            ROBERTO MONTENEGRO (1885-1968) WEST COAST ROUTE / THE VALLEY OF MEXICO AND SURROUNDINGS. Circa 1935. 22 1/4x16 1/2 inches, 56 1/2x42 cm. Condition A-: unobtrusive staple holes along left edge; minor restoration along vertical fold at right edge of image. Montenegro was an illustrator, painter and muralist. This map comes from a 1935 brochure entitled "Mexico," published by the Southern Pacific Railway, in which it states that the original paintings for these images hung in Southern Pacific's ticket office in Mexico City, and that they "illustrate three of the states served by the Southern Pacific Railroad of Mexico-Nayarit, Sonora and Sinaloa." The third mural is not present here as it appeared on a different page of the original brochure.

Roberto Montenegro fue un viajero inalcanzable, visitó gran parte de la República Mexicana, y seguramente, aquellos paseos fueron de gran inspiración para la realización de ciertas pinturas, en especial las de temas indígenas. Esta modalidad artística, junto con el género del retrato, fue en los años 40 lo más producido, siendo un periodo de gran calidad artística merecedor de muchos halagos. En su momento, colaboró con algunos dibujos a tinta en la "Revista de México", la primera revista que canalizaba las inquietudes literarias del grupo modernista. Para esta benemérita publicación, además de hacer dibujos, diseñó vitrales y escenografías para teatro por encargo, los cuales tenían en su mayoría temas mitológicos, los cuales conoció durante sus años en Europa recorriendo iglesias y museos. Montenegro fue un amante de las culturas y un sobresaliente difusor del arte, ideales que lo llevaron a ser director del Museo de Artes Populares de Bellas Artes en 1934 y acreedor al Premio Nacional de Artes en 1967.
