During WWII he was commissioned to create a series of works from an aerial perspective by the WAAC, as he had taken flying lessons before the war. These are considered some of the most important works made during this period by British artists.

Note: Monnington was awarded a three-year scholarship to the British School at Rome from the Slade in 1922, where he would meet his future wife, the artist Winifred Knights. These are considered some of the most important works made during this period by British artists. The painting 'Southern England, 1944' for which the present work is a study is now in the collection of the Imperial War Museum.

These are considered some of the most important works made during this period by British artists and a number of these works are now in public collections, including 'Fighter Affiliation: Halifax and Hurricane Aircraft Co-Operating in Action' (Imperial War Museum), which has a very similar composition to the present study.

Exhibited: The Fine Art Society , 148 New Bond Street, London, W1, Sir Thomas Monnington Exhibition, No.88 Other Notes: Sir Walter Thomas Monnington (2 October 1902 - 7 January 1976) was an English. From 1918 to 1923, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and then became the the Royal Academy's 's Rome Scholar for the next three years. Between 1931 and 1939, Monnington taught drawing in the Royal Academy Schools. Monnington married the artist and fellow Slade student and Rome Scholar, Winifred Knights, in April 1924. He was appointed President of the Royal Academy in 1966, being knighted in 1967. John Monnington, the artist's son, recalls that, as the summer light began to dwindle, his father would wander out with his artist's materials and paint a rapid impression of the surrounding landscape. Sometimes these served as studies for fuller compositions, worked up in the studio.
