By Mario Montelatici, Florence, Circa 1920 The lower left corner signed Montelatici, within an ebonised and parcel giltwood frame Overall: 41 in. x 321/2 in. (104.1 cm. x 82.5 cm.) NOTES Mario Montelatici, son of Giovanni, began making Pietre dure mosaics at the age of nine, completing his last work just four days short of his death in 1974 at the age of 90. Drawing inspiration for his compositions from the paintings of the Tuscan Macchiaiolo School and Southern Italian artists, his production encompassed a wide variety of themes, with particular emphasis on scenes of domesticity and rural life. The present lot is typical of his work, both in its superlative technique, and its genre subject. The chosen subject here is after a painting by Stefano Bruzzi (d.1911), which won a price in the Parma Exhibition of 1888. Another example of this panel, commissioned by Marjorie Merriweather Post for Mar-a-Lago, is part of the the Gilbert collection (Cf. A. Massinelli, The Gilbert Collection, Hardstones, London 2000, p.175). A third example sold in these rooms 7 March 1996 ($57,500).

Circa 1900 The rectangular plaque depicting a child and grandmother in a kitchen, within a conforming ebonised frame Overall: 151/4 in. x 123/4 in. (38.7 cm. x 32.3 cm.) NOTES The ancient art of pietre dure is a technique where illusionist pictorial mosaics are made of cut and polished semi-precious hardstones. The stones are cut with great precision into thin sheets, shaped, then fitted together with almost invisible join lines. Natural markings in the stone are employed to achieve effects of perspective and pattern. Pietre dure as an art form was perfected in Florence during the sixteenth century, where it flourished for many years before falling out of fashion in the mid-nineteenth century. Among the last masters of this art form in Florence were members of the Montelatici family. Their patriarch, Giovanni (d. 1930), is often credited with revitalising the skill of 'painting' in pietre dure at the end of the 19th century. In 1898, Montelatici went into business with Galileo Chini (d. 1857), founding 'Arte del Mosaico' later called Societ… Civile-Arte del Mosaico. The two men exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, winning a gold medal for their large table inlaid with a scene of the Annunciation. Following the success in Paris, Montelatici established a large workshop on the Via Arnolfo, known as La Musiva (see overleaf photo) appointing Chini as its artistic director. Marketing to foreign buyers, the business flourished during the early decades of the 20th century, when Montelatici was joined by his two sons, Mario and Alfonso.

(87 cm.) wide NOTES The art of Pietre Dure is a mosaic technique perfected in Florence at the end of the 16th Century and still practised there. It employs hard, rare and semiprecious stones cut with great precision into thin sheets, shaped then fitted together with almost invisible join lines. Natural markings in the stone are used to achieve effects of chiaroscuro, perspective and pattern. This technique originated in the opus sectile of the ancient world. From the 17th century onwards, craftsmen of the Grand Ducal workshops in Florence have tried to make their work look as much like brush painting as possible. According to Antonio Zobi (A. Zobi, Notizie storische sull'origine e progressi dei lavori di commesso in pietre dure nell'I. e R. Stabilimento di Firenze, Stamperia Granducale, Florence, 1853), 'The time at which real painting began to be imitated in Florence with natural coloured stones inlaid in mosaic to portray objects as if they had been painted with a paint brush' is discussed in a document dated 1597 and relating to a portrait of Cosimo da Medici by the painter Cresti, painting which was given to a stoneworker, Francesco Ferrucci, to be copied into a mosaic picture. Pietre dure enjoyed great popularity through the centuries until the first quarter of the 19th century, where it went out of fashion until circa 1880. The revival of interest for pietre dure is due to the skilful mosaicist, Giovanni Montelatici, who's works were selling successfully to foreign buyers. His production covered just about every subject, favouring sentimental domestic scenes with glimpses of rural life. In the 1880's the pictorial potential of inlaid stones underwent a rejuvenation in the various Florentine workshops. Inspired mainly by the skills of Giovanni Montelatici and combined with the artistic direction of Galileo Chini, the workhop gained international renoun with a piece entitled the 'Annunciation', inlaid into a table, winning a gold medallion at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1900. Montelatici established the La Muciva workshop, which continues to today, specialising in nostaligic domestic scenes with glimpses of rural life.
