée à Pourville, 1882

    Est: €3,000,000 - €4,000,000

Signed and dated 'Claude Monet 82' lower right in black. Outstanding, highly atmospheric work from the prime period of Claude Monet’s paintings of the coast In the early 1880s the coast of Normandy became Claude Monet’s favourite place to work. For the artist, who grew up in Le Havre, this meant a return to his roots. He would prove himself to be an exceptionally gifted painter of seascapes. Monet completely redefined the classic genre of the sea piece, which had already been familiar to him since his youth in Le Havre through Eugène Boudin’s images of the sea. In Monet’s work, the atmospheres of light and nuances of colour found in the sky, water and cliffs amidst the constantly changing weather and seasons are realised in a powerfully direct manner. “La nature ne s’arrête pas” (Nature never stands still) is an oft-cited quotation of the painter, who worked directly before his motif with his open-air painting, exposing himself to the rigours of every sort of weather for the sake of the greatest possible authenticity in his pictures. Looking back in 1927, the journalist François Thiébault-Sisson recounted Monet’s selfless efforts as he tried to paint during a storm on the coast by Étretat: “After precisely informing himself about how high the waves could reach, he set up his easel inside a crack in the steep coast’s cliff at the height required to avoid being overrun by the high water. As a further precaution, he moored his easel with sturdy ropes and fixed his canvas securely to the easel. He then began to paint. The sketch developed quite magnificently as drops of water poured down on it from the sky. At the same time, the storm became stronger. […] Monet continued to work like a maniac, without paying attention to anything. Suddenly a gigantic wave tore him off his folding chair. It washed over him, completely submerged him and threatened to drag him away with it when he, obeying a sudden instinct, let go of his palette and brush and grabbed for the rope holding his easel” (cited in: Claude Monet, exh. cat. Von der Heydt-Museum Wuppertal 2009, p. 21f.). Monet first discovered Normandy’s steep coast as a theme for his art during a visit to his brother Léon in the summer of 1880, when he came to the little resort village of Petites-Dalles and became fascinated with the cliffs there. Encouraged by his patron Paul Durand-Ruel’s positive reaction to his seascapes, Monet would soon return back to the coast, in March 1881 – this time to the fishing village of Fécamp. His images of the coast here, where striking white cliffs drop off vertically into the sea, became particularly famous. The next year, the painter once again set out in search of impressive coastal motifs. He departed for Dieppe in February 1882, hoping for scenery just as inspiring as what he had found in Fécamp. However, Dieppe seemed too urban for him and the coast there lacking in charm. However, he was very fascinated by the tiny nearby fishing village of Pourville, with its spectacular steep coast, and he moved into a hotel directly next to the beach there. The images created here are viewed in a very direct manner: the remarkable natural scenery featuring the hills to the east and west of the village, which break off vertically at the sea, are depicted from different vantage points, with varying weather conditions and water levels (cf. Wildenstein 709-721). It was also during this late winterly stay that Monet created the work offered here, “Mer agitée à Pourville” – the only painting from the series to depict the sea in stormy weather. The viewer’s vantage point is directly at the edge of the water, in the midst of the elements. Above the agitated sea, the view extends far to the east, where the further course of the coast is vaguely visible, with storm clouds gathering in the grey-violet sky above it. The stony beach in the foreground is immersed in dark tones of blue and reddish brown. As a result, the foamy crests glow all the brighter on the turbulent water, which is depicted in numerous tones of blue, turquoise and green. The waves break in light-green volutes and bright white foam; elongated white arcs of foam wash up on to the shore. The striking cliff face in warm earth tones soars up vertically in the background. Only the tiny silhouettes of two ships on the horizon suggest the presence of people; the rest of the scene is a pure and unadulterated natural spectacle. In June of that year, Monet would return to Pourville with his family and create summertime images of the scenery. In addition to his fulfilling stay in Pourville, the spring of 1882 was also of special significance for Monet because the “7ᵐᵉ exposition des artistes indépendants” organised by Durand-Ruel included 35 of Monet’s works – along with those of Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Gauguin, Armand Guillaumin, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Victor Vignon. The exhibition opened on 1 March and met with a thoroughly positive response among critics and the public. Monet’s paintings of the coast from Fécamp received particular praise. “I pause before these wonderful sea pieces, which mark the first time I sense such a powerful illusion of the swelling and the long sighs of the sea, the backward flow of the water as the flood recedes, the greyish-green tint of the deep water and the violet tint of the shallow water above its bed of sand,” writes the critic Ernest Chesneau (cited in: Daniel Wildenstein, Monet oder der Triumph des Impressionismus, Cologne 1996, p. 179). “Mer agitée à Pourville” was presumably purchased directly from the artist by the gallerist Paul Durand-Ruel. He was the most important advocate and supporter of the impressionists, and he enjoyed a right of first refusal for Monet’s work on account of his consistent financial support for the artist. In 1886 the art dealer brought more than 300 impressionist works to the US, where they met with an enthusiastic response; in 1887 Durand-Ruel opened a permanent branch of his gallery in New York’s Fifth Avenue. Presumably, our painting found its way into the collection of the businessman and collector Catholina Lambert (1834-1923) from there. After immigrating to Boston from England as a young man, Lambert had become involved in the silk industry and amassed a large fortune. He presented the extensive collection of art and antiques that he had gathered over the years in his magnificent Belle Vista mansion in Paterson, New Jersey. The decline of the silk industry and a strike by his workers led to the bankruptcy of Lambert’s company in 1913, and he was forced to auction off his collection as a result. At the auction held in New York’s Plaza Hotel in February 1916, this painting was sold as Lot 158 under the title “Marine”. A masterpiece by the greatest French Impressionist

MONET IN ARGENTEUIL The small town of Argenteuil, which lies eleven kilometers west of Paris on the right bank of the Seine and where Claude Monet made this lively painting, is often associated with the beginnings of Impressionism today. At the beginning of the 1870s, the town was a thriving suburb with around 8,000 inhabitants. Known locally as the “agréable petite ville,” it was a popular Sunday refuge from the hectic city for many Parisians. Despite the rapid industrialization that began with the construction of the railway bridge a few years earlier, the town still retained the charm of a postcard idyll. The suburb was particularly popular with those seeking relaxation who indulged in the newly fashionable passion for sailing. Thanks to contacts made by his artist friend Édouard Manet, Monet was able to rent a house for himself and his family in Argenteuil towards the end of 1871. He set up a studio in the spacious glazed extension to his house, which is only a few minutes’ walk from the Seine. “I have met Monet often recently,” Boudin wrote to his art dealer in January 1872. “He has settled in well and seems determined to make a name for himself. I believe he is destined to take one of the leading positions in our school of painting.” (Tucker, 1995, p. 53) “The fertile period of Argenteuil, which was to become the golden age of Impressionist painting,” (Wildenstein, 1996, p. 93) was initiated by Monet’s arrival, and when other painters such as Manet, Renoir, Sisley and Caillebotte followed Monet’s call, the city finally became the true center of the “New Painting”, its radical fault lines challenging the traditional norms of Parisian salons. In the following years - Monet stayed in Argenteuil until 1878 - he quickly developed the innovative vocabulary of Impressionism. He dispensed with conventional techniques of modeling and elaboration of details and created works with the liveliness and energy of sketches. His quick, loose brushstrokes consciously captured the fleeting moments of nature and the rapidly changing light conditions, which he conjured in his atmospheric canvases “en plein air”, using a vibrant color palette. During his time in Argenteuil, Monet found many different subjects, but the river remained his greatest source of inspiration. Between 1872 and 1875 he painted over fifty pictures portraying different areas of the Seine. Although the moods of these works range from calm to lively, they all have one thing in common: they offer him the chance to explore the theme of an orderly, modern suburb in which man and nature merge harmoniously. “Le bassin d’Argenteuil” was completed in the late spring or summer of 1875, just one year after the groundbreaking first Impressionist exhibition, which introduced revolutionary plein air painting to a wide audience for the first time. On this warm day, Monet is walking along the Seine, where he chooses a quiet place to capture the atmosphere of the afternoon. Monet opts for an interesting view downstream from the Argenteuil harbor basin. On the left side you can see the lush green bank of Petit-Gennevilliers and at right a building that houses a boat rental business. A small bridge connects the two banks towards the front of the painting and sailing boats lie still in the harbor basin, their masts towering high. With expertly controlled brushwork, Monet creates a calm though animated landscape, forming a thoroughly wonderful picture through the various colors of his rapid brushstrokes. The yellowish-pink rays of sunlight push through the slightly cloudy sky and are reflected glitteringly in the water, while the area behind the building at right is in shadow, and the green bank is illuminated by the sun: a testament to Monet’s masterful use of light. THE COLLECTOR OSKAR SCHMITZ In addition to the technical features and the importance of this painting for Impressionism, the work also has strong provenance. “Le bassin d’Argenteuil” was sold to the important Dresden collector Oskar Schmitz via the Paris dealer Bernheim-Jeune. "People came to Dresden to see the old gallery and the Schmitz collection on Emser Allee, by far the highest quality collection of French masters in Germany.” (Meier Graefe, Frankfurter Zeitung, 1932). Initially for investment reasons, later out of passion that turned into exceptional connoisseurship, Oskar Schmitz began to build up a significant art collection, beginning in the late 1890s, over a period of about 20 years. The focus was French art from the second half of the 19th century. Starting with Boudin, Courbet and Delacroix, through Monet, Renoir and Sisley, to van Gogh, Cézanne and Gauguin, his collection brings together all the great names of this era. He later expanded his collection to include German artists, Liebermann playing an important role among them. The collection, which comprises 96 works of art, was displayed in his own villa and could be viewed by the public. Much was written about the collection during the patron’s lifetime, and it is considered to be of particularly high quality both nationally and internationally. “No tentative attempts were made, there was no experimentation, and there is no revolutionary spirit. Rather, the collection is dominated by a lively conservative attitude. In other words, it has endeavored to bring together what has lasting validity.” (Scheffler, 1921, p. 190) Due to tax harassment, Schmitz left Germany in 1931 and moved to Switzerland with his collection. He loaned a large number of the works, especially the important paintings by the French masters, to the Kunsthaus Zurich. “Le bassin d’Argenteuil” is one of five works by Claude Monet that Schmitz bought for his collection. The work was exhibited in the Kunsthaus in 1932 together with other works from Schmitz. When the collector died unexpectedly in 1933, all the works were sent by his heirs to the Kunstmuseum Basel, where the collection remained until around 1936. Wildenstein then took over 62 works and organized a collection auction. In this context, the present painting was sold to a private collection in England. * The full tax is charged on this item marked * in the auction catalogue, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum of the bid price plus the surcharge for those items.
