UK Jonathan Monk was born in 1969, a pivotal year in the formulation of conceptual art principles. Jonathan Monk's art has two main sources: his family history and an art history that fascinates him, namely minimal and conceptual art, of which he reactivates certain forms. However, beyond mere citation, it is primarily the conceptual spirit that he evokes in his works. With a gesture that leans more towards parody than mere imitation, Jonathan Monk questions our relationship with the originality of the artwork and the aura of the artist stemming from modernity. His protean practice thus does not adhere to any specific personal style. In "Lines," he parodies a work by John Baldessari: I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art from 1971. "Appropriation is something I have used and worked with in my art since I started art school in 1987. I still think that art is about ideas, and surely the idea of an original and a copy of an original are two very different things."
